Plot: Labor racketeer Carmine Ricca is acquitted of a multiple murder on a technicality, but after leaving the courthouse amid a sea of reporters and a mob of angry demonstrators, he is driven away - and some time later that day is found shot to death with his driver, lawyer, and a bodyguard. Inspector Harry Callahan and his new partner Earlington "Early" Smith drive by but are asked to leave by Callahan's boss Lt. Neil Briggs, who had Harry and Early transferred out of Homicide to Stakeout because he despises Harry's methods. Another mob figure is gunned down in his pool with a large gathering of guests, but it not until the killing of a known pimp - and after Harry has foiled a plane hijacking and liquor store holdup - that Harry and Early are reassigned to Homicide to head the investigation of these killings. Harry soon clashes with Briggs over the police's primary suspect, Frank Palancio - a clash that becomes hotter when a Palancio associate and a uniformed traffic officer are shot to death, and a subsequent raid on Palancio explodes in a firefight - a raid that Harry finds was a setup by the real killers.

Goofs

Continuity: When Callahan is in the car with Lieutenant Briggs after they pick up the bomb they drive by the 76 service station three times in about 30 seconds.
Continuity: In the car with Callahan, after picking up the bomb, Briggs puts his glasses on twice.
SYNC: After Harry discovers that there's a bomb in his mailbox, he goes upstairs to his room and pulls out his Smith & Wesson. He then puts it on top of his chest of drawers and searches for a screwdriver. Finding the screwdriver, he picks up his gun to leave, and puts his thumb on the hammer. The sound of a Model 29 uncocking is heard, but Harry doesn't actually uncock it because it was never cocked.
Crew: After Callahan removes the bomb from his own mailbox, he looks up at a man on the nearby stairs. As a car drives by on the street, the lights from it cast the shadow of the boom operator onto the wall.
Crew: Reflected in the glass in the shooting practice room.
Crew: Reflected in the mirrored sunglasses.
Revealing mistakes: A metal ramp is seen bolted to the front bumper of the 1972 Ford Galaxie sedan (Lt. Briggs' unmarked unit) when it rams Officer Grimes' motorcycle head on.
Continuity: The condition of the rear door on the Ford sedan when Harry makes a U-turn. The door is damaged when Harry sideswipes a stack of railroad ties, and Lt. Briggs falls out of the car.
Crew: Reflected in J.J. Wilson's car after he is shot.
Continuity: When the prostitute is picked up by the cab, the exterior shots of the car are of 1963 Chevrolet. When the interior shots are seen, the car is actually a 1972 Ford with the seat from the 63 Chevy installed that are of the same interior color.
Continuity: When Callahan jumps onto the hood of Palancio's car after the police raid, he is facing the rear of the car, grabbing the hood near the windshield. A few seconds later, he is seen sprawled across the hood, facing the front of the car, and then seconds later he is back in his original position.
Continuity: When the pimp is driving across the Golden Gate bridge, he looks into his rear view mirror to check out the motorcycle cop following him. Cars that appear around the cop in the mirror are different than the cars around the cop in the non-mirror shot. (A small, red foreign car is visible in the mirror. When the shot immediately returns to normal, the red car is not there).
Crew: When Sweet shoots the pimp, you can see the reflection of the cameraman in Sweet's sunglasses.
Continuity: When the pimp is being followed on the Golden Gate Bridge by one of the motorcycle cops, the shot starts near the center span but in the next couple of shots, they are at the beginning of the bridge.
Continuity: The motorcycles used by the vigilantes in the final chase are Guzzi model 850 T3 California. However after entering the aircraft carrier they turn into Triumph T120 Bonneville.
Continuity: In the pool scene, the bullet wound of the girl shot in the center of the chest disappears when she is floating in the pool.
Revealing mistakes: During the final car chase, there are multiple sets of skid marks on the winding road from previous takes.
Continuity: When the officer shoots the pimp he fires only five shots. When they examine the car we see six strings representing the bullet paths.
Continuity: When Harry is being chased down the steep winding street he hits a car with the driver's side of his car. In one subsequent shot, the damage is shown to the passenger side instead.
Continuity: Harry Callahan's surname is misspelled as "Calahan" in the closing credits.
Revealing mistakes: Instead of damage from a shotgun blast, the door to Palancio's office features a neatly drilled round hole and evidence of the adhesive tape that had previously concealed the effects pyrotechnic.
Fact errors: When Davis kills the Mob Boss in his apartment and kills McCoy in the garage, he can be seen putting a silencer on his .357 revolver. Once the silencer is attached, the shots he fires are very quiet. It is impossible to silence a revolver as most of the sound would still escape from the gap that is always present between the barrel and the cylinder.
Continuity: When the cop pulls over the mob's limo, he parks his motorcycle parallel to the vehicle, but in the next shot it is parked perpendicular the limo.
Crew: Crew member is seen moving around after the swimming pool massacre.
Revealing mistakes: During Davis' combat pistol round, we see him shoot a stand-up target from the target's perspective. He fires twice, but we see a second bullet hole pop out before the second shot is fired for a total of three holes from only two bullets.
Continuity: In the first appearance of a vigilante cop, his pistol holster is sometimes on his right side and sometimes on his left side.
Continuity: Near the end of the movie when the back windshield is shot out, the bullet passes close to Callahan in the front seat. Yet later when Briggs is driving away, the bullet hole is close to the passenger side of the car.
Continuity: In the scene where the vigilante cops come to arrest the mob boss at the warehouse, one of the cops stands to the right side of the door facing sideways and knocks. When the mob boss fires the shotgun through the door, the cop is standing directly in front of and facing the door and gets hit square in the chest.
Continuity: During the hijacking sequence, Insp. Callahan is eating a hamburger at San Francisco International airport. When he walks out of the terminal to board the hijacked plane, he's at the Oakland International Airport across the bay.
Fact errors: During the chase scene with the officers on motorcycles, the motor cycles had no windshields. For police officers, it is mandatory for their motorcycles to have windshields. They probably omitted the windshields for stunt drivers.
CHAR: When Harry walks up to the limousine in which Ricca and his men have been murdered, he puts his hands on the car's door sill and partially rolled-down window, contaminating an active crime scene which is still under investigation. No veteran homicide detective would do this.
Continuity: In the scene where Ricca and his men are killed in the car, when the police officer shoots the front seat passenger in the head, blood spatters on the window because it is rolled all the way up. When Harry walks up to the car to view the crime scene the window is rolled all the way down and the dead man's head is resting on it.
Crew: Just before the car explodes with the time bomb Callahan put in there, you can clearly see wires at the rear of the car.
DATE: Just after Harry gets word there's trouble in the airport, we hear a female voice over the public address system: "American Airlines Flight 557, Electra II Flagship, nonstop for Washington, now boarding at Gate 5." American Airlines stopped using Electra IIs in 1969. In fact, the full-size Lockheed Electra II turboprop had virtually disappeared from all U.S. airlines by the time of "Magnum Force."
Revealing mistakes: When Ricca gives his statement to the press, he is surrounded by reporters on the court steps. A reporter holds up a tape recorder with no tape in it.
SYNC: When Harry is killing the hijackers on the plane, he has left his .44 magnum behind to disguise himself as a pilot, and is using a smaller revolver, probably a .38, but when he shoots, the gun makes the loud characteristic .44 magnum report.
Revealing mistakes: During the "try knocking on the door" dialogue, a trolley can be seen passing by on the street outside. One of the trolley patrons waves directly at the camera, obviously aware that a film was being shot.
Continuity: SPOILER: Callaghan visits the forensics lab after the pimp is shot in the pink car. The bullets traces (strings) are all aimed in to an individual lying on the passenger seat and come from a variety of angles. Yet he was shot from a single angle from outside the car whilst in the driver seat.
Continuity: The Sovereign Airways plane when moving down the runway with the front-on shot, has one engine under each wing, when the plane comes to a halt, after "Captain" Harry applies the brakes, there is another partial front-on shot of the right-hand wing, and there are two engines quite visible under the wing!
Continuity: In the pool scene, after the bomb has exploded and the rookie cop has finished firing his machine gun, you can clearly see a man at the far left of the picture still standing up.
CHAR: In the opening scene of Ricca leaving the courthouse, just after the man yells at the TV Reporter "Fuck the courts!" there is a quick crowd shot before a shot of Ricca trying to muscle his way to his car. In that quick moment, there someone holding a sign that is meant to say "UP YOURS RICCA" but contains a grammatical error as it actually reads "UP YOUR RICCA".
Continuity: In the chase with Harry and Briggs, Harry's car passes the same Austin 1300, parked on the left, twice.
Revealing mistakes: Obvious dummy for the girl when one of the officers shoot her and falls out the hotel window.
Continuity: When motorcycle stops behind pimp's car, he and his motorcycle are partially in shadow, yet moments later the cop and his motorcycle are in complete sunshine. Bridge shadow is also inconsistent in earlier and subsequent shots.
Revealing mistakes: Prior to the pimp shooting, a circular discoloration is visible on the actor's neck, exactly where he is about to be shot.
Crew: While Harry and his partner are following Palancio (and ask for directions to San Quentin), the four lights mounted on their vehicle are visible in Harry's sunglasses. Also the shadow of the camera mounted on the side of their vehicle repeatedly comes in and out of view as the car turns.
Crew: In the scene where Harry is running up the ramp to enter the aircraft carrier, in the long shot of him running up you can see a camera and crew man in a white hat below just above the wood wall.
PLOT: The bomb in the mailbox was designed to explode when the mailbox was opened; however, for some reason there's a stopwatch attached to it.
Continuity: During the grocery store holdup, Harry is pointing his .44 at the perp with the shotgun through the one-way glass behind the counter, and a store clerk is directly in the way, between Harry and the shotgun perp. Seconds later, Harry fires at the perp through the glass - the very next shot shows the same view through the glass as before, with the perp hit by Harry's shot, but the store clerk has disappeared entirely.
Crew: During the shootout at Palancio's hideout, a gangmember attempts to escape in a Ford sedan - Harry fires a shot at the driver and the car crashes into the office building/hideout. Just before the car crashes through the wall, a large object can be seen in the back seat, covered with a black cloth, which is the camera for the POV shot as the car smashes through the wall.

Quotes

Harry Callahan: [about Briggs] A man's got to know his limitations.
Prostitute: [to the cabdriver] Too bad you're not on welfare, I'd
give you a freebie.
Harry Callahan: You know those guys?
Early Smith: They came through the Academy after me. They stick
together like flypaper, you know? Everybody thought they were queer
for each other.
Harry Callahan: Tell you something. If the rest of you could shoot
like them, I wouldn't care if the whole damn department was queer.
Harry Callahan: Couldn't of happened to a nicer bunch of guys.
[Harry is confronted by three of the vigilante cops]
Harry Callahan: You heroes killed a dozen people this week. What are
you going to do next week?
Officer Davis: Kill a dozen more.
Lieutenant Briggs: Suppose they panic and start shooting?
Harry Callahan: Nothing wrong with shooting as long as the right
people get shot!
Lieutenant Briggs: You're on loan to Stakeout, Callahan.
Harry Callahan: That's right, Lieutenant! You saw to that.
Harry Callahan: Well, I just work for the city, Briggs!
Lieutenant Briggs: So do I, longer than you, and I never had to take
my gun out of its holster once. I'm proud of that.
Harry Callahan: Well, you're a good man, lieutenant. A good man
always knows his limitations...
Pilot: Excuse me, Captain. This may seem silly but can you fly?
Harry Callahan: Nope. Never had a lesson.
Harry Callahan: [shows boss suspect's bullet]
Lieutenant Briggs: [seeing it through microscope] Close, but no
match. It has much more lines than the other. Where'd get it from,
by the way?
Harry Callahan: Oh, just some hunch.
Lieutenant Briggs: Tell me where.
Harry Callahan: Look, it doesn't matter because it doesn't match up,
so there is no reason for me to tell you.
Lieutenant Briggs: Don't play any crap games with me.
Infirmary Doctor: [stitching up Harry's head] Sure you don't want a
local for this, Harry? Takes about seven stitches.
Harry Callahan: No, thanks.
Infirmary Doctor: Ok, it's your ass...
Harry Callahan: My head, the cut's on my head.
Infirmary Doctor: Why does everybody suddenly become a comedian in
here?
Lieutenant Briggs: [comes in with Captain Avery] Does he have to stay
in here?
Infirmary Doctor: No, I could stop and let the man's brains run out
all over his shoes.
Captain Avery: Rogers, I don't need to have a doctor display that
kind of attitude. A police officer is dead.
Infirmary Doctor: Sorry.
Lieutenant Briggs: I got those warrants for a search of the premises,
Callahan, not for you to become judge, jury and executioner. It was
supposed to be a simple arrest.
Harry Callahan: Well arresting a killer like Palancio isn't always
simple.
Lieutenant Briggs: People are guilty until proven... I mean...
goddamnit, you know what I mean. This city is on the verge of the
worst criminal violence in it's history, and you have to start full
scale military operations.
Harry Callahan: I didn't start shooting at anyone that didn't start
shooting at me first.
Captain Avery: Every time you pull out that gun, my paperwork backs
up for three goddamn months! The chief and I have already conferred
on this matter, Callahan - a full investigation is warranted here.
[turns and leaves]
Lieutenant Briggs: [nodding repeatedly, obviously upset] What about a
dead cop? I warned you against taking them.
Harry Callahan: Sweet was killed with the first shot. Besides, they
were tipped off. They knew we were coming, Briggs.
Lieutenant Briggs: How? Don't hand me that crap.
Harry Callahan: I'm telling you, they knew we were coming. After 200
arrests, I know the difference!
Lieutenant Briggs: If I have my way, Callahan, you won't make another
arrest as long as you live.
Harry Callahan: [contemptous] Is that all, lieutenant?
Lieutenant Briggs: No, that's not all. I want that slug you showed
me.
Harry Callahan: I ran that through ballistics, it was nothing, the
rifling was totally different.
Lieutenant Briggs: It's still state's evidence, I want it anyway.
Harry Callahan: [takes it out and throws it at Briggs] Eat it! [the
bullet hits Briggs in the chest and drops to the floor]
[Briggs bends down to get it and then slowly gets back up glaring at
Harry]
Neighbor: [seeing Harry take apart a mailbox] Hey, what's going on
down here?
Harry Callahan: Taking apart the mailbox, what does it look like?
Neighbor: Well you people live here, right? What the hell are you
doing to the mailbox, did you lose your key?
Harry Callahan: Why don't you mind your own goddamn business?
Neighbor: Ummm. That's my mailbox too, now. Don't you get smart with
me!
[after a moment]
Neighbor: Tampering with the mail's a federal offense. I'm calling
the police.
[starts to head upstairs to do so]
Harry Callahan: I am the police.
Neighbor: [comes back down] What?... oh. The cop who lives upstairs?
Neighbor: [Harry has the mailbox open now and finds a miniature bomb
inside, with a red light lit up on it. He takes it out and clicks a
button causing the red light to go out] What's that?
Harry Callahan: Plastic explosive.
Neighbor: [quavering voice] A bomb?
Harry Callahan: Yeah, that's right. If you'd bothered me any more,
we'd all be stuck to the ceiling now. Here... would you like to
hold it?
Neighbor: No no, I don't want to get involved!
[runs upstairs]
[someone knocks on Harry's door]
Harry Callahan: Who is it?
[no answer and there's another knock]
Harry Callahan: [takes gun out and aims it at door] Come on in.
Lieutenant Briggs: [enters] I don't like looking down one of those.
[Harry reholsters his gun]
Lieutenant Briggs: Make a right here... Get on freeway.
Harry Callahan: The freeway? You find a new route to City Hall,
Briggs?
Lieutenant Briggs: [puts his glasses away and takes his gun out and
points it at Callahan]
Harry Callahan: [seeing the gun pointed at him] Your gun is out of
it's holster. First TIME Briggs?
Lieutenant Briggs: You know you're not going to City Hall Callahan.
The only place you going anywhere is in a rubber bag.
Lieutenant Briggs: [with gun pointed] Just hold it right there,
Callahan. No tricks.
Harry Callahan: Your organization is through Briggs.
Lieutenant Briggs: [nods slyly] There's a lot more where they came
from. Move out of the way. Move it!
Lieutenant Briggs: [after Harry moved from the car] Uphold the law.
You just killed three police officers, Harry. And the only reason
why I'm not gonna kill you, is because I'm gonna prosecute you-
with your own system. It'll be my word against yours. And who's
gonna believe you, Harry? You're a killer. A maniac.
Lieutenant Briggs: People are guilty until proven... I mean... God
damn it, you know what I mean!
Harry Callahan: Briggs, I hate the goddamn system, but until someone
comes along with changes that make sense, I'll stick with it.
[Harry and Walter are examining the car of the pimp shot to death]
Walter, Crime Scene Investigator: Now, he'd have to be standing right
here, this close. Point-blank range.
Harry Callahan: The driver's license and a hundred dollar bill were
out, almost like he was showing it to a traffic cop.
Walter, Crime Scene Investigator: Yeah. And from what we have it
figures to be someone impersonating a police officer. On the cars
at least, it's been done before. This close it would have to be
someone he would never recognize.
Harry Callahan: Or never suspect.
Harry Callahan: Where'd you learn to shoot like that? Certainly not
around here.
Officer Phil Sweet: No, sir. Airborne Rangers... Special Forces.
Harry Callahan: And how about the rest of these guys? Are they as
good as you?
Officer Phil Sweet: Well, Grimes here... I'd say he's about even with
me... Astrachan's a little better on a good day
Officer Red Astrachan: [snickers] A little better?
Officer Phil Sweet: And Davis there... he's just dog crazy. He's a
lot better.
Harry Callahan: A lot better? You sure show a sense of style... Sweet
is it? Well, when I get back on homicide I hope you boys will come
see me.
Harry Callahan: [at end of main titles] This is a 44. Magnum, the
most powerful handgun in the world. It can take your head clean
off. You've got to ask yourself one question, Do I feel lucky?
[fires at the audience]
Officer Phil Sweet: What kind of a load do you use in that .44?
Harry Callahan: It's a light Special. This size gun it gives you
better control and less recoil than a .357 Magnum with wadcutters.
Officer Davis: I feel somewhat responsible.
Carol McCoy: [to Harry] Damn. Do you think with all these kids I'm
ever going to get laid?
Sunny: [as Harry walks by to his appartment] Hi!
Harry Callahan: Oh, hi... what's your name?
Sunny: Sunny. You know, I've been living here for almost six months
now. It's funny I've never met you before.
Harry Callahan: Oh well... I work a lot.
Sunny: I know. You're the cop who lives upstairs.
Harry Callahan: That's right.
Sunny: Mind if I ask you a question?
Harry Callahan: Go ahead.
Sunny: What does a girl have to do to go to bed with you?
Harry Callahan: [blinks twice, then smiles] Try knocking on the door.
Harry Callahan: [seeing the three hold-up men come into the store]
Well, here's three salty-lookin' dudes!
Sunny: What does a girl have to do to go to bed with you?
Harry Callahan: [after a pause] Try knocking on the door.
Naked man: This coke is out of sight!
Naked woman: Oh, Guzman is the man, baby.
Naked man: Oh, you bitch. Don't spill it.
Lou Guzman: That stuff's worth $900 an ounce. You better not spill
it.
Naked woman: Don't get so uptight.
Lou Guzman: Nobody says "don't" to me. You understand? Nobody.
Pool Girl: Will you look at my ring?
