| Plot: | Three friends on losing streaks: Adam, whose girlfriend dumped him, Nick, with a dead-end job and a cheating wife, and Lou, a suicidal alcoholic. To help Lou recover from car-exhaust poisoning, Adam and Nick, with Adam's nephew Jacob, go to a winter resort that was their old party place. It's now a dump, but the lads rally for a night of drinking in the hot tub. Somehow, the hot tub takes them back to 1986, on a fateful night for each of them. Maybe if they do everything the same way they did that night, they'll get back to the future so Jacob can be born. There are serious temptations to do things differently. Will they make it back to their sorry lives? And what about Jacob? |

DATE: SPOILER: After traveling back in time to 1986, Lou wagers on the 1986 AFC Championship Game while it's being shown live at the bar. But this game was actually played on January 11, 1987. CHAR: When the time travelers return to 1986, they discuss doing everything the same so as not to mess anything up in the future. One person says "If you step on a bug, the Internet won't be invented." The internet was already invented in 1986, but not widely known or used in public homes. DATE: When Adam is writing poetry in the room after the breakup, he is listening to "I Just Died In Your Arms tonight" by the Cutting Crew. This song wasn't released in the U.S. until the spring of 1987. DATE: You can clearly see a poster for Rambo III (1988) on the wall of Blaine's bedroom. Rambo III wasn't released until 1988. They travel back to 1986. Continuity: At the Poison concert it switches between overhead shots of John Cusack being led through the crowd, and ones of him standing by the bar. DATE: SPOILER: Most of the movie's anachronisms have to do with the setting being too early, but here's one that's wrong because the 1986 setting is too late. If Lou stayed in 1986, he couldn't have joined Mötley Crüe in time to record "Home Sweet Home" with them and appear in its video; that track was on the band's 1985 album Theater of Pain and in heavy rotation on MTV by the start of 1986, with Vince Neil singing. DATE: The movie's central conceit, a Poison concert, is an anachronism: Even if the movie takes place in November-December 1986, no American teenager would have cared about the band. Their Look What the Cat Dragged In album was at that point just a few months old and hadn't produced any chart hits (first single "Talk Dirty to Me" didn't chart until March 1987). If the movie takes place in January-February 1986, then the album and its signature hit (performed in the movie) wouldn't have existed at all. DATE: The song "Smooth Up In Ya" by the BulletBoys plays during the scene in 1986 when Nick's band is preparing for their show; that song was first released in 1988. Continuity: When arguing in the hotel room, Lou goes from sitting in his underwear to having on sweatpants. Revealing mistakes: At the start of the film when Jacob Can be seen playing a PC game for about two seconds you can clearly see the Windows Media Player 11 "play" buttons as they come up when a video is full screen and has the mouse over it. Continuity: The top button on Nick Webber's pajamas switches between being buttoned and unbuttoned in several shots. Continuity: When they are playing "quarters" in their room at the hotel (in the present), the number of drinks on the table change. Continuity: When Lou is in the hospital and the decision is made to go to Kodiak Valley, he pulls out his catheter. Liquid sprays onto his pillow and it is clearly damp. In the very next shot the pillow is completely dry. DATE: The movie is set in early 1986, yet one of the anti-communist 'jocks' at the ski resort makes reference to 21 Jump Street, a show that didn't begin airing until 1987. DATE: The version of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle" that is played during a scene is in fact a re-recording that was first released in 1987, a year after the film is set. Continuity: After Adam is stabbed in the eye by his girlfriend, he has a nasty wound. In later scenes the wound is missing. PLOT: It is stated at the beginning of the movie that Jacob is 20. Since he was conceived in 1986, that would put "present time" at 2006 or 2007. However, the hot tub is clearly set to "2010" when the guys return to the present. Revealing mistakes: Towards the end of the movie as the three guys are talking to Phil and he is handing them the map printout from Lougle, you can see two search options underneath the address search bar and the option for "Search the Web" is checked instead of "Search the Maps" option. DATE: When Nick is in the tub with Tara, the song "Push It", by Salt-N-Pepa is played. The movie takes place in 1986, but the song was released a year later on March 9, 1987. Fact errors: The AFC Championship game played on 11 January 1987 shown in the bar was between the Denver and Cleveland. However, the game took place in Cleveland rather than Denver as shown. Revealing mistakes: The 1987 AFC Championship Game was the early game with a kickoff time of 12 p.m. Eastern Time. In the movie the game was on at night. Miscellaneous: As the four guys enter Kodiac Valley talking about Adam ('John Cusack' (qv)) breaking up with the "great white buffalo", in the rear window they start to pass an awning as the scene changes inside the Denali then goes back to looking out the rear you see them start to pass the same awning again. Continuity: In the scene where the guys encounter the ski patrol for the first time. Jacob is pushed down and the Ski patrolman's hand radio clearly falls in the snow. In the next shot it's back in his chest pocket. FAIR: Lou is seen betting on Denver against Cleveland in the 1986 AFC Championship Game. While the actual Broncos-Browns game did take place in January 1987, it could be reasonably referred to as the 1986 conference championship because it followed the 1986 regular season (for example, even though they won Super Bowl XX in January 1986, the champions of that year are always called the "1985 Chicago Bears"). |

Jacob: [from trailer] Do I really gotta be the asshole who says we got in this thing and went back in time? Blaine: America! Lou: Outta my way stool Jacob: I've dated a lot of girls, hot ones. Lou: You've dated a lot of guys, gay ones. Lou: [to Jacob, while Lou is shocked that the former does not have ritalin] Don't fuckin' lie to me, every one of you people have ritalin. Jacob: [to Lou] I have some adavain but it's different. Lou: Well, let's stick it up our asses! Jacob: It's not a suppository! Lou: It doesn't matter. You crush it up, put it in a paper towel, run it under some warm water, and you stick it right up your ass. That works! Lou: I wanna fuck something! Jacob: [Refferring to Lou] Do you remember when I was 12 and he tried to bite me. Adam: Yeah, but you had that coming. Nick, Lou, Adam: [Repeated line, whispered] Great White Buffalo. Lou: It's called male bonding okay. Haven't you even seen 'Wild Hogs'? Jacob: [about Blaine] Hey look, it's the douchbag from Karate Kid 3. Adam: One little change has a ripple effect and it effects everything else. Like a butterfly floats its wings and Tokyo explodes or there's a tsunami, in like, you know, somewhere. Jacob: Yes exactly. You step on the bug and the fucking internet is never invented. Lou: Oh then you'll have to talk to girls with your mouth. Jacob: Yeah. No. I was more concerned about bigger consequences like not being born. Lou: Yeah. No. I don't care about that. Lou: It's the fucking 80's guys. Let's do what we want to do. Free Love! Jacob: That was the 60's dipshit. Adam: We had like Reagan and AIDS. Get the fuck outta here, okay. Do the right thing, Violator! Lou: God. Relax. It's like you've haven't seen a little cum on your friends face before. Jacob: I'm kinda right in the middle of a thing right now, but can I text you later? Girl at Club: Can you what? Jacob: Are you online at all? Girl at Club: I have no idea what you're talking about. Jacob: How do I get a hold of you? Girl at Club: You come find me. Jacob: That sounds... exhausting. Lou: Okay lay down. We got a stupid baby to make. Lou: [Trying to disclaim rumors of his impotence] Oh God! I'm gonna cum! Shia Lebeouf! I'm fucking Adam's sister! Dropping loads! So much fucking semen. Little Tiny Jacobs! Adam: [to Lou] You are the patron saint of the totally fucked. You're completely toxic. There's nothing you can't kill. You're the fucking Violator! Lou: Here's a question. Was it morally wrong for me to exploit my knowledge of the future for personal financial gain? Perhaps. Here's another question. Do I give a fuck? April: What happened to your... Adam: I got stabbed in the face with a fork, I saw it coming, I avoided it, I didn't avoid it, it happened to me in a different way. Jacob: [ To Lou] I knew I hated you for a reason, I'm gonna tell everyone in prison I went back in time to kill my own father! Lou: [to Adam and Nick] Oh, man, what the fuck's he doing here? Jacob: Nice to see you too, Lou. Jacob: [mimicking] Nice to see you too, Lou. Fuck you, Jacob! You suck and you know it! You just ruined my fucking weekend. Adam: Why don't you do something out of the house this weekend? Jacob: What should I do out of the house this weekend Uncle Adam? Adam: Something in the course of reality, get a job, go to college. Jacob: That all sounds overrated. Nick: [Nick is having sex with Tara in the bathtub in order to keep the events of the past unchanged. Nick is crying about cheating on his wife] Courtney. Tara: Tara. Nick: Courtney. Tara: Tara. Nick: Courtney. Tara: No seriously my name is Tara. Nick: Not you, my wife. Tara: You're married? Nick: No, not yet, she's nine. Adam: Why do you waste your time with that second-life bullshit? Look at you. You're still in jail. You were in jail last week. Jacob: Yeah, I'm a prisoner. It's called "doing hard time". Adam: Can't you be like a warrior or shaman or orc or some shit like that? Lou: [On his knees] Oh, wow, good for you. Nick: [Eyes closed, crying] I know, right? Lou: It's like Gary Coleman's fucking forearm. It's so black, so impossibly black. Oh God, I love you buddy. Nick: Don't say that! Lou: I'm sorry, I do! Lou: Why don't you shut your slut mouth, and mind your own fucking business? Nick: Excuse me Miss, what color is Michael Jackson? Girl At Bar: ...black? Nick: AAHHH! Nick: It must be some kind of hot tub time machine... [deadpans into camera] Lou: Every young man's fantasy is to have a three-way. Jacob: Yeah not with another fucking guy! Lou: It's still a three-way! Repairman: Maybe what you need isn't in here. Maybe what you need, has been in here all along. Jacob: Is that why you have that shoebox in your closet, marked "Cincinatti" ? |
