| Plot: | The mysterious and charismatic Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin is a driver for one of London's most notorious organized crime families of Eastern European origin. The family itself is part of the Vory V Zakone criminal brotherhood. Headed by Semyon, whose courtly charm as the welcoming proprietor of the plush Trans-Siberian restaurant impeccably masks a cold and brutal core, the family's fortunes are tested by Semyon's volatile son and enforcer, Kirill, who is more tightly bound to Nikolai than to his own father. But Nikolai's carefully maintained existence is jarred once he crosses paths at Christmastime with Anna Khitrova, a midwife at a North London hospital. Anna is deeply affected by the desperate situation of a young teenager who dies while giving birth to a baby. Anna resolves to try to trace the baby's lineage and relatives. The girl's personal diary also survives her; it is written in Russian, and Anna seeks answers in it. Anna's mother Helen does not discourage her, but Anna's irascible Russian-born uncle Stepan urges caution. He is right to do so; by delving into the diary, Anna has accidentally unleashed the full fury of the Vory. With Semyon and Kirill closing ranks and Anna pressing her inquiries, Nikolai unexpectedly finds his loyalties divided. The family tightens its grip on him; who can, or should, he trust? Several lives - including his own - hang in the balance as a harrowing chain of murder, deceit, and retribution reverberates through the darkest corners of both the family and London itself. |

Continuity: When Anna visits Nikolai in the hospital after the knife fight, he is shown lying in his bed, and he turns his head to look at her, but when the camera shifts back to him, his head hasn't moved and he is still looking straight ahead. Fact errors: Azim and his nephew Ekrem are all apparently Turkish characters and Azim is part of the Turkish mafia. However, the Turkish spoken by the actors is heavily broken and pronounced entirely improperly, the Turkish words and dialog are clearly phonetically memorized. Continuity: In the last river scene, the baby is alternately crying or sleeping as the camera angle switches back and forth. Fact errors: In the end credits, "Make up" is listed as "Maek up" at one point. Miscellaneous: When Nikolai is in the hospital, the green number (blood pressure or pulse rate?) on the screen next to his pulse reading increases dramatically (~20) between shots. Continuity: SPOILER: When Soyka's dead body is shown washed up on shore, his pant leg is rolled-up above the knee cap. There is a camera angle change, and Soyka's pants are below the knee cap. The crime scene detective rolls the pants up and shows the star tattoo on the knee cap to the other officers. Revealing mistakes: While at the party, Nikolai has the young girl on his lap. They are drinking what appears to be a fifth of vodka. The girl seems to take a drink, but the vodka never reaches the neck of the bottle. She never makes a motion to swallow and immediately she kisses Nikolai. He motions for her to feed him some of the vodka. Again the vodka never reaches the neck of the bottle. Continuity: After being admitted to the family, Nikolai goes to the cellar to tell Kirill. They both drink brandy from a bottle and its content varies from almost full to half empty between shots. Crew: When Anna approaches the Trans-Siberian Restaurant for the first time, a crew member's arm and equipment are visible reflected in the shiny brass plaque to the left of the door. Continuity: When Nikolai is sitting in the chair in the brothel, his jacket sleeve is pulled up to his elbow. When Kiril pulls Nikolai to his feet, the sleeve is pulled all the way down. Continuity: When Nikolai and Semyon are drinking vodka during the diary exchange, Semyon empties his glass, but when he puts it back on the table it is full. Continuity: In the scene where Nikolai is returning the bike to Anna at one point he pulls out a black cloth and wipes off one of the handlebars. A few seconds later however the cloth has vanished. GEOG: The scenes involving the football crowds make no logical sense for a real match at Stamford Bridge. In the first shot, the crowd is exiting the ground via the Britannia Gate on Fulham Road after a game. In the second shot, the crowd is moving from Fulham Broadway along Fulham Road towards the Britannia Gate (as it would before a game); in the third shot, a crowd of people is crossing Lillee Road and entering Brompton Cemetary via the north gate (as it would before a game) but in the next shot (in the cemetery itself), the crowd is moving in the opposite direction, towards the north gate and away from the ground as it would after a game. Fact errors: Tatiana has been on heroin according to the diary, and has had several shots recently, as can be seen on the needle marks. Therefore, the baby was addicted at birth and has to be treated with methadone or such. At 3 months of age, the baby should have the drugs out of his system. How much was in his system at birth depends on how soon before delivery the mother took drugs. The long term effects are dependent on the amount of drugs given to the mother especially if there was drug use in the first trimester. Many times there is a delay of several years before difficulties begin to appear, especially at school-age when learning difficulties become evident. CHAR: When Anna is leaving Trans-Siberian for the second time, Nicolai kisses her goodbye once on each cheek. Anyone who has ever been to a Russian house for a visit knows that Russians kiss three times back, once on each cheek, returning back to the first cheek for the last kiss. Revealing mistakes: During the public baths scene, when Nikolaï (Viggo Mortensen) walks toward the camera with Azim, you can clearly see on Viggo's left shoulder the Elvish tattoo he got while in New Zealand for the Lord of the Rings shooting (the tattoo is "nine" in elvish Tengwar writing). Revealing mistakes: After Helen takes the baby out of the bed and carries her to Anna, for a short moment the baby breaks the fourth wall, clearly looking into the camera and at the camera crew. |
Quotes
|
Nikolai Luzhin: Forget any of this happened. Stay away from people like me. Nikolai Luzhin: Sometimes, if things are closed, you just, open them up. Semyon: Soyka had brothers. Nikolai Luzhin: Kirill has me. Stepan: Anna, how come is it that your boyfriend isn't here to carve? Anna: I don't live with Oliver anymore, Uncle Stepan. I'm living back here for a bit. Helen: For as long as you want. Stepan: I knew he would run away. Anna: He didn't run away. Christ, you make me sound like a burning building. Anna: Black men always run away. Helen: Oh Stepan! Shut up! Stepan: I am allowed to be honest? Helen: He was a doctor, Stepan. Anna: What the hell has that got to do with anything? Stepan: It's not natural to mix race and race. That's why your baby died inside you. Anna: Why are you doing this, why are you helping us? Nikolai Luzhin: I can't become king if someone else already sits on the throne. Anna: My uncle has gone missing, since I told you about him translating the diary. Nikolai Luzhin: Your uncle is fine, he is in Edinburgh, in a 5-Star Hotel. I was ordered to send him to Heaven with a bullet in his brain... instead I gave him a first class ticket to Scotland. He is old-school, he understands things... exile or death. Kirill: [about Nikolai] He is no driver, he is the undertaker. [repeated line] Nikolai Luzhin: I'm the driver. Anna: So you've read the diary. How can you keep doing what you're doing? Nikolai Luzhin: I'm just a driver. Azim: [referring to the bathhouse] Semyon recommends this place for business meetings, because you can see what tattoos a man has. Come on, we have a lot to cover. Let's cook. Semyon: It's always good to have someone who I can trust, to do simple tasks. In this business, sometimes the biggest danger comes from the most stupid things. [after thawing Soyka's corpse] Nikolai Luzhin: [to Azim] Are you finished cutting his hair? [Nikolai takes out Soyka's frozen wallet] Nikolai Luzhin: I thought you might want $6.50 from his pocket. Nikolai Luzhin: [referring to Soyka] Okay. Now I'm going to do his teeth and cut off his fingers. You might want to leave room. [Nikolai motions for Azim to go away, and then puts out his cigarette on his tongue] [after Anna hands Semyon a copy of Tatiana's diary] Semyon: I will need my spectacles and a clear head. Today I broke my rules and I drank vodka. Tomorrow I will translate it, and then I will bring what I've done to your home. Anna: Have you ever met a girl named Tatiana? Nikolai Luzhin: I meet lot of girls named Tatiana. Anna: She was pregnant. Nikolai Luzhin: Ah, in that case - no, I've never heard of her. Anna: She died on my shift. Nikolai Luzhin: I thought you did birth? Anna: Sometimes birth and death go together. She came in with needle punches all over both arms. Probably a prostitute, at the age of fourteen. Do you think Semyon's son knew her? Nikolai Luzhin: [growing agitated] I am driver. I go left, I go right, I go straight ahead - that's it. Nikolai Luzhin: Sentimental value? Ah. I heard of that. Nikolai Luzhin: [to Kirilenko] Stay alive a little longer. Nikolai Luzhin: Kirill, we don't kill little babies. Nikolai Luzhin: I need you to take Semyon out of the picture. I want you to arrest him. Yuri: Arrest him for what? Nikolai Luzhin: Rape. The girl was 14. Yuri: And of course she will testify? Nikolai Luzhin: She is dead, but she had Semyon's baby. If you can prove baby was his, and girl was underage, that is statutory rape. You have baby, you need Semyon's DNA. For poetic reasons, I suggest you take his blood. [first lines] Azim: He says "Christmas." So I say to him, [in Turkish] "Should we go shopping?" [English] The kid's 16. He says, "But uncle, it's Christmas." [last lines] Tatiana's Voice: My name is Tatiana. My father died in the mines in my village, so he was already buried when he died. We were all buried there. Buried under the soil of Russia. That is why I left, to find a better life. Anna: How did you get in here? Semyon: There are always open doors, Anna Ivanovna. Semyon: So, you know where I am...and now I know where you are, Anna Ivanovna. Nikolai Luzhin: Anger is dangerous. It makes people do stupid things. |
