Goofs

SYNC: Sally talking on the phone when she is calling the other mothers. Continuity: When Sally and Gillian drag Jimmy into the house and over to the kitchen table, it has bowls and towels on it. In the next shot, when they lift him up onto the table, the table has nothing on it. Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: When Sally and Gilly drag Jimmy into the house and the door hits him in the head, you can clearly see him blink. Fact errors: The end credits misspell the name of the town of Coupeville, Washington (whom the producers thank). They leave off the first "e". Continuity: SPOILER: After placing the boyfriend on the table, Gillian unbuttons his shirt and cuts his undershirt. In the next shot of the boyfriend, his undershirt is uncut and shirt is buttoned up. Continuity: Hallet tucks the letter into his pocket twice. Continuity: When in his room with Sally, Gary Hallet takes off his jacket twice. Continuity: When the women gather for the circle, in the first shot Sally is standing next to Aunt Jet. In the next and subsequent shots Sally is standing next to Aunt Frances. Continuity: When Sally is outside cutting down the rose bush, her jeans have dirt marks on the knees. When she goes inside to get her sister, her jeans are clean. Continuity: In the garden, when Officer Hallet and Sally first meet, Sally is wearing a watch on her left wrist. When Sally looks at Officer Hallet's badge we can see her reflection, and she is not wearing the watch. When the scene continues she is wearing the watch again. Continuity: Officer Hallet is supposed to have one green and one blue eye. However, the moment Sally notices this is the only moment it happens. During the rest of the movie, both eyes are blue. Continuity: The close-up of the spinning stir stick shows Sally covering it with her left hand. In the next shot, she is hiding it with her right hand. SYNC: SPOILER: After burying Jimmy the sisters go back towards the house with their shovels, there is a scraping noise when the shovels drag against the ground. A few seconds later, the sound is still there yet both of their shovels are off the ground. Continuity: SPOILER: While standing in the house when Officer Hallet first comes to talk to the sisters, he notices a cut on Sally's collarbone, complete with dripping blood. The next day, there's not even a scratch. Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: When Gillian goes to get the whipped cream to write on Jimmy's chest, you can see him breathing. Continuity: During the opening sequence, Maria's hanging rope changes lengths. And the tightness of the rope around her neck also changes after she lands. Continuity: When the witches jump off the roof, they are in a different order when they land than when they were on the roof. Fact errors: SPOILER: The night of the murder, there are several very prominent shots of (and verbal references to) a full moon. Only four evenings later, as the murder is being investigated, Sally looks out at a very thin first-quarter crescent moon. In reality, such a moon would not appear until more than two weeks after a full moon. Continuity: When Sally and Gary are talking in his motel room he is wearing a plaid shirt. After she leaves and we see him looking out the window he is wearing a white shirt. Crew: SPOILER: When the coven of women are attempting to exorcise Jimmy's spirit, the equipment which causes the pictures on the wall to move (the ones which the children supposedly removed prior to this scene) is visible. Continuity: SPOILER: When all the witches are jumping off of the roof in the end of the movie, you can see one's feet step right up to the edge of the roof, and an iron ledge. Yet when the camera shows them all from the front, they are clearly still behind a low iron barrier. Continuity: When the sisters cut their hands, Gillian hugs Sally and puts her hand flat on Sally's back. When she moves her hand there is no blood on the robe. Continuity: Officer Hallet comes for breakfast, and when Sally first comes down the stairs her hair is straight. However, in the next shot, and all subsequent shots, her hair is curly. Continuity: When Sally and Gary are in his room and they begin to make out, we hear Sally drop her keys, but when she leaves, she doesn't pick them up and she never gets them back. Revealing mistakes: When Gillian first leaves, right before she and Sally cut their hands, she asks for her boyfriend's pocket knife. He clearly reaches for his pocket before she mentions what she needs. Continuity: When Gillian is driving to see Sally after the death of Sally's husband the lighting changes but the scenery doesn't. SYNC: When Sally and Gillian are drinking tequila with the aunts, Sally grabs the bottle and we hear her ask "Where did this bottle come from" twice, but the first time her lips don't move. In the next shot they do. CHAR: When Gillian is in the car before she goes to see Sally, she sings a song by Joni Mitchell. Gillian says "I would drink a 'piece' of you" even though the title and the words are "A Case of You". Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: Near the end, when all the women are standing in a circle with brooms end to end, in one scene it shows the pictures on the wall bouncing around. One shot shows the wall going in and out, without the picture on it. You can see the obvious sheet rock, perfectly cut out to match the picture that's not there, going in and out. Continuity: When Sally is on her way to her store for the first time you can see her wearing a green dress with no socks. Although Sally is still wearing the green dress when she walks in the store, after she sees her children in the window she is wearing a white dress with flowers on it and socks. Continuity: SPOILER: We see two almost identical shots of the left side of Jimmy's head in his revival scene, one before they begin doing the mouth sound and one just after they begin chanting. In the first scene, Jimmy clearly has a cut or scrape on his left temple, and in the second one it's gone. FAIR: SPOILER: When Sally is drawing the star on Jimmy's chest you can see the outline of the star in black before she covers it with whipped cream. This is not actually a goof, as Sally tells Gillian to "get something white to write on top of the star". Obviously one of them drew the star first as a guide. Continuity: SPOILER: During the kidnapping/murder scenes Gillian's make-up swings back and forth between running down her face and being perfectly applied. Continuity: In the scene where they are drinking tequila, and Gillian is asking about where they got it from, her braid moves from front to back over her shoulder several times with out her moving them. Continuity: SPOILER: When bringing the dead Jimmy into the house, they go the put him on the table. There are many items on the table, such as a white bowl, but in the next shot they disappear as they throw Jimmy onto the table. Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: At the end, when the ladies are all trying to vanquish Jimmy's spirit by cutting the sisters' hands, the same shot of the women being knocked back by a blast of light is shown twice, once as soon as the sisters grab hands, and again after the others form the circle. Continuity: When Gillian, Sally and Gary are talking about the ring that came out of the toad, the ring is first in between Gary's fingers and then appears on his index finger and alternates between shots of him and Gillian. Continuity: SPOILER: In the scene when the women are in the circle, near the end of the film, Sally notices that the spell is hurting Gillian and tells the others to stop it. She does this while standing still in her place, in the next shot she has ran half way round the circle and returns to her place even though we never see her move. The background music also jumps at this point as well. Continuity: When Sally and Gilly first go to live with their aunts, they seem to be wearing velvet dresses as they walk to the gate of their aunt's house. When they get up to the door of the house, about five seconds later, to be greeted by their aunts, they are in wool jackets and skirts. Revealing mistakes: When Sally is reading her letter to Gilly, she says that it's her 3rd anniversary. But you see Sally and her husband playing in the yard with their two daughters, who are both clearly older than 3 years old. Continuity: SPOILER: Near the end of the movie, when all of the women are standing in a circle with their brooms, the brooms go from being in the women's hands to being on the ground to back in their hands again when Gillian/Jimmy lunges for the outside of the circle. CHAR: When Gillian describes Jimmy to Sally (he reminds her of cowboy Dracula), she says that Transylvania is located in Bulgaria. It's in Romania. SYNC: The sisters have a 'Dualit' toaster in their kitchen. At one point the toaster makes a loud 'ping' noise and the toast shoots out. That model of Dualit doesn't do that. It has a lever that you have to use to manually lift out the toast. It doesn't ping either, it has a dial that counts down the seconds with a clockwork grind, and then just stops. CHAR: SPOILER: When the sisters are dragging Jimmy's dead body up onto the table Nicole Kidman's Australian accent comes out when she says "Watch his balls Sal." Continuity: When the girls look down at the "boot" tips sticking out of the ground, the left boot is pointed at about a 45 degree angle from the right. When it cuts back to a shot of them, the boots both point directly upward. CHAR: The Aunts tell Sally they are taking the girls to the solstice, and they return the morning after Jimmy dies talking about it. There are two solstices per year: summer and winter. It is obviously summer time by the way everyone is dressed on that night and the following days. The summer solstice is in late June. When Sally is chopping down the rose bushes that grew overnight by Jimmy's grave, Detective Hallard comes and comments that it's early for roses. Actually, in New England, June is right on target for roses. |
Quotes
|
Gary Hallet: Did you or your sister kill James Angelov? Sally Owens: Yeah, a couple of times. Aunt Jet Owens: And this is what comes from dabbling; I mean you can't practice witchcraft while you look down your nose at it. Sally Owens: All I want is a normal life. Aunt Frances Owens: My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being normal is not necessarily a virtue? It rather denotes a lack of courage! Sally Owens: Well, it's what I want. Sally Owens: What would you do, Gilly? Gillian Owens: What wouldn't I do... for the right guy? Sally Owens: [Sally's letter to Gillian] Sometimes I feel like there's a hole inside of me, an emptiness that at times seems to burn. I think if you lifted my heart to your ear, you could probably hear the ocean. The moon tonight, there's a circle around it. Sign of trouble not far behind. I have this dream of being whole. Of not going to sleep each night, wanting. But still sometimes, when the wind is warm or the crickets sing... I dream of a love that even time will lie down and be still for. I just want someone to love me. I want to be seen. I don't know. Maybe I had my happiness. I don't want to believe it but, there is no man, Gilly. Only that moon. Gillian Owens: Hang onto your husbands, girls! Sally Owens: Since when is being a slut a crime in this family? Jimmy Angelov: [while possessing Gillian] You know, girls, I'm feeling very into sisters right now. Sally Owens: Louis L'amour, who, by the way, was not a foreigner! He was from North Dakota, you asshole! Sally Owens: Can love really travel back in time and heal a broken heart? Was it our joined hands that finally lifted Maria's curse? I'd like to think so. But there are some things I know for certain: always throw spilt salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can. Gillian Owens: You ever put your arms out and spin really, really fast? Antonia Owens: She does it all the time. Gillian Owens: She does? Well, that's what love is like. It makes your heart race. It turns the world upside down. But if you're not careful, if you don't keep your eyes on something still, you can lose your balance. You can't see what's happening to the people around you. You can't see that you're about to fall. Sally Owens: I dream of a love that even time will lie down and be still for. Sally Owens: And I don't want them dancing naked under the full moon! Aunt Jet Owens: No, of course. The nudity is entirely optional. As you well remember! Sally Owens: [to Gary] The reason you're here and you don't know why is because I sent for you. Gary Hallet: Gary Hallet: What was that, Sally? That was him, wasn't it? Is he gone or what? Sally Owens: Sally: Yes, you killed his spirit, but I know I took his life. I'll tell you all need to know. I'll tell you how I did it, where I buried him, what I did it with. I'll tell you how Gary Hallet: Gary Hallet: Wow, wow wow, Hold on just a goddamn second, all right? One step at a time. I took on oath to uphold the law. I came here to bring in the bad guy because generally that's what I do. You asked me how many times I read your letter. I must've read it about a thousand times. I know now, It was your letter anything else that brought me here. It was you. And I'm all mixed-up about that. Kylie Owens: Mom, I'm worried about Antonia. Did you know that she put on her mouse ears and drives around town, all liquored up, NAKED? [after they make a binder ring snap on a mother's finger] Sally Owens: [to Gillian] Don't do that. Gillian Owens: It wasn't me, it was you! [Both giggling] Mother: Oh I am so please to report this, and the top of the phone tree list is... wait a minute, it's Sally Owens Gillian Owens: Whooo go Sal... now that was me! Children: Witch! Witch! You're a bitch! Witch! Witch! You're a bitch! Sally Owens: You'd think after three hundred years they'd come up with a better rhyme! [all drunk] Gillian Owens: You southern shrew! Aunt Jet Owens: Ingrate! Aunt Frances Owens: Goodie two shoes! Sally Owens: WITCH! Frances Owens: She heard the beetle ticking for your father's death all day long. She knew that when you hear the sound of the deathwatch beetle the man you love is doomed to die. Gillian Owens: Of course you're going to see me again. We'll grow old together. It's going to be you and me living in a big house... these two old biddies with all these cats. I bet we even die on the same day. Aunt Jet Owens: You see that couple here? Well, he's having an affair with the babysitter and she can eat a pound cake in under a minute. Sally Owens: It was the curse, wasn't it? He died because I loved him so much. Sally Owens: We were going to open a botanical shop. Where Mike would get all the ingredients and I'd make the stuff. He really loved my mint-oatmeal shaving cream. He couldn't stop eating it. Gary Hallet: Strange town. Never spent this much on shampoo before, in my life. Young Sally Owens: He will hear my call a mile away. He will whistle my favorite song. He can ride a pony backwards. Young Gillian Owens: What are you doing? Young Sally Owens: Summoning up a true love spell called Amas Veritas. He can flip pancakes in the air. He'll be marvelously kind. And his favorite shape will be a star. And he'll have one green eye and one blue. Young Gillian Owens: Thought you never wanted to fall in love. Young Sally Owens: That's the point. The guy I dreamed of doesn't exist. And if he doesn't exist, I'll never die of a broken heart. Carla: But Sally never gets picked cause everyone knows she's a w... [pauses after Linda give her a look] Carla: different! Gillian Owens: [possessed by Jimmy Angelov's spirit; crying] He wants me... just me. Everyone will be all right. Let him take me... Sally Owens: Don't die on me, Gillian Owens. Gary Hallet: Curses only have power when you believe them. And I don't. [walks away, pauses then turns to Sally] Gary Hallet: You know what? I wished for you too. Sally Owens: You should know she has the worst taste in men. Sally Owens: [to Gillian] Well, you do. Sally Owens: [cuts her hand] My Blood. [cuts Gillian's hand] Your Blood. [smacks their hands together] *Our* Blood. Jimmy Angelov: I was just thinking about you. Gillian Owens: You're always thinking about me. Aunt Jet Owens, Aunt Frances Owens: [singing] Someone left it on the porch Sally Owens: [after Michael's death; brings the spell book out] You brought him into my life and now I want you to bring him back. Bring him back! I have never asked you for anything. I've never asked you for spells but do this. I know you can bring him back. Aunt Jet Owens: No, dear. We won't do that. Aunt Frances Owens: We don't do that. Sally Owens: But you can. You can do this. I know you can. I remember. I found it here when mommy and daddy died. Aunt Frances Owens: Even if we did bring him back, it wouldn't be Michael. It would be something else. Something dark and unnatural. Sally Owens: [Starts crying] I don't care what he comes back as. As long he comes back. Please do this for me. Please? Please? Please? Please? Sally Owens: [Looking at Gary's eyes] One green, one blue... no, I can't. I have to go. [Leaves in a haste] Gary Hallet: [Confused]... I was born with it! |
