| Plot: | This drama examines the personal, political, and racial dilemmas facing a group of college freshmen as they begin their first semester at Columbus University. Malik is an African-American student attending on a track scholarship; academics are not his strong suit, and he goes in thinking that his athletic abilities will earn him a free ride through college. Fudge, a "professional student" who has been at Columbus for six years so far, becomes friendly with Malik and challenges his views about race and politics in America, while Professor Phipps, a black man who teaches political science, firmly tells Malik that he will not be graded on a different standard either because of his race or his ability to run quickly. With Deja, Malik finds a girlfriend, a tutor, and a training partner all rolled into one. Meanwhile, Kristen, a somewhat naive young woman from California, meets a boy named Billy after both have had too much to drink at a beer blast; Kristen soon becomes a victim of date rape and becomes involved with a campus feminist group to deal with the painful experience. While working with the women's group, Kristen gets to know Taryn, a strong but understanding woman who is also a lesbian, and she finds herself becoming attracted to her. And Remy is a confused young man from Idaho who feels lost in the multi-cultural atmosphere of Columbus. He is approached by Scott, a member of a group of racist skinheads, who believe that Remy is a perfect candidate to help carry out his group's violent goals. |

Continuity: The amount of blood on Deja's face and shirt changes from shot to shot. Fact errors: Remy refers earlier in the movie that it is 1995. The "Peace Fest" that is advertised on the flyers is slated to take place on Saturday, November 15. For it to be a Saturday and be on November 15 it would either have to be 1986 or 1997. Continuity: The position of the frozen broccoli that Malik uses to "ice" his face with changes between shots. Miscellaneous: Immediately after the red Volkswagen beetle is flipped and the three girls are walking along the sidewalk, it is raining in the background but not on the girls. Revealing mistakes: Immediately after Malik leaves Prof. Phipps' office for the last time in the movie, the camera pans in on a plaque that reads "Columbus University: propter aurum quod autulerunt et propter sanguis quiem effuderunt." Apparently Columbus University's classics department doesn't live up to Columbus University's reputation as one of the nation's premier institutions of higher learning. The plaque is supposed to read, "Columbus University: propter aurum quod abstulerunt et propter sanguinem qui effudit." ("Columbus University: because of the gold that they have taken away and because of the blood that has flowed.") PLOT: Though Jennifer Connelly's character is central in the film, she is never shown or mentioned again after being seen running during the sniper attack. Continuity: When Remy confronts Malik, by the statue, about Malik's black panther shirt and calls him a coon. Malik makes threats and Remy runs off. In the next scene Malik confronts Remy at his dorm room Malik states that Remy has been good about not saying anything to him. |

[after Malik referred to him as a "sell-out"] Professor Phipps: So, Mr. Williams thinks I am an Uncle Tom, hmmm? Well, well, well. What does that have to do with your ability to place a comma in its proper place or put a period at the end of a sentence, hmmm? Professor Phipps: Your own presence should be motivation enough. Malik: As a black man in America, my stress comes from everywhere. Recognize. Take a look around you. Look at this, Columbus, it disgusts me. Fool wasn't nothin' but a thief, mass murder. He done slaughtered millions of native Americans, and we done got a holiday and university named after his honor. Professor Phipps: One's primary purpose at university level is to learn how to think. Professor Phipps: Without struggle, there is no progress. (quoting Frederick Douglas) Taryn: We need to get past just complaining about university security. You know? I'm tired of hearing women cry for someone else to save them. Think what that means. Why do you need someone else to save you? Think about saving yourself. Kristen Connor: Look, um... why don't I stay with you tonight? We could stay up and talk... Taryn: Are you sure you're ready for that? Don't do it, just cause your fascinated. I want you to be sure. [Malik confronts Remy at the door of his room] Malik Williams: Remy is it? Man, I gotta admit you've been really polite by staying out of my way. But you ain't been honest. See I figure, it's not what a person says it's what they think. So in my mind, you've been walking around here calling me a nigger in you head. Am I right? Remy: I got nothing to say to you man. [Remy tries to close the door, Malik forces it open] Malik Williams: Oh, I think you do! You want to say what you feel don't you? You think I'm a nigger? You be a man and call me one to my face! [after a few moments of silence, Malik psyches Remy out] Malik Williams: I thought so. You're just a punk-ass white boy... with a fucked-up haircut. Bitch. Fudge: [Referring to the Frederick Douglass book Malik is borrowing] Read it for yourself, and not for some damn class. Remy: How would you feel if I came in your room and I started playing my music. Fudge: I wouldn't feel nothing. 'Cause it'd never happen. Remy: Why not? Fudge: 'Cause I'll whoop your ass. That's why. [Remy is holding his roommate and Malik at gunpoint] Remy: Fuck all you damn Jews and Niggers! You stick together, don't you! You stick together to work against ME, the Pure White Christian Man! Don't you know he controls you, nigger? You're nothing without him. You're NOTHING! You're NOTHING! You're a SLAVE! I'll fucking take off my ficking belt, man, and I'll make you my fucking MONKEY! Remy: [to David] Get on the floor. David Isaacs: Remy, please. Remy: ON THE FLOOR! You're not white! You're Jewish! You're NOTHING! You're not me. I'm the man! I'm the man! Remy: [to Malik] Dirty Nigger! What do you have to say now! [cocks the gun] I ain't playin' with you. What do you have to say now! Huh! Mr. Fucking Hot Shot APE! You're NOTHING! Mal-lick! You're NOTHING! [Remy starts packing while still holding the gun] Remy: Don't move, fucker. [Remy finishes packing] Remy: You're gonna die. That's right, you're gonna die. You're ALL gonna die. You're gonna DIE, MONKEY! [Malik confronts Remy after Remy shoots DÈja] Remy: This is MY world! This is MY country! This is MY WORLD! You're nothing but a monkey. Look at me! I'm the man! I'm the man! You're NOTHING! You can't hurt me. Malik Williams: FUCK YOU! [Malik grabs Remy by the throat and starts choking him to death] Malik Williams: God, I fucking HATE you! You're gonna DIE! You DEAD! You're gonna DIE! [Malik continues to choke Remy until Campus Security forces him off] James: No. This means white power! Scott Moss: Hey, um, listen. Me and some of my buddies over there are gonna go down to his bar down on corner for a drink. You wanna come along? Remy: Huh? Scott Moss: I said me and my buddies are going to get a drink. Do you want to come along? Remy: What are you? Some kind of queer? Scott Moss: What? Remy: [pushes Scott] I should kick your ass! Making the moves on me. Scott Moss: First, don't ever touch me again. Because I will beat you to the fucking ground, boy! Second, I ain't no faggot. I just wanted to know if you wannted to come get a drink with me and my friends. That's all. Professor Phipps: Those persons whose names were called, and whom are standing, the university has instructed me to inform you that your financial bill as of yet has not been paid. You may leave and settle your debts. However, you may not return to this course until you have done so. There are "no" handouts in the free world. And appropriately, none in my course. Thank you, and good day. [repeated line] Professor Phipps: Peppermint? |
