| Plot: | November, 2004, New Mexico. Bud is a slacker with one good thing in his life, his engaging fifth-grade daughter Molly. On election day, Bud is supposed to meet her at the polling place. When he doesn't show, she sneaks a ballot and is about to vote when the power goes off. It turns out that New Mexico's electoral votes will decide the contest, and there it's tied with one vote needing recasting - Bud's. The world's media and both presidential candidates, including the current President, descend on Bud in anticipation of his re-vote in two weeks. Can the clueless Bud, even with the help of Molly and a local TV reporter, handle this responsibility? |

Continuity: Election Day is Tuesday. The next day, Bud is told he is certified to re-vote in 10 days, which would be a week from Saturday (Wednesday + 10 days). The next week, Tuesday is "Take your Father to School Day." That day that Bud visits the President one last time. That night, he crams for the debate, which is the next evening, Wednesday. Then he votes the day after that, Thursday, which is actually 8 days later. Continuity: When Molly confesses to Kate, the phone is ringing. When Kate watches the "hidden camera" replay, we do not hear the phone. Revealing mistakes: The power pole outside Bud's trailer has there is no power meter, even though wires go to the trailer. Continuity: When the media first show up at Bud's trailer, he looks out through a window on the right side (from the inside the way he is facing) of the door to his trailer and pulls down the left blind. When the camera changes to an outside view of the trailer, he pulls down the same blind, and the one beside it is already down, as though the sides changed positions. FAIR: When Bud wonders why so many people are outside his trailer, he tells Molly to turn on the TV. The screen shows Fox News Channel, but the TV has rabbit ears. Satellite TV subscribers sometimes need an antenna to view local channels. Continuity: When Bud is driving Richard Petty's race car, he asks Molly to get a photo of him with his chin out, so he "looks like a hero." He moves the the helmet-microphone off of his chin. In the next shot, it's back. Revealing mistakes: When Bud gets on stage at the party with Mr. Greenleaf, the woman directly behind Molly taps her on the head to signal when she should depart the scene. CHAR: When the election officials visit Bud and Molly for the second time, Bud asks if they can move the news people further back, because they did't get much sleep the night before. One of the election officials turns and signals the agent with ear piece standing behind them to go sort it out. As he walks off, he lifts his left sleeve to speak into the microphone, then quickly switches to his right sleeve once he realizes his mistake. GEOG: Texico, NM is near the Texas/New Mexico border, so you would not have seen the mountain range in the background. Revealing mistakes: When Bud and his daughter are first riding in their pick-up truck, the transmission is clearly in park. Continuity: When Bud and the President are talking on Air Force One one of the glasses disappears from the table and in the next shot both glasses are there again. Fact errors: The State Police vehicles shown in the movie have the traditional RED/BLUE color scheme. Real NMSP patrol cars have only red. Revealing mistakes: New Mexico State Police Troopers are seen wearing regular neck ties when in actuality the State Police uniform uses bow ties. FAIR: A large number of packages are delivered to Bud by a UPS driver, but in the next scene, letters with USPS stamps are shown. While UPS does not deliver First Class mail, the two scenes do not happen in the same setting; they only show that Bud is getting a lot of packages and mail, via different couriers. PLOT: Ex-Felons in New Mexico are permanently banned from voting. During the movie Bud is reminded by his daughter that he has one strike left, meaning he was a two time felon. This would make his vote illegal. Continuity: During the opening credits, the radio announcer in the background is describing the hotly contested presidential election, and mentions "incumbent Andrew Carrington". But in the story line the incumbent president's name is Andrew Boone. |
Quotes
|
Bud Johnson: America needs someone who's bigger than their speeches. Bud Johnson: You guys protect the President! Lewis: She's... she's smarter. Bud Johnson: I know exactly what you mean Andy. President Andrew Boone: Do you? Bud Johnson: Maybe not... Bud Johnson: I'll call them back. Molly Johnson: If we had a phone you could call them back. Bud Johnson: Did you save me any hot water? Molly Johnson: I don't know, did the water heater fix itself? Bud Johnson: What's that? Molly Johnson: Egg salad. Bud Johnson: Egg salad? Molly Johnson: You like egg salad. Bud Johnson: Yeah but not every damn day. Molly Johnson: We're on a budget. Bud Johnson: Well you've got to stir it up a bit. Molly Johnson: You want to eat better? Drink less beer. Kate Madison: [bowling] Remember when we were kids? This was the only thing to do on weekends. Bud Johnson: [laughs] It still is. President Andrew Boone: Do you like football? Bud Johnson: I'm an American aren't I? Molly Johnson: I want to live with Mom. Bud Johnson: So do I. Bud Johnson: Jesus, Molly, you've got to quit being such a smartass. Molly Johnson: And *you* have to stop using 'Jesus' as a cussword all the time. He's a billion people's Saviour. Bud Johnson: [reading a letter] If this is one of the richest countries in the world, why is it so many of us can barely afford living here?' Molly Johnson: Bud, if you blow this, I'm leaving. Molly Johnson: Maybe I should tell them the truth. Bud Johnson: What're you talking about? Tell them what? Molly Johnson: That *I* was going to be the one to cast the vote. Molly Johnson: All the world's great civilizations have followed the same path. From bondage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy back to bondage. If we are to be the exception to history, then we must break the cycle, for those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it. [first lines] Radio Announcer: After a hotly contested race Americans go to the polls today for what promises to be a very close election. The Republican incumbent Andrew Carrington is hoping to hold on to the Oval Office, taking on Democratic challenger... Molly Johnson: Don't forget today. Bud Johnson: Yeah uh, what's today? Molly Johnson: Election Day, dummy. I'm supposed to do a report on your voting, remember? Bud Johnson: Well I already told you before, I'm not even registered. Molly Johnson: I registered for you, in the mail. Bud Johnson: Well that's great. I'll get jury duty now... Molly Johnson: It's your civic responsibility. Bud Johnson: My what? Molly Johnson: It's your civic responsibility. Bud Johnson: My civic responsibility, where are you learning this crap? Molly Johnson: Mrs. Abernathy. Bud Johnson: Yeah, well stay away from her. Molly Johnson: She's my teacher. Bud Johnson: Ah. Molly Johnson: Sign this. Bud Johnson: What is it? Molly Johnson: A questionnaire. I'm supposed to ask you about your politics. Bud Johnson: Well uh, go ahead... Molly Johnson: I already filled it in. I wanted you to sound smart. Kate Madison: The only question is who you voted for, and are you going to vote the same way? Bud Johnson: Remind me again, uh, who's running? Molly Johnson: Remember dad, no cussing. |
