| Plot: | Frank Goode lives by himself in Elmira, NY, a recent widow with heart trouble, retired from a factory job, proud of having pushed his adult children toward success. In the summer, all four kids bail on a reunion, so, against doctor's orders, Frank decides to surprise each with a visit. He sets out to see his artist son in New York City, his daughter the ad exec in Chicago, his son the conductor on tour and presently in Denver, and his daughter who's a performer in Vegas. None are as he imagines or hopes. Will they let him see themselves as they are, and can this dad adapt? |

Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: The turkey Frank removes from the oven in the final scene is obviously a cold turkey not recently cooked. The skin is shriveled and no steam is coming from the pan. GEOG: When they were first in the limo in Vegas, the car was heading south on LVB, passing the Excalibur on the right. A minute later, the mid-strip hotels were also on the right. This is impossible - unless driving backwards. GEOG: The shots of Union Station in Chicago where he gets on the train are of a train station in Connecticut. The Union Station in Chicago does not have mezzanine sitting for coffee. Continuity: SPOILER: At the end of the movie when Frank is back home, there is a scene that opens up in the living room, where you see a framed wedding photo on a side table next to an armchair. When Frank goes to place the old Christmas photo he'd intended to give to David on the bookshelf with the other pictures, you can see the wedding photo on the same shelf to the left and when the camera zooms out to the whole room, there is no picture on the side table anymore. GEOG: Wine is not sold in supermarkets in New York State. FAIR: Rosie changes her utensil-holding hand between childhood and adulthood, but this not unheard of. GEOG: When Frank takes the train from Chicago to Denver he passes some beautiful scenery, including various desert mesas as well as Glenwood Canyon, both things one would see when approaching Denver via Amtrak from the west, not the east. Fact errors: During the film, telephone conversations are heard as if coming from the "wires" on the poles next to the track or road. Long distance telephone lines have been buried below ground in cables and later, fiber optic lines, since the 1950s. The wires shown are electric or signaling wires. Continuity: In the scene where Frank's kids visit their father in the hospital, Robert's arms shift from crossed in the head-on shots to extended (leaning on the bed frame) in the side-angle shots. Continuity: When Frank visits Rosie at her apartment, after he enters no one closes the door. In a later shot, when Rosie's friend arrives with the baby, she knocks on the now closed door. Continuity: When Frank takes off with the plane where he has the heart attack, it is obviously a sort of Airbus plane, but when the paramedics carry him to the ambulance, the plane is a semi-personal one, smaller. |

[first lines] Butcher: You Keeping busy? Frank Goode: Yeah, I've been busy. Butcher: Busy doin' what? Frank Goode: Busy in the garden. Butcher: [wryly] In the garden, you now what, you're missing work, that's what, I can see that. Frank Goode: No I'm not missing work. Butcher: Yeah, you miss the buzz and the jokes and the guys, I know that, don't tell me that's not true. Wine Man: Well, we got wines from all over the world. We got, uh, English wines from France, we got Italian wines from all over Europe. Frank Goode: [showing photos of his children to a stranger] A million feet of wire to get them where they are today. Hooker: You wanna see my leg? Frank Goode: Wanna see mine? Rosie: We could just talk to mom. Frank Goode: Oh, but you couldn't just talk to me? Rosie: Well she was a good listener, you were a good talker. Frank Goode: Well so that's good, we made a good team. Art Gallery Girl: He used to say that if it wasn't for his dad he never would have become an artist. He said he would have ended up painting walls, and that dogs pee on walls... [last lines] Frank Goode: If you would ask me I would have to say in all honesty, Everybody's fine. Everybody's fine. |
