| Plot: | 12-year-old Dre Parker could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying - and the feeling is mutual - but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts "the karate kid" on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han, who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life. |

Continuity: When Dre's jacket is on the ground before Mr. Han tells him to pick it up, the jacket is seen in many different places before the final shot. Continuity: After Dre gets beaten up at the playground, you see him in the bathroom putting on his mom's foundation over his black eye. He puts the foundation on almost an inch under his eye, only covering about an inch in height on his cheek. Yet if you look closely in the next scene when he is walking to school with his mom, the foundation is now directly under his eye and covers most of his cheek. FAIR: The title "The Karate Kid" is a direct reference to the bullies calling him the "Karate Kid" when he takes up a stance at the beginning of the fight. Continuity: The plane shown taking off to take the Parkers to China is different from the one shown landing in China. The planes shown have different registration numbers which are seen on the fuselages (specifically B-2460 and B-2443). Fact errors: The film shows the Parkers flying from Detroit to Beijing on Air China. Air China does not fly into or out of Detroit. Continuity: During the scene where Dre gets beat up at the park Meiying and Cheng alternate positions between the camera being focused on Dre and focused on the two. GEOG: The flight that Dre and his mom takes from Detroit is actually a flight from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York to Beijing. CHAR: When in the fight in the tournament Dre gets hit by his opponent, every appears is disappointed except Meiyeing's dad, who can be seen applauding. Continuity: Throughout the tournament they all bow at the start of each round. In the finals they do not bow but start straight away. GEOG: On the way from Beijing Airport (North East Beijing) to the Parker's new house they drive past the CCTV building (South East Beijing) and then the Birds Nest (North Bijing). No one would drive this route. Continuity: During the last fight, Dre holds his right leg after injuring his left, then switches back to his left in the next shot. Fact errors: In this film children are fighting full contact with no protective gear. This would never be allowed in any kung fu tournament of the scale shown. It would either be point-scoring sparring with minimal contact, or the children would be wearing protective gear e.g. mouth-guards, headgear, and gloves. CHAR: Chinese Valentine's day is celebrate in August in China, but Mr. Han says his wife and son died the 8th of June after the festival. Continuity: Dre places his chopsticks on the left side of his food tray at the food court. But the next frame he has them in his right hand and placing them onto the food tray for the second time. DATE: The Qixi Festival that Dre attends with his mom and Mr. Han falls on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar. Though the exact date in our modern calendar varies from year to year, it is usually sometime in August. However, a few scenes after this festival, Mr. Han says the date is June 8th. This is not possible unless 11 months had passed in those few scenes. Continuity: The contents of Dre's lunch tray when he is on food line is empty. He hands tray in at end of food line and when it comes back, it is full. |

Dre Parker: Mr. Han... do you know you got a car in your living room? Dre Parker: You don't know the rules? Mr. Han: Simple. You hit him, don't let him hit you. Mr. Han: You've already accomplished everything you wanted to. Why do you still want to fight? Dre Parker: Because win or lose, I don't want to be afraid any more. And I'm still afraid. Dre Parker: I get it. You're Yoda and I'm like a Jedi. Mr. Han: Jacket on! Jacket off! Dre Parker: Look, this guy is *at least* four-hundred years old. Dre Parker: [being beaten at ping-pong by an old man] C'mon, man. I'm twelve. Dre Parker: [Cheng says something in chinese] Whatever he's saying, he is lying! Mr. Han: What happened to eye? Dre Parker: I ran into a pole. Mr. Han: interesting pole. Sherry Parker: Dre, what happened? Dre Parker: We moved to China! That's what happened! Mr. Han: I don't go... Sherry Parker: Mr. Han, I'm not taking 'no' for an answer. Dre Parker: [after Mr. Han does a cool move] Whoa...! Mr. Han: Focus! Mr. Han: Everything... is Kung Fu. Mr. Han: Your focus needs more focus. Dre Parker: Be kinda hot if I won this thing, huh, Mr. Han? Mr. Han: Be kinda hot if you focused. Dre Parker: Yeah, well, after that. Mr. Han: Rock and roll. Mr. Han: Sometimes the most important fights are the ones you avoid. Sherry Parker: So... how many students do you have? Mr. Han: Including Dre? Sherry Parker: Yes... Mr. Han: One! Mr. Han: Dre, you taught me very important lesson: Life will knock us down, but we can choose whether or not to stand back up. |
