| Plot: | At the end of mankind on Earth, the scientists build a self-sufficient underground city for a few people in order to preserve the human race for two hundred years. They leave also instructions for the future generations to return to the surface of the planet in a steel box that should be kept by the mayors through the generations. However, the instructions are lost and the inhabitants stay in the city that is completely deteriorated. The power generator has problems and the blackouts are longer and more frequent and the city is running out of food that needs to be rationed. On the Assignment Day, the teenagers Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow are assigned to work with the pipework and as messenger, but they swap their job positions. Lina, who is the descendant of the seventh mayor, finds the box of instructions in the house of her grandmother and shows it to her friend Doon. They decide to explore the way out of the city and they discover that the corrupt major and his henchmen are stealing food from the population. When they are hunted by the major's hoodlums, they have to find the way out of Ember to survive and save the populations from the imminent darkness and the end of the city. |

Continuity: The scene where Doon is watching the boat follow its track, the boat automatically launches into the water. Yet when the three get into the boat, the boat does not launch until Doon pulls a lever. Continuity: When Lina Mayfleet receives her red messenger poncho she puts it on quickly and begins lacing up the one side. She never finishes and does a cruddy job. When she runs out the door thereafter, she is interrupted when she reaches the door to verify she knows protocol. Her poncho is perfectly laced at this point. Continuity: As Doon is walking to look at the Generator room, a girl in full orange work gear and yellow boots walks across the control room and towards a hall. The shot changes to the door. Then when it goes back to Doon, the same girl(orange gear, yellow boots) gets up from the left and starts walking across the room again, before the shot changes back to the door. Continuity: After Doon and Lina jump through the hole and run away to escape from the giant mole, Lina suddenly is wearing a miners helmet. In the succeeding scene the helmet is gone again. PLOT: SPOILER: When Doon, Lina and Poppy ride the boat out of Ember, they slide down a long water cave... but end up high in the mountains. Even though they had climbed up a long stairs on the way out, it wasn't enough to make them reach that high knowing ember is hundreds of feet below earth. |

Loris Harrow: [narrating] On the day the world ended, the fate of mankind was carried in a small metal box. In a secret location, architects, scientists and engineers met and concluded that there was only one hope for our future: to build an underground city designed to keep its citizens protected for generations to come. The box was entrusted to the first mayor, who was to pass it on to her successor. As the years counted down, the box passed from mayor to mayor. None knew what secrets it held, only that it would open when it was needed most. But fate ran another course, and the chain was broken. The box was tucked away and forgotten, and as the city grew old and began to crumble, the box quietly clicked open. Loris Harrow: [narrating] Lina and Doon tied their hope to a rock and tossed it down toward the city. The rock could've ended up on a roof. Or kicked into a gutter. But fate ran another course. And the message found its way. Now the path was clear for all. All of us who kept the flame of Ember burning, through the darkness, so that we could live again on the earth, in the air and the light. Loris Harrow: [to Doon] Builders were wise when they said, "If you have proof, you have to pursue it!" There's more to a bottle cap than keeping liquid from leaking out of glass! Doon Harrow: The Builders left instructions. Loris Harrow: The Builders abandoned us. Doon Harrow: No, they didn't. They didn't, Dad. I have proof. Loris Harrow: Show me. Doon Harrow: Sul, what are you doing up here? Sul: This thing is jammed stuck. I've gotta free it. Doon Harrow: How do you know that's what you should do? Sul: [pause] It's my job! Doon Harrow: My dad made this. Lina Mayfleet: It doesn't look very safe. Doon Harrow: That's my dad. Loris Harrow: Pay attention, pay attention to everything, everything you see. Notice what no one else notice, and you'll see what no one else knows, What you get is what you get, what you do with what you get, that's more the point. Doon Harrow: How do you explain that this used to be so small? Loris Harrow: You're gonna give yourself a headache. Doon Harrow: The Generator's our only source of power. If it goes, we all go. Loris Harrow: That's dramatic. Doon Harrow: Dad, this place is falling apart. I will not sit around while Ember collapses. I am getting in to that generator, whatever it takes. [Lina has just seen a man, who ventured into the wilderness, captured by the authorities] Lina Mayfleet: Why would he risk being thrown in jail, when everyone knows it's against the law to go out there? Doon Harrow: I got lost, I'm sorry! Looper: Get lost again! [throws him to the ground] Loris Harrow: What can you do about it? Hmm? What can *you* do about it? Mrs. Murdo: Who built our city, dear? Lina Mayfleet: The... Builders? Lina Mayfleet: [fearfully] What... was that? Lina Mayfleet: [crying] That's what scares me the most. What if we count down to nothing? |
