| Plot: | Based on the short Stephen King horror story of the same name, 1408 is about supernatural writer Mike Enslin, an author of two successful books on supernatural phenomena. As research for his latest book, Enslin is determined to check out the notorious room 1408 in a New York City hotel by personally staying as a guest in the fabled room. He believes that 1408 is just a myth perpetuated by stories and rumors that Enslin has collected for his past works. However, hotel manager Mr. Olin has strong objections to Enslin's stay and only warns him of possible danger to come. Enslin is determined to go anyway. But what Mike Enslin is about to experience is no myth, as 1408 truly is a room where the guests don't check out by noon. |

Continuity: SPOILER: The clock on the nightstand repeatedly shows "60:00" before the shock of the clock setting itself to 60:00 actually happens. Continuity: During the scene where Mike unplugs the clock radio from the outlet, the liquor bottle that he was given disappears from the table for a few shots, then eventually returns. Continuity: SPOILER: After Mike has lit the room on fire, the sprinklers come on. Right before he throws the ash tray out the window, his hair goes from messy to slicked back to messy again. Continuity: SPOILER: In the scene where Mike Enslin is lying on the floor in the cold wrapped in the comforter, you can see the bottle of liquor very close to his head. In the next scene when he hears Lily Enslin on his laptop and gets up to try to talk to her, the bottle is much further away. Continuity: When Lily Enslin gets into the cab, the medallion number changes from the outside shot of her entering the vehicle, to when she is shown on the inside. Continuity: The amount of blood on the door from Mike's left hand changes between shots. Continuity: SPOILER: When Mike Enslin sees his daughter in the room for the last time, when she's crying and hugging him, the streak of blood coming down from his right ear changes repeatedly between shots. Continuity: SPOILER: When Mike Enslin sees his daughter in the room for the last time, when she's crying and hugging him, her arms go from being on his shoulders to under his arms back and forth several times. Continuity: After being in the heating ducts, when Mike falls out of the ceiling grate he is still soaking wet but when he stands up, immediately after, he is almost dry. Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: When Mike Enslin is holding his "dead" daughter and they move to a close up on her face, you can see her eyes twitch. Continuity: Before and after the "Blue Light Scan" scene, there is a chocolate on the pillow. During the scan, there is no chocolate. Revealing mistakes: When Mike contacts his wife using his laptop, it is clear that he's using Windows XP (blue taskbar with the green Start button), however when the sprinklers go off, the well-known Blue Screen Of Death is of the Windows 98 type: 'Windows' in white on grey background, the rest of the screen being blue, and the error message centered on the screen. The XP BSOD type is simply a little darker blue with white text aligned to the left. Continuity: The hunting picture over the bed shows the horse reared up a couple of scenes before Mike sees the changes in all the paintings. FAIR: While Mike Enslin is lying on the floor, his hand goes in and out of the bed comforter repeatedly. However, as this happens with each change of shot and is a very obvious inconsistency, it's almost certainly deliberate and done for thematic effect. Especially as, moments later, he keeps changing between lying down and being propped up in between shots, apparently without moving. FAIR: When Mike Enslin is on the ledge outside, the size of the ledge changes. When there is a shot of just his feet, he appears to only be able to fit half of his foot on the ledge at most, however when there are long shots which include Enslin's feet, they are fully on the ledge and are given about an inch of space. However, as the movie's main theme is based around reality and Mike's (and therefore our) perception of it, this may well be deliberate - the ledge really is wide enough for his feet but to his eyes it's far too narrow, thus heightening his fear. Continuity: Right after Mike's hand is crushed by the window, the window is closed. Right after the phone rings, and he tries to leave the room (right before the key breaks) the window is open in the background. Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: Towards the end where Mike is rescued by the firefighters, one of the firefighters' number on his helmet is backwards, indicating that the negative was "flipped". FAIR: If no electronic gadgets can work in the room how does Mike's laptop work? The room is meant to mess with Enslin's mind, so it would be guessed that letting him use these items are for mere amusement of the room. Continuity: When Mike drops the phone down, the receiver is placed in front of the phone, however when he comes back to it again, the cord wire is now wrapped around the telephone and the receiver is behind the phone. Revealing mistakes: When Mike sees him hang himself with bed sheets in the mirror, it's very obvious that the person (a stunt double), is wearing a harness, as the the sheets are centered several inches behind his neck even when he bounces and comes to a stop. It's also apparent that a bungee was used since the person in the mirror bounces back up about 2 feet. Continuity: When Mike see him hang himself in the mirror, the watch is on the right hand of his alter-self (the stunt double), whereas Mike wears his watch on his left hand throughout the movie. This was not simply the result of seeing his image reversed in the mirror, his alter-self is actually perpendicular to him when he witnesses the hanging in the mirror. SYNC: When giving the "Skull Rating" of the first hotel he stays at, he initially gives it "six skulls". He then says "screw 'em, five skulls", but his lips say "fuck 'em, five skulls". PLOT: If the room receives a "light turn" once every month, why are there bloodstains showing up on the sheets under the UV light? Continuity: While Mike is reviewing the room for the first time, he puts down the bottle of cognac on the bedside table, opened. When the radio starts and he looks back from the window, the cork has magically reappeared. Continuity: After Mike discovers the turned-down bed (and the neat toilet roll in the bathroom), he switches off the radio. The cognac is perched right on the edge of the table. When he tries figuring out where the maid might be, the cognac has suddenly moved back. Continuity: When Mike Enslin enters 1408, he flicks on the first two light switches nearest to him. The camera cuts away and when it cuts back, only the middle switch is flicked down. Continuity: When Mike is walking into the lobby, the overview shot shows the woman with the baby buggy and an Asian lady sitting next to her. As the shot comes to ground level, you see Mike walking past the lady with the baby buggy, but the Asian woman is not there. Revealing mistakes: Mike flips through the Bible in room 1408 and tosses it aside. As it lands on the nightstand, the words "Holy Bible" are seen in reverse. GEOG: The Dolphin Hotel is supposed to be at 2254 Lexington Avenue. Later on in the movie it is mentioned to be at the intersection with 45th Street. 2254 Lex Ave, however, is near the intersection with 84th street. Continuity: The level of cognac in the bottle randomly changes during the movie. Continuity: When the sprinklers turn on and destroy Mike's laptop, he becomes frustrated and closes the screen completely. As he moves toward the heating duct grate, the laptop is shown to be partially open, and it stays in this configuration until Mike talks to Lily when the room is frosted. Fact errors: The Japanese don't share the primarily Western superstition regarding the number 13. In Japan, many buildings skip the 7th floor, not the 13th. This is largely because the Japanese word for "seven" is a homonym for the Japanese word for "death". Continuity: While driving from the first hotel, there is an outer shot of the jeep showing a small, 2 lane road, with trees right next to it. In the next shot, there is an additional lane added to the right side of the road, a car and a truck appear from behind, and now the trees are a lot further from the road it's self. |

Mike Enslin: [Olin gives Enslin the room key] Most hotels have switched to magnetics. An actual key. That's a nice touch, it's antiquey. Gerald Olin: We have magnetic cards also, but electronics don't seem to work in 1408. Hope you don't have a pacemaker. Mike Enslin: [into his tape recorder] General manager claims that the phantom in room interferes... Gerald Olin: I have *never* used the word "phantom." Mike Enslin: Oh, I'm sorry. Uh, spirit? Specter? Gerald Olin: No, you misunderstand. Whatever's in 1408 is nothing like that. Mike Enslin: Then what is it? Gerald Olin: It's an evil fucking room. Gerald Olin: The first victim, Mr. Kevin O' Malley, sewing machine salesman, checked into the hotel the first week it opened, October, 1912. Mike Enslin: Cut his own throat, right? Gerald Olin: Well that's not the horrific part. Afterwards, in a fit of insanity, he tried to stitch himself back together using an old sewing needle before he bled to death. [leans over Mike] Mike Enslin: Easy, man. Mike Enslin: Stay scared. Gerald Olin: Well done Mr. Enslin, well done. [repeated line] Mike Enslin: All right. You win. You win. Katie: Mommy, do you know where I'm going? Mike Enslin: Hey... you're not going anywhere. You're staying right here with us. Okay? Katie: Daddy... everybody dies. Lily Enslin: When they're older. Mike Enslin: Much, much older than you. Lily Enslin: And for the people who go, its beautiful. All their friends are there... Katie: Is God there Daddy? Mike Enslin: Yes. Katie: Do you really believe that Daddy? [repeated line in flashbacks] Mike Enslin: I'm going out to buy some cigarettes. Room 1408: Even if you leave this room, you can never leave this room! Mike Enslin: Look man, just give me the key. Gerald Olin: Mr. Enslin, you... Mike Enslin: Just give me the key! Listen, I stayed... at the Bixby House. I brushed my goddamn teeth right next to the tub where Sir David Smith drowned his whole family, and I stopped being afraid of vampires when I was 12. Do you know why I can stay in your spooky old room, Mr. Olin? Because I know that ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties... don't exist. And even if they did, there's no God to protect us from them, now is there? Gerald Olin: So I can't talk you out of this? Mike Enslin: I think we've reached an understanding. Mike Enslin: They say you can't die in your dreams... is that true? Katie: Are there people where I'm going? Mike Enslin: Hey... you're not going anywhere, kiddo. You're going to stay right here with us. Katie: Daddy... everyone dies. Lily Enslin: When they're old. Mike Enslin: When they're much older. Lily Enslin: Okay? And then they go to a better place. It's beautiful there, all your friends will be there. Katie: Is God there? Mike Enslin: Yes. Katie: Do you really believe that Daddy? Father: [to Mike] As I was, you are. As I am, you will be. Mike Enslin: [yelling at the top of his voice] We didn't do enough! Lily Enslin: [crying] Oh god! What are you talking about? We did everything we could have done! Mike Enslin: [still yelling] We should have helped her fight! Not filled her head up with bullshit stories of heaven, and clouds and nirvana! [flips over coffee table] Lily Enslin: [crying] She liked those stories! Mike Enslin: [no longer yelling] I need to get some cigarettes... Mike Enslin: Lily, did you call the police? Lily Enslin: Yeah. They're in room 1408. The room's empty. Mike Enslin: The room's gotta be filthy. I mean, the sheets haven't been changed in... what, eleven years? Gerald Olin: No no no. We're very professional here. 1408 gets a light turn once a month. I supervise, the maids work in pairs. We treat the room as if it's a chamber filled with poison gas. We only stay 10 minutes and I insist the door remain open. But still... A few years ago a young maid from El Salvador found herself locked in the bathroom. She was only there for a few moments, but when we pulled her out she was... Mike Enslin: [sarcastically] She was dead? Gerald Olin: No. Blind. She had taken a pair of scissors and gouged her eyes out. She was laughing hysterically. Mike Enslin: Let's "Encyclopedia Brown" this bitch. Mike Enslin: Why don't you just kill me? Room 1408: Because all guests of this hotel enjoy free will, Mr. Enslin. Mike Enslin: [after escaping from the ventilation shaft and falling back into 1408] Ah, its good to be back. Mike Enslin: [yelling] I want... my *drink*! Gerald Olin: [pats documents regarding 1408's victims] I will let you have this, give you access to my office, you can take notes and put it all in your book. My only condition... is that you do not stay in that room. Mike Enslin: You'll let me look at all that stuff? [considering Olin's offer] Gerald Olin: Hmm. Mike Enslin: I never did get that drink. [Olin pours a glass of the $800 whiskey, handing it to Enslin. Enslin takes a sip] Mike Enslin: Ooh, that is good. Gerald Olin: [smiling] Here, keep it. Compliments of the house. [hands bottle to Enslin] Mike Enslin: [after dropping the bottle into his bag and taking another sip] I'm still staying. Gerald Olin: [yelling] Dammit to hell! Gerald Olin: You do drink don't you? Mike Enslin: Of course. I just said I was a writer. Mike Enslin: [staring at the endless door] Open it. Mike Enslin: [after the toilet paper has been turned down, and the chocolates appear] Finally! Something to for me to write about! A ghost that offers turn down service! Gerald Olin: The causes of death in 1408 range from heart attack, stroke, drowning. Mike Enslin: Drowning? Gerald Olin: Yes, one Mr. Grady Miller drowned in his chicken soup. Mike Enslin: That's hard to do, h - how did he do that? Gerald Olin: How indeed. [examining the mini-bar in room 1408] Mike Enslin: Eight dollars for Beer Nuts? This room *is* evil! Mike Enslin: [sobbing] No... no, you can't take her twice... [the problem about Mike staying in 1408] Gerald Olin: Look, I'm not telling you not to stay in that room for your own good or for the profit of the hotel. Frankly, selfishly, I just don't want to clean up the mess. Room 1408: Five. This is five. Ignore the sirens. Even if you leave this room, you can never leave this room. Room 1408: [Voice changes and handset begins to melt] Eight. This is eight. We have killed your friends. Every friend is now dead. Room 1408: You can choose to repeat this hour over and over again, or you can take advantage of our express checkout system. [Mike looks into the other room and sees a hanging noose] Mike Enslin: He gave me booze! Did he take a sip? I can't remember. Or maybe it was the chocolate! Don't take candy from strangers! Mike Enslin: [describing the room] There's a sofa, a writing desk, faux antique armoire, floral wallpaper. Carpet's unremarkable except for a stain beneath a thrift-store painting of a schooner lost at sea. The work is done in the predictably dull fashion of Currier and Ives. The second painting is of an old woman reading bedtime stories - a Whistler knockoff - to a group of deranged children while another Madonna and child watch from the background. It does have the vague air of menace. The third and final, painfully dull painting, the ever popular "The Hunt". Horses, hounds and constipated British lords. Some smartass spoke about the banality of evil. If that's true, then we've in the 7th circle of hell. [turns off tape recorder and pauses, then turns it back on] Mike Enslin: It does have its charms. Mike Enslin: [talk into tape recorder] Hotels are a naturally creepy place... Just think, how many people have slept in that bed before you? How many of them were sick? How many... died? Gerald Olin: Hotels are all about presentation and fertile creature comforts. Book Store Cashier: Where is the best place where I can see ghosts? Mike Enslin: Haunted Mansion, Orlando. [Into tape recorder, as he prepares to step out the window onto a ledge] Mike Enslin: If something should happen, if I should slip and fall, I want it known that it was an accident. The room did not win. |
