| Plot: | According to Boston Red Sox super fan Ben Wrightman, finding romance is just as likely as his beloved team winning the World Series. But then Ben meets Lyndsey Meeks, and suddenly anything's possible. Well... until Spring Training begins, and Lindsey sees Ben on ESPN in Florida acting like an idiot. But these games don't count, and she knows that there may be trouble once the first pitch is thrown. But she seems fine about it, because as she competes for a promotion, she says Ben won't be affected by her at work all the time. But things really get out of hand when Lyndsey gets hit by a line drive foul ball off of Baltimore Orioles' Miguel Tejada, and the Sox begin to loose. The relationship picks up, but when Lyndsey gives Ben the opportunity to go to Paris with her, he turns it down, because Seattle's rolling in and the Sox are 3 1/2 games behind New York and Ben says that they need him. Later, the Red Sox are in the ALCS against New York, and fall behind three games to none. Then, Ben decides to sell his Red Sox tickets to make Lyndsey happy and say that he loves her. She's at Game 4, and Lindsey has to find a way to get him to stop selling his tickets, and can the Sox finally win it all? |

Goofs
|
Continuity: After Ben intercepts the pass when playing football, there's a player in an orange shirt in front of him. In the next shot, the player in the orange shirt is behind him. Crew: Reflected in Troy's sunglasses at the game where Ben is explaining how the team was a second family. Continuity: When the ball is fouled off by Miguel Tejada and hits Lindsay, the pitch is a left-handed submarine pitch. During the late news, it is a regular left-handed pitch. DATE: The banners hanging outside Fenway with dates of World Championships on them were not there in 1980. Fact errors: After Lindsay is hit with the foul ball, they watch the replay on SportsCenter. The announcer says Miguel Tejada (the Baltimore Oriole's Shortstop) hit the foul ball. But on the clip, the batter is white. Tejada, who is from the Dominican Republic, is dark skinned. Fact errors: When Ben attends his first game in 1980, as he and his uncle walk up the ramp and sit down, the score board on the Green Monster changes from the old version (AL scores only) at Ben's first glance, to the newer version (including the NL scores) faintly visible behind batting practice players and back to the old version. Continuity: When Lindsey is talking to her mom in the kitchen, you can see a glass of beer by a plate of cookies. In the next shot the glass is gone then it reappears in the next shot beside the coffee pot. Revealing mistakes: In the first scene when young Ben walks into Fenway Park, Jim Rice and Dennis Eckersley are clearly their 2004 selves, and look considerably different than they did in 1980. Fact errors: SPOILER: The final scene when Lindsay runs across the field is ripe with errors. First, the broadcast would not have shown her on TV (networks do not show streakers to discourage people from doing it). Next, the security guards would never have let her reach the home plate stands, let alone stand and talk to Ben. Finally, the Green Monster scoreboard clearly depicts the top of the fifth inning against Tampa Bay - not the 9th inning of game 4 of the ALCS, when the scene takes place. Fact errors: SPOILER: In addition to incorrectly showing Lindsey's dash across the field on TV, she is shown from a handheld camera that must be *on* the field. There would be no such TV camera on the field during a game, only after the game has ended. Continuity: The foul ball that hit Lindsey was pitched by Mike Myers , who was shown on screen using a sidearm delivery. The Sportscenter replay clearly shows an overhand delivery. Fact errors: When it is opening day at Fenway they are playing the Texas Rangers but the announcer calls Rocco Balldelli to the plate and he is on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Fact errors: During game 4 of the ALCS while it is showing Ben, in the background we can hear an announcement for the Yankees' John Olerud. Olerud did not play at all during that game. Continuity: When Lindsey is talking to her mom in the kitchen, there is a plate on the counter with only four cookies on it. In the next shot, when her mother picks up the plate to offer some to her, the plate is full. Continuity: When Ben tells his class there will be a test next week, the pen and paper on the desk of the kid with the broken arm move between shots. DATE: In a scene set in 1980, Uncle Carl's car shows a modern Massachusetts emissions sticker on the windshield. SYNC: During the party scene we hear the song "O Babe, What Would You Say" By Norman 'Hurricane' Smith. The saxophone player at the party seems to be playing but it is the sax solo from the original song that we hear. Fact errors: The Park scene, according to City of Boston Park rules and regulations, could not legally exist. Ben says in his 'list of things I like about you' Lindsey drinks in the middle of the day, inferring that there is liquor in her cup. According to Section 1 Subsection G 'No person can have in his or her possession intoxicating liquor'. Also Ben is having a BBQ, according to Section 3 Subsection J 'No person can make a fire'. Continuity: When Ben and Lindsey are having their BBQ in the park, Ben is holding his cup in his right hand. Change angle on shot, and he is gesturing with his right hand, now empty. Change angle, it's back again. Fact errors: When Ben asks Lindsey to opening day, his ticket says Tuedsay April 11. April 11 was a SUNDAY in 2004. Also, opening day was not on a Tuesday, it was on a Friday. Fact errors: Boston didn't play Texas at their home opener, the played Toronto. Fact errors: When Ben goes to his first game, during batting practice they show the second baseman wearing number 14. In 1980 number 14 belonged to Jim Rice . Jim Rice is black, the second baseman is white. Continuity: When Lindsey goes to Ben's apartment after returning from her parent's house, they go into his bedroom where Ben gives her the Red Sox jacket. In first few shots of her wearing it, the American flag is visible on the front of her right shoulder. However, for the rest of the scene, the flag is not visible at all. Continuity: While they eat their first meal together, when Ben is taking a message on Lindsey's cell phone ("this is Ben her house boy/sex slave... call your mother") Lindsey's hands change places from under her chin to her lap between camera angle changes. Fact errors: During game 4 of the ALCS, the stadium announcer can be heard to introduce John Olerud. However in reality Olerud injured his foot in the previous game and missed the remainder of the series. Fact errors: In the scene where it is revealed that the Yankees officially clinch the division, the "F" indicating the final score goes up from inside the hand operated scoreboard while an inning is in progress. At Fenway Park, the out of town scores are changed between innings from the outside and only between innings. Continuity: When Lindsey is talking to her mom at her parents house the plate of cookies only has 4 cookies then when it goes back to her mom the cookie plate is full when Lindsey takes a handful before she goes in and sits with her dad. Continuity: When Lindsey is running across the field she throws her purse at a security member. Seconds later she runs around Johnny Damon and her purse is back in her hands for the rest of the scene. Revealing mistakes: Blocking tape is visible in the shot with Ben doing the worm at the birthday party. Revealing mistakes: In the Opening Day scene when they're getting into their seats, look at the upper right hand part of the screen and you'll see the dummies they're using to act as seat fillers. Continuity: When Lindsey gets to her seat, at the game in which Ben is selling his tickets, Johnny Damon is clearly in center field, as it is the top of the 9th, and the Red Sox are on defense. However, when she looks through the binoculars, the first base coach is from the Red Sox, and the first baseman is a member of the Yankees, meaning the Yankees were playing defense, and the Red Sox were batting. GEOG: The narrator says that at Ben's first game at Fenway Park in 1980, Dwight Evans hit two home runs. Evans did have a two-homer game in 1980, but in Minnesota, not Boston. GEOG: Lindsay's office is first shown to be in the John Hancock Tower (big blue glass building), but towards the end of the film it's shown to be in the Prudential Tower (which has "GO SOX" lit up in the windows). FAIR: When Lindsey is looking through the binoculars, she appears to look through them backwards, with the smaller "eyepiece" facing outward. She is actually looking through them correctly. The particular binoculars are a compact style that uses a reverse Porro prism design, which allows the objective (outward) lenses to be closer together. When she has them in her hand, you can see rubber eye cups on the end she holds to her face. |

Ben: Bucky Friggin' Dent! Ryan: You love the Red Sox, but have they ever loved you back? Ben: Who do you think you are, Dr. Phil? Go on, get outta here! Ben: Yeah, she's great. Definitely the best girlfriend I've had. The sex was... [stops because of Ryan] Ryan: Okay, Mr. Wrightman, I gotta bat but let me leave you with this advice - you love the sox but have they ever loved you back? Ben: What are you? Dr. Phil? Get outta here go... go swing the bat. Lindsey Meeks: [the Yankee Red Sox game is on] No, it's the game! [holding Ben's ears] Ben: No, I'm fine. It's just a game. Ben: So let's start the interrogation. Molly: No, No, it's not like that. Ian: [finishes his drink and hands it to Ben] Here, for the urine test. Ben: Aw, really? I wish you would have told me I just wizzed in your bushes. Lindsey Meeks: So you don't have a cell phone, a pager, a blackberry nothing? What if some sudden crisis occurs like your father has a heart attack or something? Ben: My father died two years ago. Lindsey Meeks: Oh, I'm sorry. Ben: No, actually I just found out this morning so it's been a rough 24 hours. You know, maybe I should get a cell phone. Lindsey Meeks: [laughs] You're funny, Ben... Ben: Wrightman. Ben: You forgot my last name, didn't you? Lindsey Meeks: No, I just... blanked. Ben: No, I bet when you talk to your friends you call me Ben the School Teacher. Lindsey Meeks: If you love me enough to sell your tickets, I love you enough not to let you. Reporter at Spring Training: Where do the Sox rank in terms of importance in your life? Ben: I say the Red Sox... sex... and breathing. Lindsey Meeks: I saw you on ESPN. Ben: Yeah, we looked like morons, didn't we? Lindsey Meeks: Yah, yah, totally. Well, not you so much. Ben: Well, it was Florida. It was hot. Ben: That's not Yankee dancing - that's Devil Rays dancin'! Robin: He's offering Ben $125,000 for his Red Sox tickets. Sarah: Are you really that rich? Robin: Yes. Sarah: Then why don't you dress better? Lindsey Meeks: You don't see us tangled up in the sheets with the Eiffel Tower in the background. You see the Mariners are coming in, and Pedro's pitching Friday. Ben: No, on Saturday. Schilling's Friday. Lindsey Meeks: I'm going to Paris, and I'm taking vous! Ben: Moi? Lindsey Meeks: Oui! Ben: You're gonna get arrested. Lindsey Meeks: You can't sell your tickets! Ben: That's why you ran across the whole field?... Wait, you've got to tell me - was it spongy? Lindsey Meeks: Wow, you have quite a little group here. Ben: Well, it's my summer family. Ben: [hands shaking] This is odd it never happened before. Al: You're havin' a stroke. Good! Ben: [while helping sick Lindsay into her pajamas] I won't look - I promise. [pause] Okay, I looked. Stephen King: Hey Ump, get off your knees. You're blowing the game! Lindsey Meeks: At what point do you say to yourself, "I'm counting on you to be the one, and I have no fall back plan."? Ben: ...you do this thing... it's so cute I wanna kill myself. [repeated line] Al: Al Waterman, have a sponge. Ben: [to his friends on megaphone] Quick break, everybody. There's some nice Pakistani cold cuts there, courtesy of Mrs. Segal. Ben: You know what's really great about baseball? Lindsey Meeks: Hmm? Ben: You can't fake it. You know, anything else in life you don't have to be great in - business, music, art - I mean you can get lucky. Lindsey Meeks: Really? Ben: Yeah, you can fool everyone for awhile, you know? It's like - not - not baseball. You can either hit a curveball or you can't. That's the way it works... Lindsey Meeks: Hmm. Ben: You know? Ben: You can have a lucky day, sure, but you can't have a lucky career. It's a little like math. It's orderly. Win or lose, it's fair. It all adds up. It's, like, not as confusing or as ambiguous as, uh... Lindsey Meeks: Life? Ben: Yeah. It's - it's safe. Troy: Why do we inflict this on ourselves? Ben: Why? I'll tell you why, 'cause the Red Sox never let you down. Troy: Huh? Ben: That's right. I mean - why? Because they haven't won a World Series in a century or so? So what? They're here. Every April, they're here. At 1:05 or at 7:05, there is a game. And if it gets rained out, guess what? They make it up to you. Does anyone else in your life do that? The Red Sox don't get divorced. This is a real family. This is the family that's here for you. [first lines] Al: [voice over] Eighty-six years of bangin' our heads against the big green wall, but we finally did it. That part you know. That part everybody knows. But I got a story you don't know. It's about this schoolteacher friend of mine named Ben. [last lines] Al: [voice over] Oh, one more thing. You know that little player to be named later? Ben says if it's a boy, they'll name him Ted Williams Wrightman. If it's a girl, Carla Yastrzemski Wrightman. Let's all pray for a boy. Viv: Johnny Damon, you got the sweetest ass in the league! Sarah: Die, Nazi spin bitch! Lindsey Meeks: Just take a hammer and kill me. Lindsey Meeks: Bertie, no. Bertie don't eat that! Ben: I like being part of something that's bigger than me, than I. It's good for your sould to invest in something you can't control. Lindsey Meeks: You're a romantic. You have a lyrical soul. You can love under the best and worst conditions. |
