DATE: Freddie Mays is shown living in a groovy flat in the Lauderdale Tower of The Barbican in London in the late 60s; however the building was not completed until 1974. DATE: The scene where a man is hanging from the balcony of a large block of flats was filmed on the Heygate estate in London. Work on this estate did not begin until around 1970 and the estate was not complete until 1974. Even then, it would have taken another year or two to populate the estate. There is a similar estate just down the road called the Aylesbury, but that wasn't completed until much later. DATE: In various shots you can see brand new street lamps. These would not have been around in 1968. Continuity: When Gangster 55 is telling Freddy Mays to shoot him and the camera is showing his back you can see the gun that Freddy is holding on the couch. The next shot Freddy Mays puts the gun on the couch and leaves. Continuity: The two actors who play the "gangster" at the two points in his life are 7 inches different in height. When paired with the older versions of the same character later in life, there are few if any scenes when Malcolm McDowell (the shorter actor) is standing beside them. Surprisingly, they did not attempt the old Hollywood box or trench technique. Continuity: Beyond the height differential, the two actors playing "Gangster" have very different eye color. This is especially noticeable, as they continually ask people to "look them in the eye". Fact errors: Exactly an hour into the film, the young Gangster states that he is carrying a "Beretta" on his way to kill Lennie. It is actually a Browning P-35 "Hi-Power," the same weapon he has carried throughout the movie. |

[repeated line] Young Gangster: Look into my eyes. Look into my fucking eyes. [Young Gangster and Roland are at the door] Eddie Miller: Who is it? Young Gangster: It's the big bad wolf. [Young Gangster kicks the door in] Lennie Taylor: [Sarcastically] Come in. Young Gangster: Don't mind if I do Lennie. [Shoots Lennie in the stomach] [last lines] [voiceover] Gangster 55: One day I'll catch up with you. You want a war? I'll give you a fucking war one arm tied behind me back. I'll shoot you - blow you to kingdom come. They'll need a dustpan and brush to scrape you off the walls. Make mincemeat out of ya. Pie and mash, puddles of blood. I'll leave you lying there. Go rot, the lot of you. Calling me a cunt? Young Gangster: Calling me a cunt? You calling me a cunt? You cunt. I'll fucking kick you. I'll kick fuck out of ya. I'll kick you to- fuck you. F... Fuck you! Gangster 55: Rip your face off. I'll fucking... I'll, I'll fucking... burn ya. [scene shifts from apartment to rooftop - voiceover continues] Gangster 55: Freddie Mays. Freddie Mays! I don't need ya, Freddie. Who am I? Gangster 55: [shouting out loud] I'm Superman! King fucking Kong! I can pick you up and throw you a million miles. I'm number one. Number fucking one. I'm number one. Number fucking one. Number one! Number one! Number one! [scene flashes back and forth between the rooftop and the night of Lennie's murder] Young Gangster: [screaming] Aaaarrrrhhhh! Gangster 55: Number one! Number one! Number one! One One One One! Number fucking one! I'm number one. Young Gangster: Fuck you! Lennie Taylor: [sound of gunshot] Ahhhh! Oh God! Gangster 55: Number one. [song "The Good Life" begins as scene fades out] [first lines] [song "The Good Life" begins as scene opens at boxing match; crowd noises] Gangster 55: [laughing] What? With Scotland Yard breathing down me neck? Fuck off. Do me a favor! [laughter] Karen: You're not a bad looking bloke. Young Gangster: Bad looking bloke? Darlin'... I'm a prince. Gangster 55: And you, Mr. Freddie Mays, you had to go swimming in her eyes. Dancing in her hair. You had to slip into her mouth, slide over her tongue. Fall down her throat, deep down into her belly. Right into her blood. You had to fall asleep wrapped around her beautiful, beating heart. Eddie Miller: [Young Gangster puts an axe on the table] What's that? Young Gangster: That? That's my favourite axe, Eddie. Gangster 55: What do you take me for, a cunt? |
