Plot: A kind inventor is almost finished piecing together his latest creation when fate prevents him from completing his most important project. Edward may seem dangerous, with scissors instead of hands, but when a compassionate Avon lady comes calling, it's clear that things are going to be changing for Edward who has been alone in the large empty mansion. What they both don't realize is that the most important change of all won't be found in Edward but in the residents of the sleep suburbs he will be calling home, and a young teenage girl who's eyes will be opened.

Goofs

Continuity: Joyce's cigarette when Peg comes to the house.
Continuity: Peggy's glasses while she puts cream on Edward's face to fix his scars.
Continuity: When his bush sculptures are finished, most of them are much higher than the original hedges.
Continuity: At the "bed time story" scene, the granddaughter of older Kim is covered all the way to her neck. A couple of shots after, she's suddenly covered just below her chest.
Crew: Near the end, when Kim is running up the stairs in the mansion, a crew member can be seem ducking down at the bottom of the huge window on the left.
Revealing mistakes: When Kim startles Edward after seeing him in the mirror, you can see the board that replaced the water bed as he jumps up from between the water fountains.
Continuity: After receiving a phone call, Joyce looks for something to wear, throwing clothes on her bed behind her. She grabs a burgundy colored article of clothing, but, when she meets her friends on the corner, she is wearing yellow and green.
Crew: When Peg leaves Edward to answer the phone after she gives him the clothes, she (obviously) leaves the room. Just as she is about to walk back into the room, white cue tape placed right where Peg stands is visible.
Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: in the climax of the movie when Jim is hitting Edward with the "iron" bar, it bends noticeably.
Continuity: SPOILER: When Edward stabs Jim in the stomach, Jim falls out of the window. When we see Jim on the ground, he is bleeding out of his chest.
Continuity: SPOILER: During the fight scene in the attic, the slashes in Jim's leather jacket are no longer bloody. And when he's knocked to the floor, they disappear completely.
Continuity: After Edward tells the Boggs family about Joyce taking all her clothes off, Peg is sitting still (surprised) holding a fork in her right hand, in the next shot she is holding her food with both hands.
Continuity: In the diner, Kim's straw in her glass is at an angle, in the next shot it is completely upright.
Continuity: When Bill is watching TV in the garden, Edward is standing right next to him, in the next shot Edward is further away and starts walking towards Bill again.
CHAR: When Kevin places the hose pipe on the ground, he doesn't actually turn off the water tap.
Continuity: In the scene at the diner, the Boggs son has his hand on a tomato sauce bottle. In the next angle, we see he is putting the bottle down onto the table without picking it up in the first place.
GEOG: In the scene where Peg stands by the gate leading into the garden by the mansion where she meets Edward for the first time, acres and fields are visible just behind the gate, even though this is supposed to take place on top of small mountain.
Continuity: There is no egg on the whisks of the cookie-making machine after mixing.
Continuity: When Peg first brings Edward to her house, she clearly parks her vehicle on the left side of the house. When everyone is seen gathering around the corner, the car is no longer there, though Peg has not left the house.
PLOT: At the time of the break-in at Jim's house, Edward is wearing dark clothes and a cap unlike what he can be seen wearing at other times throughout the film. He has previously demonstrated an inability to dress himself, and with this in mind it is strange that everybody assumes that he committed the burglary by himself.
Fact errors: In the first shot of the husbands driving off to work, the house next to the religious woman's house is being tented. The next day the women are at Peg's door and the house is visible without the tent. Fumigation requires 72 hour tenting.
Continuity: The first dog that Edward gives a haircut to changes breeds before and after it's hair was cut.
Revealing mistakes: On one version the movie poster of Edward's profile, there is a grammatical error. It says, "The Story of a Uncommonly Gentle Man", when it should clearly say "...an uncommonly..."
Continuity: When all the dogs are waiting in line to be groomed, Edward has Joyce's dog sitting on a single, long table; the only table visible before Joyce's dog is groomed. When Edward begins to groom Joyce's dog, a small, square table can be seen next to the table that Joyce's dog is supposedly sitting on. The longer table disappears. After Joyce's dog is groomed, the smaller table disappears, replaced with the longer table that Joyce's dog was originally sitting on.
Continuity: The cookies coming out of the cookie-making machine has four different shapes. The 'feet' of the machine which shapes the cookies has only two different shapes; stars and hearts.
CHAR: When Peg wants to bandage her daughter's injured left hand, Kim raises her right hand initially, but quickly offers her left hand instead.
Revealing mistakes: When Edward unlocks the door after everyone leaves to find him, we can see some white cue tape where he is meant to stand (Open matte only).
GEOG: Basements do not exist in any home located in the sub-division where the movie was filmed.
Revealing mistakes: Visible line attached to the "sculpted" Bear when Denny knocks it over with the van.

Quotes

  Kim: Hold me.
Edward: I can't.
Kim: You're here... They didn't hurt you, did they? [Edward shakes
his head] Were you scared? I tried to make Jim go back, but, you
can't make Jim do anything. Thank you for not telling them that
we...
Edward: You're welcome.
Kim: It must have been awful when they told you whose house it was.
Edward: I knew it was Jim's house.
Kim: You... you did?
Edward: Yes.
Kim: ...Well, then why'd you do it?
Edward: Because you asked me to.
Bill: So Edward, did you have a productive day?
Edward: Mrs Monroe showed me where the salon's going to be.
[turns to Peg]
Edward: You could have a cosmetics counter.
Peg Boggs: Oh, wouldn't that be great!
Bill: Great.
Edward: And then she showed me the back room where she took all of
her clothes off.
[everyone stares, Kevin snickers]
Peg Boggs: The light concealing cream goes on first. Then you blend,
and blend, and blend. Blending is the secret.
Jim: [after seeing Edward accidentally cut Kim] Hey! Now you've done
it!
Kim: It was just a scratch Jim, really!
Peg Boggs: What's going on?
Jim: Call a doctor, he skewered Kim!
Kim: He didn't skewer me!
Jim: [now bullying and shoving Edward] You can't touch anything
without destroying it! Who the hell do you think you are hanging
around here, huh? Get the hell outta here! Go you freak!
Jim: [to Kim] He tried to hurt you.
Kim: No he did not and you know it!
Jim: Are you nuts? I just saw him!
Kim: Jim, I don't love you anymore I just want you to go, ok? Just
go!
Jim: Are you serious? Losing me to a loser like that? He isn't even
human!
Kim: Just get out of here ok, just go!
Kim: [after Jim has left] Dad, did you see where Edward went?
Bill: No, he just waltzed down the street.
Bill: Sweetheart, you can't buy the necessities of life with cookies.
Jim: Forget about holding her hand, man. Think about the damage he
could do to other places.
[last lines]
Kim: You see, before he came down here, it never snowed. And
afterwards, it did. If he weren't up there now... I don't think it
would be snowing. Sometimes you can still catch me dancing in it.
Esmerelda: I can't believe you sheep have strayed so far from the
path of righteousness!
Edward: [Walking towards Esmerelda] We're not sheep!
Bill: Soup's on!
Edward: I thought this was shish kabob.
[Joyce offers Edward lemonade]
Joyce: Lemonade?
[Edward pukes]
Jim: I'd give my left nut to see that again.
Peg Boggs: Why are you hiding back there? You don't have to hide from
me - I'm Peg Boggs, your local Avon representative and I'm as
harmless as cherry pie... [sees Edward come toward her] Oh - I can
see that I've disturbed you. I'll just be going now...
Edward: Don't go.
Peg Boggs: [sees his scissor hands] Oh, my. What happened to you?
Edward: I'm not finished.
Edward: Goodbye.
[Kim kisses Edward]
Kim: I love you.
Officer Allen: Will he be OK, Doc?
Psychologist: The years spent in isolation have not equipped him with
the tools necessary to judge right from wrong. He's had no context.
He's been completely without guidance. Furthermore, his work - the
garden sculptures, hairstyles and so forth - indicate that he's a
highly imaginative... uh... character. It seems clear that his
awareness of what we call reality is radically underdeveloped.
Officer Allen: But will he be all right out there?
Psychologist: Oh yeah, he'll be fine.
Peg Boggs: Darn this stuff!
various characters: I know a doctor who might be able to help you.
Host-TV: Quite a story, yes? Any questions for Edward? Yeah, get way
over. Stand right up.
Audience Member #1: What's been the best part of your new life here
in town?
Edward: The friends I made.
Host-TV: Any other questions?
Audience Member #2: Have you ever thought of having corrective
surgery or prosthetics? I know a doctor that might be able to help
you.
Edward: I'd like to meet him.
Host-TV: We'll give that name after the show. Thank you very much.
That's very nice. Anyone else? Yes, stand right up.
Audience Member #3: But if you had regular hands you'd be like
everyone else.
Edward: Yes, I know.
Host-TV: I think he'd like that.
Audience Member #4: Then no one would think you're special. You
wouldn't be on TV or anything.
Peg Boggs: No matter what, Edward will always be special.
George: Eddie. The guys and I were talking, we'd like want to invite
you to our card game on Friday night. Would you like that? Only
thing is, you can't cut!
[Kevin has brought Edward to his class for show and tell]
Kevin: One chop to a guy's neck, and it's all over.
[Edward does a karate pose; the class gasps in unison]
Kim: Edward, I was so afraid. I thought you were dead.
Jim: [coming into the screen with a revolver] I didn't.
Kim: [threatening Jim with Edward's scissors] STOP IT! Or I'll kill
you myself!
Jim: [Jim slaps her and kicks her away] Bullshit!
Jim: [to Edward who is approaching Kim] Hey, I said stay away from
her!
The Inventor: I know it is a little early for Christmas, Edward, but;
I have a present for you. [shows Edward his soon to be human hands]
Edward: Kevin, you wanna play scissors, paper, stone again?
Kevin: No!
Edward: Why not?
Kevin: 'Cause it's boring. I always win!
Suzanne: [at the dinner table, Edward hands her some meat with his
scissors] I can't eat that, he used his hands. I think it's
unsanitary.
Joyce: [after Edward cuts her hair] That was the single most
thrilling experience of my entire life.
Kim: Why can't you do it?
Jim: Because my father keeps the damn room locked. We need Edward to
get us in.
Kim: Well can't you just take the key when he's sleeping or
something?
Jim: You don't understand. The only thing that guy hangs onto tighter
is his dick.
Officer Allen: We're looking for the man with the hands.
[first lines]
Kim: Snuggle in, sweetie. It's cold out there.
Bill: OK, everybody. Grab your plates. Soup's on.
Edward: [with mouth full] I thought this was shish-ka-bob.
Bill: What?
Edward: [a little clearer] I thought this was shish-ka-bob.
Bill: Yeah, it is shish-ka-bob. It's a figure of speech, Ed.
Esmerelda: He has been sent first to tempt you. But it's not too
late. You must push him from you, expel him! Trample down the
perversion of nature!
Esmerelda: It's not heaven he's from! It's straight from the stinking
flames of hell! The power of Satan is in him, I can feel it. Can't
you? Have you poor sheep strayed so far from the path?
Edward: We're not sheep.
Esmerelda: Don't come near me!
Edward: I am not complete.
