| Plot: | In 1960s London Jimmy, loathing his dead-end job and dead-end parents, lives for his scooter and his Mod mates. August Bank Holiday in Brighton looks like it will be great, with a chance to see his Vespa-riding hero Ace, do battle with the Rockers, and maybe get lucky with Steph. Sadly, after the weekend, reality and disppointments crowd in all the more. |

Goofs
|
DATE: Rockers are wearing "MOT...RHEAD" T-shirts but the band didn't exist yet. DATE: The double LP "The Who Sell Out" and "A Quick One" special edition was not released until 1974. Continuity: The sign on the palm reader's shop front changes. Continuity: The fly-screen on the scooter that Jimmy steals disappears then reappears in the next shot. Continuity: SPOILER: Jimmy's "GS" Vespa changes as he rides it off the cliff. DATE: A cinema advertising Heaven Can Wait (1978) (released in 1978 can be seen in the background when the Mods fight against the Rockers. Continuity: When Jimmy and his gang leave the Goldhawk club to go after a gang of rockers, John goes with them. However in the next shot, he is back dancing inside the club. DATE: Although the film is set in the mid-sixties, the litter bins along Brighton promenade clearly show the "Keep Britain Tidy" logo, but this wasn't introduced in England until the mid-'70s. DATE: The blue and yellow-coloured British Rail trains seen passing behind Jimmy's house didn't come into service until the late-'70s. DATE: During one of the riots, a Pelican crossing introduced in the mid-'70s Crew: The shadow of the helicopter that filmed the final scenes on the white cliffs at Beachy Head is visible. Most people call these the white cliffs of Dover, but they aren't. The cliffs at Beachy Head are higher than the white cliffs of Dover. Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: Tire tracks from previous takes are visible during the final scene on the Beachy Head cliffs. Continuity: When Jimmy and Steph are running through the streets during the riot, Steph's shoes change from white stilettos to dark flat shoes and back again. DATE: Many late 1970s cars are seen in the background. Particularly during the "Goldhawk Road" and "Brighton riot" scenes. Similarly, all the street furniture, road markings and road signs are from the same era, and signs can be seen in (Brighton) shop windows advertising credit cards. Continuity: During the beach fight, John is fighting a rocker in the sea, however in the next shot of the gathering in the narrow street he is bone dry. DATE: On Jimmy's bedroom wall is an advertising poster for the Who on Track Records. Track Records didn't form until 1967. DATE: A 1972 Ivory Mercedes Benz 200 passes by in the background as Jimmy steals Sting's parked Vespa from the hotel. GEOG: On the road to the coast, the scooters stop and Jimmy shouts "That is Brighton." Actually, what we see in the distance is Eastbourne. Revealing mistakes: Large numbers of passers-by are watching from the promenade during the filming of the beach fight scenes. They (and their late-1970's clothes) appear in several shots. DATE: The Pepsi logo on the Brighton ice cream shop window behind Steph, as Jimmy is carried off to the paddy wagon, was not introduced until 1973. Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: The GS appears to have gone over the cliff twice. The initial shot of the scooter leaving the cliff show the scooter looking odd. This is due to damage received during the first take. The spare tire (behind the back-rest) is missing and the right-hand side cover can be seen coming free. The long, slow close-up shots of it falling are from the first take. Immediately after impact, it cuts to the second take's impact with the scooter in a different orientation and position (presumably as it was more spectacular). It is possible they missed the initial shot on the first take and had to re-do it using a long shot to disguise the damage to the scooter. DATE: in one scene Jimmy is in his bedroom and a train is seen moving quickly passed his window. The train is an 'Inter-City 125' which was not introduced on British Rail until the 1970s - the film is set in the 1960s. Continuity: Jimmy's cigarette disappears between shots whilst handing pills to Steph in the café. DATE: When Jimmy goes to the posh party, they play "My Generation". This film was supposed to be set in 1964, but "My Generation" was not released until 1965. GEOG: When the mods are heading off in pursuit of the rockers who beat up Spider, Edgware Road tube station can be seen. Seconds later there is a sign saying Shepherds Bush market. These places are actually miles apart. Fact errors: When Jimmy enters the scrap yard to see his Uncle, Peter Fenton, an 'NF' (National Front, a British white supremacist political party) graffiti is seen scrawled on the gates. The National Front was not officially formed until 1966, and its 'NF' symbol was not commonly seen in graffiti until the mid 1970's. |

Steph: Going to be one of the faces? Jimmy: What do you mean going to be? I AM one of the faces! Kev: I don't give a monkey's arsehole about Mods and Rockers. Underneath, we're all the same, 'n't we? Jimmy: No, Kev, that's it. Look, I don't wanna be the same as everybody else. That's why I'm a Mod, see? I mean, you gotta be somebody, ain't ya, or you might as well jump in the sea and drown. [on Kev's leather jacket] Jimmy: 'Ere, I never realized. Kev: Never realized what? Jimmy: You's a rocker. Kev: What, am I black or something? Jimmy: Well you ain't exactly white in that sort of get up, are you? Jimmy: Bellboyyyyyy! Jimmy: [from the cliff top after deciding not to be a mod] [shouts] Me! Mr. Fulford: Mr Cale tells me that you spent the weekend in Brighton, I imagine you were involved some extent in the disturbances there? Jimmy: Yeah I was there Mr. Fulford: Weren't arrested or taken or anything like that were you? Jimmy: No. Mr. Fulford: I must say I find your attitude incomprehensible. I feel I must warn you Cooper that we can't tolerate this kind of absentism amongst our junior staff. You got a good steady job here Cooper, plenty of young men would give their eye-teeth to be in your shoes. Jimmy: Oh yeah! Well find one then Mr. Fulford: I beg your pardon? Jimmy: You 'erd I said find one then. Yeah I'll tell you what you can do with your eye-teeth and your job, you can take the mail and the frankin machine and all that other rubbish I have to go about with and you can stuff them right up your arse! Peter: You'll be getting like them bloody beatniks before you know it. Ban the bomb and do fuck all for a living pouncing about all day. Peter: If you don't work, you don't get paid no money. And I like money. Ace Face: [Fined for rioting in Brighton] I'll pay now. Got a pen, judge? |
