| Plot: | After auditions, 12 young dancers make it to the American Ballet Academy. They'll prepare for the student showcase to determine who will be asked to join the American Ballet Company. Tensions mount between Jonathan, the company's aging choreographer, and Cooper, his best dancer, who also wants to choreograph. The brilliant Maureen seems poised for success, but she discovers that life is passing her by. Jody, whose body may be the wrong type and whose technique is ragged, elicits Cooper's interest. The edgy, smart-mouthed Eva loves to dance but seems destined to be stuck in the back of the chorus. The showcase will decide their fates. |

Continuity: When Cooper is showing Charlie a move the front of his shirt is dry. In the next shot his shirt has a large sweat mark. Continuity: As Jody and Eva leave their room to smoke, the number on the door says 903C. When they run into Eric in the hall, he tells them to "come downstairs" to smoke. When the three arrive at his door, the number is 1103C. Continuity: In the beginning of the film, when Jody and Eva leave to smoke, the number on their dorm door says 903C, later when Jody, Maureen, and Eva leave to celebrate Eric's birthday, their dorm door says 903A. Revealing mistakes: The audience that watch the students' performance at the end of the movie is exactly the same as when the students go to watch the ballet at the beginning of the movie. Continuity: When Charlie and Jody are looking in the paper, Charlie has his arm behind Jody's head. When Jonathan gets onto them for talking, he moves it down, but when Cooper comes over and pulls the paper down, Charlie's arm is behind Jody's head again. Fact errors: Maureen's mother comments that Juliette's father managed a Walmart in New Jersey ("Perth Amboy"). However, the first Walmart in New Jersey didn't open until 1991. Continuity: When the Jonathan Reeves and Cooper are chatting in the theater, you see Eric coming down from the jump solidly in the background. In the next instant he has fallen over and injured his ankle. His landing from the jump shows no imbalance that would lead to an injury. Continuity: The pizza that Maureen is eating at the bowling alley changes between shots. Continuity: When Jody goes to a Broaway Dance Studio, she asks for a 5:30 class. After the class she tells Cooper that she had already had dinner, which shows that the class took place in the afternoon. However, right before they start warming up with the Mandy Moore song, two female dancers say hi to each other and one says, "Good Morning." Revealing mistakes: When Cooper is teaching Jody, Charlie and Erick the new steps, he is making them up as they go, but the understudies can be seen behind marking the double pirouette when Cooper hasn't even said it, as if they already knew what step was next. Revealing mistakes: When Cooper is talking to the widow right after the ballet in the beginning in between them you can see Jodie standing staring into the camera for several seconds waiting for her cue. Continuity: While Jody is at the Broadway Dance Studio warming up, the teacher instructs the dancers to move their left shoulders. As Cooper is entering and greeting the teacher, the dancers are alternating their shoulders before the teacher instructs them to, "alternate!" FAIR: During the last ballet sequence that has Jody dressed in red, in the beginning shot her point shoes are pink. In all shots afterward, they are red. This is because she is wearing pink shoes the entire performance leading up to this, and as the camera pans down her body and back up, she is in a new outfit with new hair and makeup. This is a transition to let the audience know without showing it, that there has been an intermission and Jody has changed. Continuity: When Jody goes to Cooper's performance of "Stars and Stripes," Kathleen asks her if she is a friend of Cooper's. In a scene previous, Jody brought Cooper dessert "for later" while Kathleen was with him so she had already seen her and would have known that Jody and Cooper were involved. |
Quotes

Jody Sawyer: She's so good. Eva: Yeah, just ask her. Maureen Cummings: I am the best goddamn dancer in the American Ballet Academy. Who the hell are you? Nobody. [In pas de deux class] Sergei: I am your slave. Eva Rodriguez: I'd believe it more if you weren't staring at your fucking reflection when you said it. Instructor: If someone wants to hear profanity, Miss Rodriguez, they can take a subway. They don't need to spend sixty dollars on a ballet ticket. [to Sergei] Instructor: Though she has a point. Maureen Cummings: Erik got injured today. And do you know the first thing I thought when I saw him go down? Jim Gordon: What? Maureen Cummings: "I wish that was me." So that made me think, you know, 'cause that's not a normal reaction. How much of what you liked about me was because I was a ballet dancer, and how much because I was me? Eva Rodriguez: I screwed up any chance I had back in September. But I started dancing long before this stupid workshop, and I'm gonna keep on dancing long after it. So tomorrow is one more day I get to dance. Anna: Did you see how *on* I was tonight? Jody Sawyer: Mom. Oh, I'm so happy you guys are here. Mr. Sawyer: We wanted to see what you've been up to this past year. And I've gotta tell you, that was the most fantastic thing I've ever seen. Mrs. Sawyer: It was great, honey. And just - just wonderful. Jody Sawyer: You wanna know something stupid? I'd actually started to believe I didn't need to hear that anymore. Eva Rodriguez: A girl's got a right to know what kind of hound she's saving herself for. Jody: Cooper, you're an amazing dancer, and you're a great choreographer, but as a boyfriend... you kinda suck. Eva Rodriguez: Truth? In terms of technique, you are behind. But the people here know what they're looking for. And on the day of you audition, they saw it. In you. Jody Sawyer: Now all they see is the wrong body type. Eva Rodriguez: What, did you go to a special bitch academy or something? Eva: What a prick. Jody: But he was really nice about it. Eva: Being nice when you say something pricky is even prickier. Erik Jones: I do ballet because it has nothing to do with the people. Give me tiaras and boys in tights any day. Erik Jones: That's Sergei, that's Jody, that's Eva, I'm Erik, and you're cute... Jim Gordon: Have you seen my girlfriend? Tall, Thin, legs for days? Eva: Yeah I pitched her overboard. Charlie: Are you asking me out? Jody: Well... yeah. Are you saying yes? Charlie: I guess so... yeah. Maureen Cummings: I'm just trying to be honest. That's what friends do. Eva: I guess that would explain why you have so many friends. Mrs. Cummings: You don't just throw away your dream. Maureen Cummings: It's your dream... and it means more to you than it ever did to me. Maureen Cummings: If this is what I wanted, I wouldn't be as unhappy as I've been. I'd have friends, I'd sleep well, I wouldn't throw up half the things that I eat. Nancy Cummings: You watch your weight, there's nothing wrong with that! Maureen Cummings: Mom, I'm telling you I'm unhappy and sick. I can't do this any more! Nancy Cummings: But it's your dream. You just don't give up on your dream. Maureen Cummings: It's your dream, and it matters more to you than anything ever did to me. So I did it, but I can't any more. Nancy Cummings: I know what regret feels like, and I don't want that for you. Maureen Cummings: That's what ballet would be... a life of wishing that I found something I loved, instead of something I just happened to do well. I'm not you, Mom. You didn't have the feet. I don't have the heart. Erik Jones: My stage name is Erik O. Jones after Oprah. She's my idol. Eva Rodriguez: Eva Rodriquez, after no one. Erik Jones: Oh, an individual. Eva: So, you know the story with this Maureen chick? Sergei: You're living with Maureen? Oh, good luck. Eva: Big time bitch? Sergei: Biggest time. Eva Rodriguez: [Sergei drops Maureen] Careful with that one. You break it, you bought it! Kathleen: You are in big trouble. Cooper: She's in my ballet. Kathleen: Oh please... she's a heartbeat away from tattooing your name on her ass. Jody: That class, I mean, how come I can't dance like that in my ABA class? Cooper: Because ABA has a great big stick up its ass? Maureen Cummings: I've got priorities. I mean, you only get to be a dancer for ten years - maybe fifteen if you don't get injured. So for the next decade at least... Jim Gordon: Hey, all I'm asking for is a date... Charlie: Whatever you feel, just dance it. Maureen Cummings: Look, you're a smart girl, Jody. If you turn in your application now, you can still get into a good college. Jody Sawyer: But... I don't want to go to college. I want to dance. Maureen Cummings: Yeah? Well so do a lot of people. Erik Jones: Where are you going? Eva: We're going out for a smoke Erik Jones: Come downstairs, it's Marlboro country! Jonathan Reeves: [waves to sit down] Jody Sawyer: Wait. All my life I've wanted to be one of ABC's perfect ballerinas. I wanted to be you, Juliette. But I'm not you, and I'm not perfect,I'm just me, bad feet and all, and I'm starting to think that I like that just as much. Jonathan Reeves: [begins to speak] Jody Sawyer: No, because if you're not going to offer me a place in the company I don't want to hear it. And if you are, I might not have the strength to say no, and then I would be spending my best dancing years in the back of a corps waving a rose back and forth, and I'm better than that. So thank you, Jonathan, for turning me into the best dancer I can be, I appreciate it more than I can say, really. Because the best dancer I can be is a principal in Cooper Neilson's new company. Jody Sawyer: [walks off] Cooper: If you're still holding onto all that personal shit... Jonathan Reeves: I don't have to hold onto anything. I got the girl. Nancy Cummings: You don't just throw away your dream. Maureen Cummings: It's your dream... and it means more to you than it ever did to me. Jody Sawyer: Margot Fonteyn didn't have great feet. Jonathan Reeves: Well when Margot Fonteyn was on stage, you couldn't tear your eyes away from her. Pft. It can't be taught. Instructor: Just dance the shit outta there! |
