| Plot: | In this 1968 film, the Monkees valiantly attempted to deflate their own myth. The plot is, essentially, about demystification. Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, Peter Tork, and Mike Nesmith - with the aid of writer Jack Nicholson (the only credited author due to legalities)- tackle such topics as filmmaking, the media treatment and madness of the Vietnam War, Davy Jones' "way with the ladies", and, most importantly, commercialization. Each group member is presented in a unique light - in every case shattering the image that had been produced by the "media machine". The Monkees went out on a limb with this film by creating an almost surreal work with a loosely bound "plot". Their younger fans, unfortunately, simply missed the point. Because of the poor publicity of the film at the time of its release, older teenagers had no clue what "Head" was trying to say. As a result, its box office showing was disastrous. "Head" is more for the film enthusiast than the casual Monkees fan in some respects. The soundtrack does, however, feature some of the finest and most sophisticated music of the group's career. And yes, they DO play their own instruments on the tunes, but receive assistance in composing and performing from the likes of Neil Young, Stephen Stills, and Carole King. |

Revealing mistakes: As the Black Sheik rides across the desert sand, it's obvious from the already present hoofprints that we're not looking at the first take. Continuity: When Micky, Davy, and Mike are cornered by the man in the cloak, close-ups of Mike flipped - the part in his hair is backwards. Crew: Wires pulling the mermaids and Mickey through the water can be seen at the beginning of the film. Wires are also visible supporting the Monkees before getting sucked into the vacuum, and when falling from the sky into the street at the end of the film. Continuity: Annette Funicello's character is called Theresa by Davy before the boxing sequence, but is listed as Minnie in the end credits. Continuity: When Micky jumps from the bridge at the start of the film, the replacement dummy enters the water head first. In the next shot, when we see the real Micky entering the water as seen from below, he enters feet first. Continuity: When the cop orders The Monkees out of the box, he is wearing sunglasses. The camera angle changes as they climb down, and suddenly the sunglasses are in the cop's hand. Continuity: When the "first" Monkee gets sucked into the vacuum, another is Monkee plainly seen on the "inside" of the vacuum cleaner ahead of him. When the "second" one falls in, there's only one other Monkee. |

All belief possibly could be said to be the result of some conditioning. Thus, the study of history is simply the study of one system of beliefs deposing another, and so on and so on and so on... A psychologically tested belief of our time is that the central nervous system, which feeds it's impulses directly to the brain, the conscious and subconscious, is unable to discern between the real, and the vividly imagined experience. If there is a difference, and most of us believe there is - am I being clear? For to examine these concepts requires tremendous energy and discipline. To allow the unknown to occur and to occur, requires clarity. And where there is clarity there is no choice. And where there is choice, there is misery. But then, why should anyone listen to me? Why should I speak, since I know nothing? Extra: Hows about some more steam? Peter: We were talking with the Master regarding the nature of conceptual reality. Psychologically speaking, the human mind, or brain or whatever, is almost incapable of distinguishing between the real and the vividly imagined experience. Sound and film and music and radio. Even these manipulative experiences are received more or less directly and uninterpretive by the mind. They are cataloged and recorded and either acted upon directly, or stored in the memory, or both. Now this process, unless we pay it tremendous attention, begins to separate us from the reality of the now. Am I being clear? For we must allow the reality of the now to just happen, as it happens. Observe and act with clarity. For where there is clarity, there is no choice. And were there is choice, there is misery. But then, why should I speak, since I know nothing? Mike: Okay. You think they call us plastic now, babe, but wait 'til I get through telling them how we do it. Peter Tork: Let me tell you one thing son. Nobody ever lends money to a man with a sense of humor. The Critic: That song was pretty white. Davy Jones: So am I; what can I tell you? Lord High'N'Low: "Boys, don't never, but never, make fun of no cripple!" Inspector Shrink: The tragedy of *your* time, my young friends, is that you may get exactly what you want. Micky Dolenz: C'mon let's get outta this nightclub! Mrs Ace: But what about the food? Micky Dolenz: That is a particularly inept thing to say, Peter, considering that we are in a vacuum cleaner. Heraldic Messenger: [Peter opens the door to find a heraldic messenger holding a pretty girl on a chain] Oh, oh, dear, I got a wire for a Monkee. Peter: Thank you. Heraldic Messenger: It's a, it was nothing. Peter: Oh, I wouldn't say that. We all have loved ones, you know. [the heraldic messenger cackles as he leads the pretty girl away on her chain] Peter: It's all right, Davy, there's nothing wrong. Davy: Nothing wrong, huh? Peter: That's right, I came here to tell you, man, that everything... Davy: You know what I saw in there? Peter: Yes. Davy: An eye, man, an eye, this big, blood red, it was as clear as the nose on your face, it was looking at me. Peter: Peace, David, I know. Lord High'N'Low: Nobody walks out on me!
