| Plot: | Cal Trask is a particularly unhappy young man. He sees himself as the black sheep of the family and is always competing with his brother Aron, who seems to be perfect in almost every way. Aron is also their father's favorite and Cal desperately wants his father's love and affection. It's the period leading up to America's entry into World War I and these are tumultuous times. After his father loses most of his fortune trying to ship refrigerated lettuce to New York, Cal decides to speculate on a crop of beans and makes a small fortune but he soon realizes that he can't buy his father's loves either. Cal's discovery that his mother is alive - he and Aron were told that she had died - and that she is a madam leads to a final, tragic result for all three of the Trask men. |

DATE: In one scene, a band plays "Avalon". The film is set in 1917. "Avalon" was not published until 1920. Continuity: Will Hamilton's shorts are visible at one point as he is drying off and talking to Cal after his shower. Continuity: While Cal is talking to Abra on the roof, in the close-ups, the light in her bedroom is seemingly on, whereas in the wide shot, her room is pitch black. Continuity: Near the beginning of the movie after Cal climbs up on the train, the position of the sleeves around his neck changes between shots. Also the long shot shows him covering his arms with the jumper, but in the close shot his arms are still outside. SYNC: At one point, when the Ferris wheel has stopped, Cal jumps off to help Aron. In one of the next shots the wheel is shown moving again. DATE: Early in the movie after Cal rides the train to Salina, you can see a modern day automobile in the upper right of the scene showing the view of a field. Continuity: Towards the end of the movie, the window that Aron breaks is different between shots. DATE: During WWI, a band organ at the carnival plays "Ain't She Sweet", which is from 1927. Revealing mistakes: Burl Ives drives James Dean home at the beginning of the film in a right-hand drive car. SYNC: When Cal is leaving Kate's office, we can hear the doorknob, but in the mirror on the wall we cannot see him. CHAR: When Cal swings on a rope to greet Will Hamilton in the gym, he says "Hi, Mr. Albrecht." Mr. Albrecht is another character entirely. |

Cal Trask: Man has a choice and it's a choice that makes him a man. [refusing Cal's gift of money] Adam Trask: If you want to give me a present, give me a good life. That's something I can value. [Abra pleads with Adam to reconcile with his son] Abra: Mr. Trask, it's awful not to be loved. It's the worst thing in the world. Don't ask me - even if you could - how I know that. I just know it. It makes you mean, and violent, and cruel. And that's the way Cal has always felt, Mr. Trask. All his life! Maybe you didn't mean it that way - but it's true. You never gave him your love. You never asked for his. You never asked him for one thing. Abra: But you must give him some sign, Mr. Trask, some sign that you love him... or he'll never be a man. All his life he'll feel guilty and alone unless you release him. Adam Trask: [Adam gives Cal the bible to read] Start at the fifth verse. Verse 5. Cal Trask: [Cal begins to read...] "I acknowledge my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah." Adam Trask: Go on. Cal Trask: [he continues] Six.. Adam Trask: And I suggest a little slower, Cal. And you don't have to read the verse numbers. Cal Trask: [Cal continues on] "For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee. And surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him. Selah." Seven.. Adam Trask: Not the numbers, Cal... Cal Trask: [Cal abruptly furthers reading] "Thou art my hiding place, thou shalt preserve me from trouble, thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah." [pause] *Eight*... Adam Trask: You have no repentance! You're bad! Through and through, bad! Kate: [after Cal asks why she shot his father] Because he tried to hold me, he tried to tie me down! Nobody holds me! Abra: [telling Cal she loves him] I was even thinking I was bad. I love you even though I'm afraid of you. Maybe someday I won't be. Cal Trask: Hey Aron, why don't you ask me where I've been? Aron Trask: Would you tell me? Cal Trask: No. |
