DATE: The film is set in the 1970s, but a 1990s-era Jeep Cherokee is visible in the background of a track-meet scene. Continuity: In actual footage of the Munich Olympics, the runners have numbers on their backs. The actors only have numbers on the fronts of their jerseys. Continuity: During the football scene at the start of the movie, when Steve first puts his helmet on it has no side ear pads. When he's hit a moment later and is on the ground the pads are there. DATE: During the running of the 10,000 meter race at the 1972 Munich Olympics, it shows the Star of David as the decimal point in the time on the television. The Star of David was not used until after the Israeli hostage crisis, and the race took place before the crisis. Revealing mistakes: When the runners start off the line for the Olympic 5,000 meter race, one runner obviously moves out of the way of the camera taking the shot. The runner veers to the left at the last second when he would have gone to the right. Revealing mistakes: In the middle of some of the racing scenes, runners are pictured running on the middle of the track when they should be running on the inside in lane 1. |

[Referring to the Nike "swoosh."] Steve Prefontaine: Looks like needless wind resistance to me. Steve Prefontaine: So, what have I got going for me? [stands] Why does some kid from Coos Bay with one leg shorter than the other win races? [pauses] Let me tell you something, all of my life people have said to me, "You're too small, Pre. You're not fast enough, Pre. Give up your foolish dreams, Steve!" But you know what, they forgot something: I have to win. There's no fallback here, no great stride, no long legs--nothing! [sighs] I'm sorry. [puts head down] Bill Bowerman: Nobody can coach desire, Pre. Mac Wilkins: I live for the discus. I hate Christmas and Thanksgiving and Easter - anything that breaks my routine. [first lines] Bill Bowerman: Pre turned distance running into a blood sport. You wanna know what he meant to folks around here? What was it [indecipherable] kids said back then? "You just had to be there." |
