Plot: Richard and Susan are a couple from San Diego, California who are vacationing in Morocco while their two children are at home with their Mexican housekeeper, Amelia. A rifle finds its way into the hands of a local herdsman's young sons, who recklessly take a shot at a tour bus and hit Susan in the shoulder, causing her severe injury. The distraught Richard calls home to tell Amelia of the situation, who shortly departs for Mexico to attend her son's wedding, with Richard and Susan's children in tow. Disaster thus multiplies, with the situation in Morocco ascribed to terrorists in the media, while Amelia meets with trouble at the Mexican border when she attempts to return to San Diego with Richard and Susan's children. Meanwhile, in Tokyo, a widower tied to the rifle in question, a complex shift of ownership to which the audience is privy, attempts to deal with the memories of his recently deceased wife and his strained relationship with his deaf teenage daughter.

Goofs

Continuity: During the phone call taking place when the bus is leaving, Richard's watch is clean. Before and after, it is covered with blood and grime.
Continuity: The tour guide's badge which is around his neck inside the village house disappears when he goes outside.
Continuity: Amelia's torn stockings from wandering in the desert repair themselves as she is brought into the immigration office.
Continuity: When the Amelia is lost in the desert with the kids, she decides to stop under a tree so the kids can rest. At this moment, one can clearly see that she is barefoot. Once she talks to the boy and starts walking away (leaving the kids behind) one can see that she is wearing shoes.
Crew: Camera shadow on Brad Pitt and the blue car as it passes him behind the stopped bus.
Crew: After Chieko takes her panties off she walks back up to the table with her friends. In this shot you can see the reflection of the steadicam arm, operator and an assistant in the mirror in the top left area of the screen.
Crew: When Amelia is in the desert, we can see one of the camera's shadow on the ground.
GEOG: After the wedding, Amelia, her nephew and the Jones children use the Tecate border crossing to reenter the USA. After fleeing, we are shown a sandy, wide desert where they wander. Actually, the Tecate border crossing is in the mountains, there is no such desert within a reasonable distance on the USA side. What is shown looks like an Arizona border crossing.
Continuity: When Chieko and Detective Mamiya are out on the balcony, there are no buildings close to hers when he is looking at the view they have from above the 30th floor. Later Chieko is on the balcony, nude, and her father comes to comfort her. As the movie ends, a long shot of their balcony is shown from their balcony's height and there are two buildings, one the same height, and one taller, right next to theirs that were not there earlier.
SYNC: When the two Japanese cops meet Chieko, the older one says his name is Amano Yoshio, but the subtitles read Amamo Yoshjo.

Quotes

Richard: What about you? How many wives do you have?
Anwar: I can only afford one.
Yussef: I killed the American, I was the only one who shot at you.
They did nothing... nothing. Kill me, but save my brother, he did
nothing... nothing. Save my brother... he did nothing.
Amelia: Help! Ayudame! HELP!
Richard: [to other tourists] You leave, I'll kill you. I'll kill you!
Richard: This is your fucked-up country, it's your responsibility!
[first lines]
Hassan: It's almost new. Three hundred cartridges. The guy who gave
it to me said you can hit as far as three kilometers.
[last lines]
Japanese newscaster: Susan Jones, who was wounded in a terrorist
attack in Morocco, was discharged from a Casablanca hospital this
morning, local time. The American people finally have a happy
ending, after five days of frantic phone calls and hand wringing.
In other news...
[last title card]
Title card: To my children, Maria Eladia and Elisio... the brightest
lights in the darkest night.
Mike Jones: My mom said Mexico is dangerous.
Santiago: [in Spanish] Yes, it's full of Mexicans.
Chieko: [signing] They look at us like we're monsters.
Chieko: [signing to ref] I'm deaf, not blind!
Susan Jones: Richard, why did we come here?
Richard: What d'you mean why? I thought you would like it.
Susan Jones: Really: Why are we here?
Richard: To forget everything. To be alone.
Susan Jones: Alone.
Richard: You understand? We gotta call nine-one-one.
Susan Jones: Don't leave me please.
Richard: Susan, what's wrong? Honey, what happened?
Lady On The Bus: Oh, my God. She's been shot.
Richard: Stop the bus, stop, my wife's been hurt.
Richard: Find me an ambulance! Do something!
