Plot: Wes Craven produces this remake of his 1977 classic of the same name, about the Carters, an idyllic American family travelling through the great American southwest. But their trip takes a detour into an area closed off from the public, but more importantly from society. An area originally used by the U.S. Government for nuclear testing that was intended to be empty...or so they thought? When the Carter's car breaks down at the old site, they're stranded...or are they? As the Carters may soon realize that what seemed like a car casually breaking down, might actually be a trap. This trap might be perpetrated by the inhabitants of the site who aren't pulling a prank, but are out to set up a gruesome massacre.

Goofs

Revealing mistakes: As Bobby and Brenda are loading the bodies into the van, Lynne can be seen breathing.
DATE: Signs on a chain-link fence and in the model town state that the area is managed by the U.S. Department of Energy, which was not established until October 1977. In fact, the U.S. stopped atmospheric tests of nuclear weapons in 1962, when the area would have been managed by the Department of Defense.
Continuity: SPOILER: In the last fight, Doug's glasses get knocked off. In the next shot, they're back on his face like before.
Revealing mistakes: The clear fluid poured onto the tire changes into a cinematographic "burn gel" just before Brenda lights it.
Continuity: The position of the ketchup, mustard, and drink pitcher on the table outside the trailer changes between shots.
Continuity: When Bobby is lying down in the trailer, he checks his watch at 11:49 PM and the gun can be seen behind him perfectly parallel with the ledge. He then hears Beast barking outside, gets up and reaches to grab the gun. The camera cuts to a close-up of the gun as Bobby grabs it, however it is now rotated 45 degrees between shots.
Continuity: The first time we see the family's 1990 Chevy Suburban, it's sitting on tall/wide off road tires and after-market chrome spoke wheels. Later in the same scene and for the rest of the movie, the Suburban is riding on the more narrow factory stock wheels and tires .
Continuity: After showing the tires on the truck getting completely punctured and deflating, in the next scene, just prior to hitting the big rock, the truck's tires are clearly still inflated.
Continuity: When Beauty runs into the gas station and Lynn goes after him, Lynn sees the bag on the table, the one with the ear inside it, then lifts a flap to peek inside the bag. The flap then falls down just the way it was, closing the bag again. When the gas station owner looks at the bag just after Beauty and Lynn left, the bag is wide open.
Crew: At the beginning of the movie, after the title sequence and during a long crane shot toward the gas station, the film crew can be seen in a reflection on the green car's windows.
Continuity: When all of the family except dad is in the trailer on the first night Bobby locks the door from the inside with a key. After the Doug and Lynn say that they are going to sleep in the truck because it is too crowded they walk right out the door without unlocking it.
Continuity: The SUV changes position after striking the large rock. When it first crashes it is against the rock, later the vehicle has moved further forward and to the right.
Continuity: SPOILER: In one scene where Doug is battling Pluto in the house, Pluto takes the ax to Doug's fingers, chopping off the tips of them. Later in the movie, both Doug's left and right hands are fine, with no fingers cut off.
Continuity: When Doug is in the town in search for Catherine he reaches the house with the machine chugging next to it. Here the sunlight is coming from the right side of the house. In the next shot, the mutant with the neck brace drags a body from in front of the house. Now it can be clearly seen that the sun has moved all the way to the left of the house.
Continuity: In the beginning when Pluto kills the first researcher, you see the ax go through the mask, so the mask has a hole in it. When the researcher falls on the ground, his mask doesn't have a hole, it's just like it was.
Crew: When Doug stands at the edge of the enormous blast crater, a shadow falls along his arm, but there is nothing near him that could have caused this.
Continuity: When the two mutants are in the trailer, their positions (one by the baby, one with the daughter) changed with the cut to the mother who entered the trailer and back.
Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: After Doug is done battling Pluto, when he goes for his glasses and starts to walk for the door, you can see the moon shape in the Axe where he swung it into his head.
Continuity: SPOILER: At the end of the movie, Doug has Beast by his collar, in that scene you can see the dog struggling like he doesn't want to be still, in the next scene (different view) Beast is calm and standing beside him.
Continuity: SPOILER: At the end when Doug is chasing Ruby because she has Catherine, Lizard shows up. When Doug is fighting Lizard, he hits Lizard in the nose with the shotgun and breaks his nose, blood is seen all over Lizards shirt, but when it switches back to Lizard about 2 seconds after, you see all the blood is gone off of Lizards face and shirt.
Continuity: As Doug is laying in the box with all the body parts trying to get out, a chopped-off arm is standing up behind him. In the next scene it's lying down, and in the next again, its standing back up.
Continuity: In the scene where Bobby is chasing after Beauty, the sweat stains on his shirt change size.
Continuity: At the beginning of the movie, Bobby can be seen to be wearing blue boxer shorts. Towards the end, they're black.
Continuity: SPOILER: Near the end, Bobby closes and booby-trap's the trailer doors. After he and his sister have tied an attacking mutants hands to a side trailer window, they climb out the back window and run up a hill. When they look back at the trailer the door is now wide open. Next, the mutant frees himself and we see him open the, now closed, trailer doors setting off the booby-trap.
Crew: When Doug sees Catherine lying on the bed in Big Mama's house in the village, she begins to roll over, and we can see a hand reach up to stop her from rolling from the bed.
Continuity: When the family is setting up the camper after they crash, the shadow on the wall of the camper from the shade cloth is not matched with the time. It starts with the sun very high in the sky and then it shows the shadow like the sun is very low, all within a few minutes of conversation.
Continuity: When the grungy gas station man is looking through the stuff in the bag, he has his cigar in his mouth, but after he looks behind him there is no cigar.
Continuity: When Doug takes Beast through the tunnel, he's carrying the torch in his right hand and the baseball bat in his left. When the shot cuts by 180 degrees as he comes out into the light, he has the bat in his right hand and the torch is nowhere to be seen (he could have just dropped it in his bag, but there certainly wasn't time to switch hands with the bat).
Continuity: Lynn hits Lizard on the left side of his face/head with the skillet. During the next few quick shots, Lizard screams and is pointing the gun at the baby, and there's no blood on the left side of his face. Once Lynn says "no please", the camera view of Lizard from behind Lynn shows blood all over his left cheek. He then reaches out to touch Lynn's face, we see a shot of Lynn's face, then when it cuts back to Lizard the blood on his left cheek is gone.
Continuity: When Doug first enters the town, we see a mutant dragging Lynn away. Later when it cuts back to Brenda and Bobby, they are loading Lynn into the backseat of the car.
Revealing mistakes: Although he is totally grungy in the scene where he is looking at the human ear in the Styrofoam container, the gas station attendant's fingernails are nicely manicured.
GEOG: African vulture in New Mexico.
CHAR: When Bobby is telling Doug and Lynn about seeing their dog dead and sliced open in the hills, he says that Beast was killed. It was Beauty, not Beast, who was killed and cut open.
CHAR: The father asks for directions to Interstate 88. They are along way off being they are supposedly in California when I88 is entirely located in upstate NY.
GEOG: When Doug enters the house and takes the baby, Big Momma is watching "Divorce Court" (1999). The picture is crystal clear. There was certainly no cable in this area, and a broadcast signal, if it could even be picked up, would likely be of extremely poor quality due to the mountains. These mountains also block the family's radio transmissions.
Fact errors: The fire extinguisher used to attempt to put out the fire on the father is a CO2 (carbon dioxide) type. The man using it was holding on the nozzle, but anyone holding on to a CO2 nozzle would have their hand severely frozen and stuck to the nozzle.

Quotes

Small Deformed Child: Mister, will you play with us?
Big Brain: Kill the baby.
Doug Bukowski: Bobby, where are you going?
Bobby Carter: Fucking kill those motherfuckers!
Doug Bukowski: 97% of nation wide service, and we get stuck in the
3%.
Bobby Carter: Can you hand me a twinkie?
Brenda Carter: [Papa Jupiter has just been impaled in an explosion,
but he is not fully dead. Brenda comes charging out of nowhere with
a pick-axe and slams it into the mutants head - killing him]
Fucker!
Big Bob: Bobby, leave Doug alone. He's a democrat. He doesn't believe
in guns.
Doug Bukowski: Give me back my baby!
Lizard: [Pluto is raping Brenda. Lizard comes over to him and starts
beating him] You gotta be a man to do that!
Lynn: Hey B.
Brenda Carter: Hey.
Lynn: How you holding up?
Brenda Carter: I am thrilled.
Lynn: [laughing] Yea. This is a total drag.
Brenda Carter: Yea, well, you know, I really don't care what they
say. Next year, I am going to Cancun with my friends. Not going on
any more of these little family trips.
Lynn: Well, we're not not gonna have many more of them, you know? And
if you want to go to Cancun, you know you're gonna have to get a
job.
Brenda Carter: Oh, yea, what, you mean like your job?
Lynn: Brenda, I help Doug out at the store, okay?
Brenda Carter: Oh, yea...
Doug Bukowski: Honey? Can you bring me my jacket?
Brenda Carter: [Pretending to be Lynn] I'll be right there, honey.
Lynn: [gets up and walks away while flicking Brenda off]
Brenda Carter: [laughing]
Ethel: [Doug and Big Bob are about to go and look for help] I think
that we should pray before you go.
Brenda Carter: Oh mom!
Ethel: Brenda, is it really so much to ask?
Big Bob: Come on.
Brenda Carter: [sighs] Thank god no one's watching us.
[first lines]
Gas Station Attendant: Ruby, is that you?
[title card]
title card: Between 1945 and 1962 the United States conducted 331
atmospheric nuclear test. Today, the government still denies the
genetic effects caused by the radioactive fallout...
[last lines]
Brenda Carter: Come on, let's get out of here. Oh, my God. Look,
Bobby.
[while searching for baby Katherine, Doug encounters Big Brains]
Doug Bukowski: Where's my daughter?
Big Brain: [wheezing] I don't know where she is, I never leave this
place. Your people asked our families to leave the towns, and you
destroyed our homes. We went into the mines, you set off your
bombs, and turned everything to ashes. You made us what we've
become. Boom! Boom! Boom! [laughs]
Doug Bukowski: What's so funny?
Big Brain: It's breakfast time!
[Suddenly Pluto breaks through the door with an axe and swings it at
Doug]
