Plot: In the lands of Middle Earth, the Dark Lord Sauron forged a Ring of Power to control all the peoples and creatures of Middle Earth. The Ring was taken from him and fell into the hands of Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit from The Shire - a place of complete innocence. The Ring was then passed onto young Hobbit Frodo Baggins, with one task set before him - to destroy the Ring of Power. Frodo begins his perilous journey through the lands with a Fellowship that will protect him on his mission. Their mission; to destroy the Ring of Power in the only place it can be destroyed - the fires of Mount Doom.

Goofs

FAIR: Many viewers spotted a car in the background of the theatrical version when Sam says that he is now the furthest he has ever been from home. In a 1 December 2003 Newsweek article, director Peter Jackson confirmed this, and revealed the car had been removed digitally for the DVD release. Jackson says: "We actually didn't know about the car until we were cutting the movie. The smoke and dust wasn't so bad because there was already lots of it around, but the bloody windshield was reflecting the sun back into the camera lens. So we erased it for the DVD. I think some people were upset because they tried to show it to their friends and it was gone." (The infamous car can be seen on the "Academy DVD" which was created for the Oscar jurors and leaked on the Internet. Also, the unaltered shot with the car appearing in it is contained in the bonus material of the SEE DVD - the feature about the film score.)
FAIR: Gimli attempts to smash the ring with an axe which is completely destroyed, breaking into several pieces. In the next shot the pieces are missing and, when he pledges his axe to Frodo several minutes later, the axe is suddenly intact. In fact, he snatches the axe of the dwarf next to him to attack the ring.
Revealing mistakes: As Frodo runs from the orcs, his cape is clearly supported by a string to make it look flowing.
Continuity: SPOILER: As Boromir lies dying, Aragorn leans over him. In the shots over Aragorn's shoulder, looking at Boromir, Boromir's right hand rests on Aragorn's left shoulder. In shots looking at Aragorn, the hand is not there. This is because these shots looking at Aragorn while he is speaking to Boromir were actually shot without Sean Bean.
Continuity: While the four hobbits (Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin) are at The Prancing Pony in Bree, Merry returns from the bar with a pint and Pippin takes off to get his own. When the angle changes to an over-head shot, Merry is no longer at the table and Pippin is suddenly back in place. This was obviously a shot that carried over from the previous scene (prior to Merry's return from the bar).
Continuity: When Sam reveals to Gandalf what he overheard of Gandalf's and Frodo's conversation, a map disappears and reappears under his right shoulder. The fallen books on the floor also change position between shots.
SYNC: When Arwen and Aragorn are alone together on a bridge in Rivendell, her lips are moving while he is speaking.
SYNC: In the dwarf mine, when Gandalf sits outside the three doorways and talks to Frodo, Frodo's close-ups are taken from reaction shots to Gandalf's speech so that we see Gandalf's beard moving as if he was talking, even though no sound is heard.
Continuity: When Aragorn's pack bumps the camera, it's on his right shoulder, but in the next shot you see it's on the left.
Continuity: Throughout the movie, Frodo's fingernails are very bitten down and short, but a close-up when the Black Rider tries to sniff him out shows neatly manicured nails.
Continuity: The positions of Gimli's axes as he stands in Balin's tomb.
Revealing mistakes: The forced perspective trick becomes visible while Gandalf and Bilbo are having tea. As Bilbo is pottering about, Gandalf sits on a Hobbit-sized chair at a table that is too small for him. As he shuffles slightly to get comfortable, his knees move the table, but only his, smaller, half moves - the other half, where Bilbo is seated, is further away from the camera, and stays put. It can be seen that this gap between the two table "halves" is concealed behind cleverly placed, bottles, plates, etc. Then, when Bilbo is about to pour hot water in the teapot, Gandalf lifts the teapot lid for him. The lid is not on the teapot, but placed on a spike nearer to the camera to create the forced perspective. It is also clearly visible when Gandalf puts the lid back.
Continuity: Gandalf's belt repeatedly switches between being tied and untied as he speaks to Bilbo.
Continuity: The rope handle of Gandalf's staff jumps around his hand between cuts during his meeting with Saruman.
Continuity: When Gandalf first appears riding on his cart, there is a long grey-green cloth hanging from the lantern on the right-hand side of the cart, with Gandalf's staff on the left. In the next shot, the lantern and cloth have switched sides with the staff (which itself moves back and forth between shots as Gandalf and Frodo travel into the village). It would seem that the first shot has been flipped so that the "road" bends round to the left to match the curve of the road as Gandalf approaches Frodo in the next shot.
Continuity: When Saruman first attacks Gandalf he uses his staff in his right hand. In the next shot from behind Saruman he is holding his staff with his left hand above his right hand, but in the next shot from the front it is back with his right hand above his left.
Continuity: At the council of Lord Elrond, once the fellowship has been formed, in the close-ups of the hobbits you can see that they measure up above Gandalf's beard and Legolas's hair, almost up to their necks, but in the wide shots of the whole fellowship they are clearly smaller - only about waist height.
SYNC: As Saruman reveals the Palantir to Gandalf, he lifts the cloth while speaking the line "Why should we fear to use it?" As he finishes the line, his mouth is still moving.
Revealing mistakes: After the huge orc battle, one of the "dead" orcs sits up and has a good look round before lying back down. This has been explained away in all manner of different ways, but it strikes a sufficient number of viewers as incongruous that it seems more likely to be a genuine error than not.
Continuity: Boromir's shield continually disappears and reappears during the battle at Balin's tomb.
Revealing mistakes: In the theatrical version, Saruman's lower legs disappear for a frame or two as the camera swoops toward him when he is standing on the summit of Orthanc, bringing the lightning down on the mountain. This has been corrected in the extended edition of the film.
Revealing mistakes: When Boromir cuts his finger on the broken sword, the blood is visible on his finger behind the sword before he gets cut, and as the sword is pulled away, his undamaged fingertip is visible through the blood.
Revealing mistakes: When Bilbo takes Gandalf's hat and staff at Bag End. The staff has been erased behind Bilbo, preventing it from getting a false perspective in the composited scene
Continuity: In the Extended Edition, Sam and Frodo change places between shots when they see the Wood Elves leaving.
Continuity: Before the water creature attacks, Frodo is facing the lake/facing the mine entrance between shots.
Continuity: When Frodo crouches back from the Ringwraiths on Weathertop, the Ringwraith closest to him has a sword in his right and a knife in his left hand. After Frodo puts on the Ring, the Ringwraith's left Hand can be seen - but the knife is gone.
Revealing mistakes: When the dragon-firework Merry and Pippin have stolen goes off, the fuse is still burning. Several inches of fuse clearly remain, yet it launches.
Revealing mistakes: During filming Christopher Lee broke his finger. As Saruman is summoning the lightning when the fellowship are climbing the snowy mountain, as the camera swoops past Saruman you can see Lee's heavily bandaged finger.
SYNC: When the troll grabs Frodo by the leg, Frodo calls for Aragon but his lips don't match what he's saying.
FAIR: Gandalf loses his staff when he is imprisoned by Saruman, but later he has it again. Or so it seems. Actually, it's a visibly different staff. He also seems to lose his hat, but he leaves it on his horse, whose fate is never established. It doesn't seem implausible that it could have made its way back to Rivendell, just as Bill the pony is expected to do later in the movie, so that Gandalf could have retrieved his hat when he made his way there himself.
Revealing mistakes: When first in the mines of Moria, Gandalf is walking along a ledge right before he explains what the dwarves' mine for, you can see him kick the wire that lights up his staff.
Continuity: When the four Hobbits enter the Prancing Pony, there's a book on the counter with nothing on it. In the following shot, there is a feather lying on the book and a little bottle of ink next to it.
Continuity: When King Elendil is hit by Sauron and falls to the ground, his helmet is on his head, when Isildur runs to him, it is lying beside him.
Continuity: SPOILER: In the final fight between Aragorn and Lurtz, Aragorn is thrown against a tree and we see his sword fall from his hand. The next shot shows Lurtz throwing his shield pinning Aragorn to the tree and again we see his sword fall from his hand.
Continuity: After Gandalf pounds his magical staff into the stone on the bridge of Khaza-Dûm, a wideshot is shown in which the head of the staff is on the left side of his face (our left), but in the following close-up, it is on his right
Continuity: SPOILER: When the Balrog snares Gandalf at the bridge of Khazad-Dum with its whip and pulls Gandalf to the edge of the broken bridge, the bridge surface is smooth and no ridges are visible all the way to the edge of the broken bridge. The tracks left by Gandalf's hands in the dirt on the bridge further indicate that. However, in the next shot when Gandalf is clinging to the bridge, just before he says, "Fly, you fools," there is a ridge that Gandalf uses to grab on that is not present in the previous shot.
Revealing mistakes: As Elrond is explaining the quest, the close-ups of the Ring reflect the top of the set on which it was filmed.
Continuity: When Gandalf arrives at the hobbit village, he lauches some fireworks and the children cheer and jump with their hands in the air. In next shot, at least one of them (to the right of the screen) has both arms pressed to her body.
Continuity: Immediately after the Riders are overthrown in the river, a shot of Arwen shows her right arm (holding the sword) lowered. In the next shot, her arm is raised high over her head, as though she were still challenging the riders.
Continuity: As Frodo catches a ride on Gandalf's cart through the Shire, in close-ups, sunlight is brightly shining on Frodo's face from the right, but in close-ups of Gandalf sitting beside him, the sunlight is coming from above and left.
Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: At the end of the film, there is a wide shot showing Merry being carried off by the Uruk-hai. It is clear that the full-sized, 5-foot-7 Dominic Monaghan is in the shot rather than the scale double - his feet hang way down below the Uruk-hai's hips.
Revealing mistakes: When Aragorn is leading the hobbits through the Midge-water Marshes and Pippin falls flat on his face you can see the prosthetics on his foot falling off.
Continuity: When Gandalf knocks on the door at Bag End, there is a small leather pouch attached to his satchel. When he is walking through the door, it has disappeared.
Continuity: When Arwen is challenging the Ring Wraiths at the ford, her hair alternates between hanging down in front of her and hanging down her back.
Continuity: When Galdalf and Saruman are fighting on Orthanc, the bloody cut on Gandalf's forehead disappears and reappears between shots.
Continuity: After Bilbo's birthday party, Bilbo enters his house and takes off the ring. He then steps over to a walking stick, picks it up with his left hand and transfers it to his right hand. In the very next shot the stick is back in left hand, and what appear to be a couple of small maps are now in his right hand.
Continuity: When the Ring Wraiths are at the river, they draw their swords left handed. In the very next shot, all nine swords are in Right hands.
Continuity: The distance at which Gimli is kneeling from Balin's tomb changes between shots. In one shot he is close enough to lean his head/helmet on the tomb, in the other shots he is much further away.
Continuity: During the fight between Gandalf and Saruman, Saruman closes all the doors in the tower. During the fight Gandalf is thrown around a lot and you can see one of the doors open, but in the next shot Saruman is thrown at this door which then breaks open (again).
Continuity: SPOILER: After Boromir is shot with two arrows and is still trying to fight the Uruk-hai, the arrows disappear completely, then one can be seen (the one in his shoulder), then finally two again. When only the one arrow is seen, you can still see the blood stain from the second arrow, but the arrow is not there. When he is hit by the third arrow, all three arrows are visible. When Aragorn is kneeling over Boromir, after Boromir dies, and starts to stand up, there only appears to be two arrows in his body at that time.
Continuity: SPOILER: When Aragorn defeated Lurtz's Uruk Hai he had blood in his mouth but when he ran and talked to Boromir there was no blood.
Continuity: When the company set out, they have Bill the pony with them. In a later long shot, Bill is nowhere to be seen. In a shot after this, Bill is back with them.
Continuity: When the hobbits first see Aragorn his beard is shaved down but when Aragorn saw Frodo disappear and took him into a private room his beard is fully grown.
Revealing mistakes: As the hobbits scramble to get up after their fall over the cliff near Farmer Maggot's field, the 'poop' that Pippin has just narrowly missed is bumped, revealing it to be rubber.
Continuity: When Gandalf and Frodo are first discussing the history of the ring in Bag End, Frodo is pouring the drink. In the next shot, he's already sitting down with a drink in his hand.
Crew: Reflectors can be seen in the Lothlorien scene, in the mirrorbowl as well as the watercan.
Continuity: When Bilbo opens the door of his house to greet Gandalf, the wizard raises his hand from his side when he says, "Bilbo Baggins!" However, in the next shot, his hand is back at his side as if he hadn't moved.
Continuity: The ring on Aragorn's forefinger moves from the left to the right forefinger several times during the movie.
SYNC: As Gandalf and Bilbo smoke "the finest weed of the Southfarthing" Bilbo blows out a ring of smoke that Gandalf watches, after that we see Bilbo's mouth saying something, but there's no audio.
Continuity: In the palantir scene between Gandalf and Saruman, Saruman says that the eye of Sauron sees past all, including flesh. In that shot a ring can be seen on Gandalf's finger (one of the three elvish rings). Then Saruman says, "You know of what I speak Gandalf," and in the very next shot, the ring is gone.
SYNC: When Frodo meets Bilbo in Rivendell and hugs him, you can hear Bilbo say "Ohh!" in delight of seeing Frodo again; however his mouth doesn't move.
Revealing mistakes: When Frodo falls and rolls down the snowy slope of the mountain (when they approach the pass), the line where his prosthetic hobbit feet ends on his lower legs, is clearly visible.
Revealing mistakes: When the fellowship is running into Moria escaping from the Watcher, the prosthetic masks of the hobbits' size doubles are easily seen.
Revealing mistakes: Near the end of the movie when Sam has sunk below the water when he's chasing Frodo, there is a supposed shot of Sam under water, but if you look closely, you can see that the bubbles are placed later, there is no distortion of light from the waves, and his hair and cape are being moved as though by wind, showing that he was on strings above a fan on a green screen.
Revealing mistakes: During the battle with the Uruk-Hai, at least three of them can be heard to deflate as they collapse, something that should have been edited out but was left.
Revealing mistakes: When Arwen first meets Strider she mentions that only 5 of the wraiths are behind them. When Arwen is being chased by them at an hour and 10 minutes and 55 seconds into the DVD there is a clear shot of the riders chasing them set in a v formation. There are clearly eight wraiths chasing them. Even if the other four showed up there should be nine.
Continuity: SPOILER: When Boromir is fighting the Uruk Hai the first arrow is shown as piercing his left shoulder. A second arrow is then shot at him and shown to strike in exactly the same position. The camera then shows a wider angle shot where he has one in his shoulder and one in his gut. This is on the Australian DVD version.
Continuity: In the Extended Edition, when Gandalf begins to speak in the language of Mordor, a long shot of Elrond is seen, at which point he puts his hand on his forehead. In the close-up immediately afterwards, his hand is down and he again puts it to his head.
Revealing mistakes: After the Ring Wraiths break down the entrance to the village (the scene after Aragorn talks to Frodo and the others at the prancing pony), one ring-wraith turns toward a light and you can see the mask which hides their face but allows them to see out (like the Halloween masks). A ring-wraith is supposed to have no physical form other than when they are being looked at with the ring.
Revealing mistakes: In Lothlorien, when Boromir and Aragorn are sitting and talking about Minas Tirith, the wind is blowing their hair, yet the leaves in the background remain still.
CHAR: When Frodo is looking out at Rivendell from the balcony, we see his hands on the rail. The rail only comes up to his waist, and he can comfortably rest his hands on it. However, Rivendell is an Elven city, so the rail should be above his head.
Continuity: When the first Uruk is "born" and he kills the Orc standing next to him, he is muddy and his arms are not on his chest. In the next shot of him standing up, the mud is gone and replaced with slime and his arms are crossed on his chest.
SYNC: SPOILER: When the cave troll is stabbed by the spear in Balin's tomb, he is holding his club behind his head and then drops it but there is no sound as the club hits the ground.
Crew: When the fellowship is departing from Lothlorien, Galadriel is seen riding in the swan boat across the river. If you look into the background to the left of the screen, a crew member can be seen crouching down and looking about.
Revealing mistakes: Just after Bilbo's panicked search for the ring in Bag End, the camera pulls away for a long shot, and Bilbo's foot can be seen bouncing on the ground, revealing it to be a rubber prosthetic.
Revealing mistakes: It is clear, that in some long shots of the scene in which the fellowship is formed in Rivendell, smaller stand ins (resembling children) are used to contrast height and are clearly not Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan or Billy Boyd .
FAIR: The main Ringwraith on Weathertop draws its sword twice as it approaches Frodo. However, this stuttering image may be deliberate. Before Frodo puts on the Ring, we can see all of the Ringwraiths draw their swords. After Frodo puts on the Ring, the main Ringwraith draws a short sword. The long sword for a sword fight, keeping one's opponent at sword's length. The short sword for Frodo's execution, since he didn't put up a fight there was no need for the long sword.
Revealing mistakes: When Legolas spots the "crebain" birds from Dunland and warns the fellowship to take cover, his eyes are brown. Yet as an elf and the rest of the movie his eyes are blue. This is because Orlando Bloom had to wear contacts to change the color of his eyes, but could not wear them consistently because they scratched his corneas. Most of the time, his eye color was digitally changed, but they missed it in this shot.
Continuity: When Frodo leaves the fellowship to continue on his own to Mordor, there's a tear running down his right cheek. When we next see him, the tear is on his left cheek and there is no evidence of it being on the right side. In the extended DVD version, there are tear tracks on both sides of Frodo's face.
FAIR: When Frodo saves Sam from drowning, they clasp each other in the "acrobat-grip", they both clasp the other one's wrist, a very tight grip. However, when Sam's hand is pulled above water, his arm has turned 180 degrees. It is, however, possible for a drowning, thrashing man to loose his grip and get turned around, even when getting rescued.
Continuity: When we enter the chamber of Balin's tomb, there is a shaft of daylight through the far wall. Soon afterward, we leave the chamber and a similar shaft illuminates the stone above the chamber door; this light must come from roughly the opposite direction.
Revealing mistakes: Aluminium foil can be seen inside the chimney passing under the camera as Gandalf rides into Hobbiton, just before the kids ask for fireworks. The foil is probably used for containing dry ice or such, to make a smoke effect in the chimney.
Continuity: During the scene where Sam chases Frodo as the latter leaves the Fellowship, the former begins to sink in the river Anduin when Frodo hauls him out of the water. In the next scene, Sam's clothes are completely dry.
Continuity: When Arwen is riding her horse to get Frodo to Rivendell, Frodo is seen with green pus on his face by his mouth and eyes. In the next clip of Frodo, the puss is gone with no signs of it being there before.
Revealing mistakes: Following the fight with the troll in Moria, there is a shot of Aragorn crawling across the floor towards Frodo. He brushes against some "rocky" debris, which wobbles in a very polystyrene way.
SYNC: When Bilbo asks if it's okay if he eats something and Gandalf goes "No, not at all." his mouth isn't moving in time with his words.
Continuity: When Frodo runs up to the edge of the grassy knoll to tell Gandalf he's late, it's obvious he's a good few feet away from the wagon once it's stopped. After Gandalf is done talking and it goes to the shot where Frodo leaps into his arms, the wagon is standing right next to the grassy knoll, much closer than it was in the previous shot.
PLOT: When Orcs attack the fellowship in the Chamber of Mazarbul (where Balin's tomb is), Frodo's sword glows blue, but Gandalf's does not. Gandalf carries Glamdring, the Foe-Hammer, which was forged by Turgon the elf and therefore should glow as Sting does.
Continuity: In the scene at Isengard in which Orcs are tearing down trees, we see it start to rain as the camera focuses on Gandalf on the top of the tower, but in the scenes with Orcs and Saruman, the weather alternates between rain and no rain.
Continuity: When Arwen first approaches Frodo after he's been stabbed by the Witch-King, all of her hair is down. In the next scene when she leans over Frodo, her hair is clearly half up half down with just a few strands of hair coming down before her ears.
Revealing mistakes: When Arwen is riding her horse with Frodo trying to escape the Ringwraiths, in one close shot of Liv Tyler you can clearly see the dummy that was replacing Frodo.
Revealing mistakes: In the scene where Aragorn is leading the Hobbits towards Rivendell, they're walking through a swamp. At one point, Pippin trips and falls face down, and the seam of one of his fake feet comes loose.
Continuity: After getting off the boats, there is a scene with Gimli talking with Aragorn. Inbetween shots, behind Gimli, Sam switches from sleeping to awake, then back to sleeping. Later, he opens his eyes when Frodo is revealed to be missing.
Continuity: The length of the hilt section of the Shards Of Narsil seen in Rivendell is shorter than the section used by Isildur to slice the Ring from Sauron's hand.
Continuity: In the scene where Gandalf is visiting Frodo's home, he leaves without his hat, as it is still on Frodo's coat hanger. In the next scene, Gandalf has his hat.
DATE: When Isildur puts on the ring, turns invisible and runs into the water to escape battle, he loses the ring. He's no longer invisible so the enemy is able to kill him. The above water shot of his body reveals the modern tread on the bottom of his shoes.
Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: At the end of the movie, when Aragorn decides that he, Legolas and Gimli will go to save Merry and Pippin, Legolas's arrows are first yellow, then green, then yellow again. Even more strikingly, in this scene, "Gimli" clearly appears in a forbiddingly close mid-shot as Scale Double actor Brett Beattie, then shifts to the more correct John Rhys-Davies. At a head or more shorter than Aragorn and Legolas, Beattie could barely pass as size-appropriate to be filmed with Legolas and Aragorn in crowded scenes, wide shots, back-to-camera, etc., but his face should never have been so clearly exposed, so close to the other actors.
Revealing mistakes: When Saruman is telling Gandalf to join Sauron you can see that part of Christopher Lee 's beard, right side of his face just under his mustache, has become unstuck.
Continuity: When Gandalf and Frodo are discussing the ring at the table in Bag End, Frodo is holding the kettle and pouring water while Gandalf is speaking. When Gandalf finishes his sentence the camera angle changes to a closeup of Frodo who is holding a cup with both hands.
Crew: In the scene in which Merry asks where Aragorn is taking them after leaving Bree, and he replies "Into the wild," Viggo Mortensen accidentally bumps the tip of his bow into the camera.
FAIR: When the Black Rider comes into shot while the hobbits are hiding under the tree-roots, he appears on the left-hand side of the tree without first being visible on the right-hand side. This is probably deliberate, to shock and disorient the audience.
GEOG: During the introduction, King Elendil is smashed against a rocky hill, the same place where the one ring is cut from Sauron's hand. The overhead shot that follows, shows no such hill.
DATE: In Hobbiton, Gandalf's cart pulls away from the Hobbit children who are begging for fireworks. When the camera angle is looking back at the children from the viewpoint of the cart, there are treaded tire tracks in the dirt of the road.
DATE: As Legolas, Aragon, and one of the hobbits enter the woods of Lothlorien, you can make out tire treads in the grass starting at the lower right hand side of the screen.
GEOG: When Aragorn and Legolas are talking, after the Fellowship has stopped before the Falls of Rauros on the River Anduin, the river can be seen flowing from right to left in the back ground. They are on the West bank of a river flowing from North to South and dropping over a large waterfall: the water should flow from left to right.
CHAR: Gandalf asks Frodo if he can see anything on The Ring after he removes it from the fire. Frodo says "Nothing. There's nothing". The camera switches over to Gandalf then Frodo says "Wait!" The camera goes back to The Ring in Frodo's hands. It is plain in appearance and then letters start to appear on it. Why did Frodo say "wait" if nothing had happened yet?
Revealing mistakes: In several scenes where the Fellowship faces orcs, Frodo's sword, Sting, does not glow blue.
Revealing mistakes: A cord of some kind is visible behind the boat after Sam is pulled into it by Frodo at the end of the film.
FAIR: Farmer Maggot has a field of maize (American corn). Although J.R.R. Tolkien's working concept of Middle Earth was located in prehistoric Europe, the published novel, and (more importantly for us) the movies, are set in a generic fantasy-based time and place.
Revealing mistakes: When Aragorn is trying to get Frodo and the others to Rivendell after being attacked by the Ring Wraiths He tells Sam to look for a plant to help stop the poison in Frodo's wound. Upon finding the plant he is looking for Aragorn pulls a small knife to cut away what he needs, which on closer inspection can clearly be recognized as a common switchblade.

Quotes

  Aragorn: Are you frightened?
Frodo: Yes.
Aragorn: Not nearly frightened enough. I know what hunts you.
Frodo: What do you want?
Aragorn: A little more caution from you, that is no trinket you
carry.
Frodo: I carry nothing.
Aragorn: Indeed. I can avoid being seen if I wish, but to disappear
entirely, that is a rare gift.
Boromir: [holding the ring after Frodo has lost it] It is a strange
fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a
thing. Such a little thing.
Sam: I made a promise, Mr Frodo. A promise. "Don't you leave him
Samwise Gamgee." And I don't mean to. I don't mean to.
Aragorn: If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have
my sword...
Legolas: ...and you have my bow...
Gimli: ...and my axe.
Boromir: You carry the fate of us all, little one. If this is indeed
the will of the Council, then Gondor will see it done.
Elrond: Nine companions. So be it. You shall be the fellowship of the
ring.
Pippin: Great! Where are we going?
Gandalf: They are one; the ring and the Dark Lord. Frodo, he must
never find it.
Frodo: [gets up to hide the ring] All right. We'll put it away. We'll
keep it hidden, we'll never speak of it again. No one knows it's
here, do they? [Gandalf doesn't answer]
Frodo: Do they, Gandalf?
Elrond: His strength returns.
Gandalf: That wound will never fully heal. He will carry it the rest
of his life.
Elrond: And yet, to have come so far, still bearing the Ring, the
hobbit has shown extraordinary resilience to its evil.
Gandalf: It is a burden he should never have had to bear. We can ask
no more of Frodo.
Elrond: Gandalf, the enemy is moving. Sauron's forces are massing in
the east, his eye is fixed on Rivendell. And Saruman, you tell me,
has betrayed us. Our list of allies grows thin.
Gandalf: His treachery runs deeper than you know. By foul craft,
Saruman has crossed Orcs with goblin men. He's breeding an army in
the caverns of Isengard. An army that can move in sunlight and
cover great distance at speed. Saruman is coming for the Ring.
Elrond: This evil cannot be concealed by the power of the Elves. We
do not have the strength to withstand both Mordor and Isengard.
Gandalf, the Ring cannot stay here. This evil belongs to all of
Middle-Earth. They must decide now how to end it. The time of the
Elves is over, my people are leaving these shores. Who will you
look to when we've gone? The Dwarves? They toil away in caverns,
seeking riches. They care nothing for the troubles of others.
Gandalf: It is in Men that we must place our hope.
Elrond: Men? Men are weak. The Blood of Numenor is all but spent, its
pride and dignity forgotten. It is because of Men the Ring
survives. I was there, Gandalf. I was there three thousand years
ago. I was there the day the strength of Men failed.
Elrond: [scene switches to a flashback of Elrond and Isildur]
Isildur, hurry, follow me.
Elrond: [voiceover] I led Isildur deep into the fires of Mount Doom,
where the Ring was forged, the one place it could be destroyed.
Elrond: Cast it into the fire! Destroy it!
Isildur: No. [walks away]
Elrond: Isildur! [cuts back to present]
Elrond: Isildur kept the Ring. It should have ended that day, but
evil was allowed to endure. There's no strength left in the world
of Men. They're scattered, divided, leaderless.
Gandalf: There is one who could unite them. One who could reclaim the
throne of Gondor.
Elrond: He turned from that path a long time ago. He has chosen
exile.
[Frodo hears the ring whispering ominously while the Council argues]
Frodo: I will take it! [they don't hear him; he raises his voice] I
will take it! [they fall silent, looking at him] I will take the
Ring to Mordor! [pause] Though... I do not know the way.
[Frodo wanders in the woods. Boromir comes up behind him, gathering
wood]
Boromir: None of us should wander alone, you least of all. Frodo? I
know you suffer, I see it day by day. Are you sure you do not
suffer needlessly? There are other ways Frodo, other paths we might
take.
Frodo: I know what you would say, and it would seem like wisdom, but
for the warning in my heart.
Boromir: Warning? Against what? We are all afraid Frodo. But to let
that fear drive us to destroy what hope we have... don't you see?
That is madness!
Frodo: There is no other way.
Boromir: I ask only for the strength to defend my people!
[approaches Frodo]
Boromir: If you would but lend me the Ring...
Frodo: [backs away] No!
Boromir: Why do you recoil? I am no thief.
Frodo: You are not yourself.
Boromir: What chance do you think you have? They will find you. They
will take the Ring. And you will beg for death before the end!
Elrond: Strangers from distant lands, friends of old you have been
summoned here to answer the threat of Mordor. Middle Earth stands
upon the brink of destruction, none can escape it. You will unite
or you will fall. Each race is bound to this fate, this one doom.
Bring forth the ring, Frodo.
[Frodo puts the ring on a stand for all to see]
Boromir: So it is true. In a dream, I saw the Eastern sky grow dark.
But in the West, a pale light lingered. A voice was crying, "The
doom is near at hand, Isildur's Bane is found." [Reaches for the
Ring] Isildur's Bane...
Aragorn: Boromir!
Gandalf: [speaking the words engraved on the Ring] Ash Nazg
Durbatuluk, Ash Nazg Gimbatul, Ash Nazg Thrakatuluk, Agh
Burzum-ishi Krimpatul. [the light darkens and the air rumbles;
Boromir backs away from the Ring]
Elrond: Never before has anyone dared utter words of that tongue
here, in Imladris.
Gandalf: I do not ask for pardon, master Elrond, for the Black Speech
of Mordor may yet be heard in every corner of the West! The Ring is
altogether evil.
Boromir: It is a gift. A gift to the foes of Mordor. Why not use this
ring? Long has my father, the Steward of Gondor, kept the forces of
Mordor at bay. By the blood of our people are your lands kept safe.
Give Gondor the weapon of the enemy. Let us use it against him.
Aragorn: You cannot wield it. None of us can. The One Ring answers to
Sauron alone. It has no other master.
Boromir: And what would a Ranger know of this matter?
Legolas: This is no mere ranger. He is Aragorn, son of Arathorn. You
owe him your allegiance.
Boromir: Aragorn? This is Isildur's heir?
Legolas: And heir to the throne of Gondor.
Aragorn: [Elvish] Sit down, Legolas.
Boromir: Gondor has no King. Gondor needs no King.
Gandalf: Aragorn is right. We cannot use it.
Elrond: You have only one choice. The ring must be destroyed.
Gimli: Then what are we waiting for? [He strikes the ring with his
axe; the axe breaks, leaving the ring intact]
Elrond: The ring cannot be destroyed, Gimli, son of Gloin, by any
craft that we here possess. The ring was made in the fires of Mount
Doom. Only there can it be unmade. The ring must be taken deep into
Mordor and cast back into the fiery chasm from whence it came. One
of you must do this.
Boromir: One does not simply walk into Mordor. It's black gates are
guarded by more than just orcs. There is evil there that does not
sleep. The great eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland,
riddled with fire, ash, and dust. The very air you breathe is a
poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this. It is
folly.
Legolas: Have you heard nothing Lord Elrond has said? The ring must
be destroyed!
Gimli: And I suppose you think you're the one to do it?
Boromir: And if we fail, what then? What happens when Sauron takes
back what is his?
Gimli: I will be dead before I see the Ring in the hands of an Elf!
Never trust an Elf!
[holding the Ring out to Frodo after dropping it in the fire]
Gandalf: Hold out your hand, Frodo. It's quite cool.
[Drops the Ring into Frodo's palm]
Gandalf: What do you see? Can you see anything?
Frodo: Nothing. There's nothing.
[Gandalf sighs in frustration]
Frodo: Wait... there are markings. It's some form of Elvish, I can't
read it.
Gandalf: There are few who can. The language is the that of Mordor,
which I will not utter here.
Frodo: Mordor?
Gandalf: In the common tongue it reads "One Ring to Rule Them All.
One Ring to Find Them. One Ring to Bring Them All and In The
Darkness Bind Them."
Galadriel: The one ring to rule them all.
Gandalf: There is one other who knew Bilbo had the Ring. I looked
everywhere for the creature Gollum, but the enemy found him first.
I don't know how long they tortured him, but through the endless
screams and inane babble, they discerned two words:
Gollum: SHIRE! BAGGINS!
Frodo: Shire? Baggins? But that would lead them here!
[Cuts to a Ringwraith cutting off a Hobbit's head]
Frodo: [holding out the Ring] Take it Gandalf! [Gandalf backs away]
Take it!
Gandalf: No, Frodo.
Frodo: You must take it!
Gandalf: You cannot offer me this ring!
Frodo: I'm giving it to you!
Gandalf: Don't... tempt me Frodo! I dare not take it. Not even to
keep it safe. Understand, Frodo. I would use this ring from a
desire to do good... But through me, it would wield a power too
great and terrible to imagine.
Galadriel: It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were
given to the Elves; immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings.
Seven, to the Dwarf Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the
mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of
Men, who above all else desire power. For within these rings was
bound the strength and the will to govern over each race. But they
were all of them deceived, for a new ring was made. In the land of
Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in
secret, a master ring, to control all others. And into this ring he
poured all his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all
life. One ring to rule them all. One by one, the free peoples of
Middle Earth fell to the power of the Ring. But there were some who
resisted. A last alliance of men and elves marched against the
armies of Mordor, and on the very slopes of Mount Doom, they fought
for the freedom of Middle-Earth. Victory was near, but the power of
the ring could not be undone. It was in this moment, when all hope
had faded, that Isildur, son of the king, took up his father's
sword. And Sauron, enemy of the free peoples of Middle-Earth, was
defeated. The Ring passed to Isildur, who had this one chance to
destroy evil forever, but the hearts of men are easily corrupted.
And the ring of power has a will of its own. It betrayed Isildur,
to his death. And some things that should not have been forgotten
were lost. History became legend. Legend became myth. And for two
and a half thousand years, the ring passed out of all knowledge.
Until, when chance came, the ring ensnared another bearer. The ring
came to the creature Gollum, who took it deep into the tunnels
under the Misty Mountains, and there it consumed him. The ring gave
to Gollum unnatural long life. For five hundred years it poisoned
his mind; and in the gloom of Gollum's cave, it waited. Darkness
crept back into the forests of the world. Rumor grew of a shadow in
the East, whispers of a nameless fear, and the Ring of Power
perceived. Its time had now come. It abandoned Gollum. But then
something happened that the Ring did not intend. It was picked up
by the most unlikely creature imaginable. A hobbit, Bilbo Baggins,
of the Shire. For the time will soon come when hobbits will shape
the fortunes of all...
Aragorn: I do not know what strength is in my blood, but I swear to
you I will not let the White City fall, nor our people fail.
Boromir: Our people, our people. I would have would have followed
you, my brother... my captain... my king.
Aragorn: Be at peace, Son of Gondor.
Galadriel: I know what it is you saw, for it is also in my mind.
[telepathically] It is what will come to pass, If you should fail.
The Fellowship is breaking, it has already begun. He will try to
take the Ring, you know of whom I speak. One by one, it will
destroy them.
Frodo: [telepathically] If you ask it of me, I will give you the One
Ring.
Galadriel: You offer it to me freely? I do not deny that my heart has
greatly desired this. [starts to grow dark] In the place of a Dark
Lord you would have a Queen! Not dark but beautiful and terrible as
the Morn! Treacherous as the Seas! Stronger than the foundations of
the Earth! All shall love me and despair! [she stops] I have passed
the test. I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain
Galadriel.
Frodo: I cannot do this alone.
Galadriel: You are a Ring-bearer, Frodo. To bear a Ring of Power is
to be alone. [pulls out her hand] This is Nenya, the Ring of
Adament. And I am it's keeper. This task was appointed to you, and
if you do not find a way, no one will.
Frodo: I know what I must do, it's just that... I'm afraid to do it.
Galadriel: Even the smallest person can change the course of the
future.
Aragorn: Boromir! Give the Ring to Frodo.
Bilbo: My dear Bagginses and Boffins, Tooks and Brandybucks, Grubbs,
Chubbs, Hornblowers, Bolgers, Bracegirdles and Proudfoots!
Everard Proudfoot: Proudfeet!
Galadriel: We shall not meet again, Elessar.
Gimli: Nobody tosses a dwarf.
Witch-King: Give up the Halfling, She-Elf!
Arwen: [draws her sword] If you want him, come and claim him!
Gandalf: Always remember Frodo, the Ring is trying to get back to its
master. It wants to be found.
Frodo: Go back, Sam. I'm going to Mordor alone.
Sam: Of course you are. And I'm coming with you.
Boromir: What is this new devilry?
Gandalf: A Balrog. A demon of the ancient world. This foe is beyond
any of you. Run!
Gandalf: Now, let's see... Ithildin. It mirrors only starlight and
moonlight. [doors are revealed] It reads: The doors of Durin, Lord
of Moria. Speak friend and enter.
Merry: What d'you suppose that means?
Gandalf: Oh, it's quite simple. If you are a friend, you speak the
password, and the doors will open.
Frodo: It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him when he had the chance.
Gandalf: Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live
deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them,
Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the
very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has
some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The
pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.
Pippin: What's that?
Merry: This, my friend, is a pint.
Pippin: It comes in pints? [In low voice] I'm getting one.
Aragorn: Gentlemen, we do not stop till nightfall.
Pippin: What about breakfast?
Aragorn: You've already had it.
Pippin: We've had one, yes. What about second breakfast?
[Aragorn turns and walks off in disgust]
Merry: I don't think he knows about second breakfast, Pip.
Pippin: What about elevenses? Luncheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner?
Supper? He knows about them, doesn't he?
Merry: I wouldn't count on it.
Bilbo: I'm old, Gandalf. I know I don't look it, but I'm beginning to
feel it in my heart. I feel... thin. Sort of stretched, like...
butter scraped over too much bread. I need a holiday. A very long
holiday. And I don't expect I shall return. In fact I mean not to.
Boromir: Frodo... Where is Frodo?
Aragorn: I let Frodo go.
Boromir: Then you did what I could not.
Frodo: You're late.
Gandalf: A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He
arrives precisely when he means to.
Gandalf: There is only one Lord of the Ring, only one who can bend it
to his will. And he does not share power.
[first lines]
Galadriel: The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in
the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for
none now live who remember it. It began with the forging of the
Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves, immortal, wisest and
fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarf lords, great miners and
craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted
to the race of men, who, above all else, desire power. But they
were, all of them, deceived, for another Ring was made. In the land
of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged
in secret a master Ring, to control all others. And into this Ring
he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all
life. One Ring to rule them all.
Saruman: Against the power of Mordor there can be no victory.
Bilbo: I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I
like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
Gandalf: Confound it all, Samwise Gamgee. Have you been
eavesdropping?
Sam: I ain't been droppin' no eaves sir, honest. I was just cutting
the grass under the window there, if you'll follow me.
Gandalf: A little late for trimming the verge, don't you think?
Sam: I heard raised voices.
Gandalf: What did you hear? Speak.
Sam: N-nothing important. That is, I heard a good deal about a ring,
and a Dark Lord, and something about the end of the world, but...
Please, Mr. Gandalf, sir, don't hurt me. Don't turn me into
anything... unnatural.
Pippin: Anyways, you need people of intelligence on this sort of...
mission... quest... thing.
Merry: Well, that rules you out, Pip.
Gandalf: Keep it secret. Keep it safe.
Gandalf: Is it secret? Is it safe?
Saruman: We must join with Him, Gandalf. We must join with Sauron. It
would be wise, my friend.
Gandalf: Tell me, "friend", when did Saruman the Wise abandon reason
for madness?
Gandalf: To the bridge of Khazad-dum.
voiceover: And some things that should not have been forgotten were
lost. History became legend; legend became myth.
Galadriel: It betrayed Isildur to his death. And some things that
should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend,
legend became myth, and for two and half thousand years the Ring
passed out of all knowledge. Until when chance came, it ensnared a
new bearer. The Ring came to the creature Gollum, who took it deep
into the tunnels of the Misty Mountains. And there, it consumed
him. The Ring brought to Gollum unnatural long life. For five
hundred years it poisoned his mind. And in the gloom of Gollum's
cave, it waited. Darkness crept back into the forest of the world.
Rumor grew of a shadow in the East, whispers of a nameless fear,
and the Ring of Power perceived. Its time had now come.
Gandalf: For sixty years, the Ring lay quiet in Bilbo's keeping,
prolonging his life, delaying old age. But no longer, Frodo. Evil
is stirring in Mordor. The Ring has awoken. It's heard its Master's
call.
Frodo: But he was destroyed. Sauron was destroyed.
Gandalf: No, Frodo. The spirit of Sauron endured. His life force is
bound to the Ring and the Ring survived. Sauron has returned. His
Orcs have multiplied. His fortress of Barad-Dur is rebuilt in the
land of Mordor. Sauron needs only this Ring to cover all the lands
with a second darkness. He is seeking it, seeking it, all his
thought is bent on it. The Ring yearns to go home, to return to the
hand of its Master. They are one, the Ring and the Dark Lord.
Frodo, he must never find it.
Boromir: This is no mine. It's a tomb.
Gandalf: [reading] They have taken the bridge and the second hall. We
have barred the gates but cannot hold them for long. The ground
shakes, drums... drums in the deep. We cannot get out. A shadow
lurks in the dark. We can not get out... they are coming.
Gandalf: I think you should leave the ring behind, Bilbo. Is that so
hard?
Bilbo: Well, no.
[frowning]
Bilbo: ...and yes. Now it comes to it, I don't feel like parting with
it. It's mine, I found it. It came to me!
Gandalf: There's no need to get angry.
Bilbo: Well, if I'm angry, it's your fault.
[to himself]
Bilbo: ...it's mine... my own... my precious...
Gandalf: Precious? It's been called that before, but not by you.
Bilbo: Oh, what business is it of yours what I do with my own things?
Gandalf: I think you've had that ring quite long enough.
Bilbo: You want it for yourself!
Gandalf: BILBO BAGGINS! Do not take me for some conjuror of cheap
tricks! I am not trying to rob you. I'm trying to help you.
Gimli: Not the beard!
Bilbo: Are all these children yours? Gracious, you have been
productive.
Frodo: We're friends of Gandalf the Grey, can you tell him we've
arrived?
Barliman Butterbur: Gandalf? Gandalf... Oh, yes, I remember! Elderly
chap, big gray beard, pointy hat. Not seen him for six months.
Legolas: Hurry! Frodo and Sam have reached the eastern shore.
[Aragorn does not move]
Legolas: You mean not to follow them.
Aragorn: Frodo's fate is no longer in our hands.
Gimli: Then it has all been in vain. The fellowship has failed.
Aragorn: Not if we hold true to each other.
[pause]
Aragorn: We will not abandon Merry and Pippin to torment and death.
Not while we have strength left. Leave all that can be spared
behind. We travel light. Let's hunt some Orc.
Gimli: YES!
Pippin: Are we lost?
Merry: No.
Pippin: I think we are.
Merry: Shh. Gandalf's thinkin'.
Pippin: Merry?
Merry: What?
Pippin: I'm hungry.
Galadriel: The Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a
little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains
while the Company is true.
Bilbo: I've thought of an ending for my book - "And he lived happily
ever after... to the end of his days."
[Frodo has been stabbed by a Morgul-blade]
Pippin: Is he going to die?
Aragorn: He is passing into the Shadow World. He'll soon become a
wraith like them.
Sam: This is it.
Frodo: This is what?
Sam: If I take one more step, it'll be the farthest away from home
I've ever been.
Frodo: Come on, Sam. Remember what Bilbo used to say: "It's a
dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the
road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you
might be swept off to."
Bilbo: [voice] It's a dangerous business, going out your door. You
step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no
telling where you might be swept off to.
Arwen: What's this? A Ranger, caught off his guard?
Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had
happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for
them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time
that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world
Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring.
In which case, you were also meant to have it. And that is an
encouraging thought.
Gandalf: Lead them on, Aragorn. The bridge is near. Do as I say!
Swords are no more use here!
Gandalf: [pointing to a tunnel] There!
Merry: He remembered!
Gandalf: No, but the air doesn't smell so foul here. If in doubt,
Meriadoc, always follow your nose.
Gimli: Soon Master Elf, you will enjoy the fabled hospitality of the
dwarves. Roaring fires, malt beer, ripe meat off the bone.
Sam: Trust a Brandybuck and a Took.
Merry: What? That was just a detour, a shortcut.
Sam: Shortcut to what?
Pippin: Mushrooms!
Hero Orc: The trees are strong, my lord. Their roots go deep.
Saruman: Rip them all down.
Gandalf: My dear Frodo. Hobbits really are amazing creatures. You can
learn all there is to know about their ways in a month, and yet
after a hundred years they can still surprise you.
Arwen: Why do you fear the past? You are Isildur's heir, not Isildur
himself. You are not bound to his fate.
Aragorn: The same blood flows in my veins. The same weakness.
Arwen: Your time will come. You will face the same evil, and you will
defeat it.
Arwen: Do you remember when we first met?
Aragorn: I thought I had wandered into a dream.
Arwen: Long years have passed. You did not have the cares you carry
now. Do you remember what I told you?
Aragorn: You said you'd bind yourself to me, forsaking the immortal
life of your people.
Arwen: And to that I hold. I would rather share one lifetime with you
than face all the ages of this world alone.
[hands him her pendant]
Arwen: I choose a mortal life.
Aragorn: You cannot give me this.
Arwen: It is mine to give to whom I will. Like my heart.
Gandalf: I think there's more to this hobbit than meets the eye.
Gimli: They say that a great sorceress lives in these woods. An Elf
witch of terrible power. All who look upon her fall under her
spell... and are never seen again.
Aragorn: Take some rest. These borders are well protected.
Boromir: I will find no rest here. I heard her voice inside my head.
She spoke of my father and the fall of Gondor. She said to me, even
now, there is hope left, but I cannot see it. It is long since we
had any hope. My father is a noble man, but his rule is failing,
and our people lose faith. He looks to me to make things right and
I would do it. I would see the glory of Gondor restored. Have you
ever seen it, Aragorn? The White Tower of Ecthelion, glimmering
like a spike of pearl and silver, its banners caught high in the
morning breeze. Have you ever been called home by the clear ringing
of silver trumpets?
Aragorn: I have seen the White City, long ago.
Boromir: One day, our paths will lead us there and the tower guard
will take up the call: The Lords of Gondor have returned.
Elrond: Men? Men are weak.
Gimli: Well, here's one dwarf she won't ensnare so easily. I have the
eyes of a hawk and the ears of a fox.
[elves appear, covering them with arrows at point-blank range]
Haldir: The dwarf breathes so loud, we could have shot him in the
dark.
[Merry and Pippin are leading the orcs away from Frodo]
Pippin: It's working!
Merry: I know it's working! Run!
Saruman: Your love of the halfings' leaf has clearly slowed your
mind.
Frodo: I know what you would say, and it would seem like wisdom, but
for the warning in my heart.
Gandalf: You cannot pass! I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder
of the Flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, Flame of
Udun! Go back to the shadow. You shall not pass!
Legolas: We should leave now.
Aragorn: No. Orcs patrol the eastern shore. We must wait for cover of
darkness.
Legolas: It is not the eastern shore that worries me. A shadow and a
threat have been growing in my mind. Something draws near, I can
feel it.
Galadriel: For the time would soon come when hobbits would shape the
fortunes of all.
Frodo: What news of the outside world? Tell me everything.
Gandalf: Everything? You are far too eager and curious for a hobbit.
Most unnatural.
Gandalf: Well, what can I tell you? Life in the wide world goes on
much as it has these past age, full of its own comings and goings,
scarcely aware of the existence of hobbits... for which I am very
thankful.
Frodo: Before you came along, we Bagginses were very well thought of.
Gandalf: Indeed?
Frodo: Never had any adventures or did anything unexpected.
Gandalf: If you're referring to the incident with the Dragon, I was
barely involved. All I did was give your uncle a little nudge out
of the door.
Frodo: Whatever you did, you've been officially labeled a disturber
of the peace.
Bilbo: No, thank you. We don't want any more visitors, well-wishers,
or distant relations.
Bilbo: You will keep an eye on Frodo, won't you?
Gandalf: Two eyes, as often as I can spare them.
Saruman: Concealed within his fortress, the lord of Mordor sees all.
His gaze pierces cloud, shadow, earth, and flesh. You know of what
I speak, Gandalf: a great Eye, lidless, wreathed in flame.
Saruman: I gave you the chance of aiding me willingly, but you have
elected the way of pain.
Frodo: Where are you taking us?
Aragorn: Into the wild.
Elrond: There's no strength left in the world of men.
[holding up a piece of the great sword Narsil]
Boromir: Still sharp.
Boromir: One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its black gates are
guarded by more than just orcs. There is evil there that does not
sleep, and the Great Eye is ever watchful. It is a barren
wasteland, riddled with fire and ash and dust, the very air you
breathe is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do
this. It is folly.
Sam: Hey. Mr. Frodo's not going anywhere without me.
Elrond: No, indeed. It is hardly possible to separate you, even when
he is summoned to a secret council and you are not.
[holding up a mail shirt]
Bilbo: Here's a pretty thing: Mithril. As light as a feather, and as
hard as dragon-scales.
Saruman: Moria... You fear to go into those mines. The dwarves delved
too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in the darkness
of Khazad-dum... shadow and flame.
Gandalf: Be on your guard. There are older and fouler things than
Orcs in the deep places of the world.
Sam: There's an eye-opener, and no mistake.
[as orcs break down the door]
Gimli: Let them come. There is one dwarf yet in Moria who still draws
breath.
[to the Uruk-hai]
Saruman: Do you know how the Orcs first came into being? They were
elves once, taken by the dark powers, tortured and mutilated. A
ruined and terrible form of life. Now... perfected. My fighting
Uruk-Hai. Whom do you serve?
Lurtz: Saruman.
Saruman: Hunt them down. Do not stop until they are found. You do not
know pain, you do not know fear. You will taste man-flesh.
Aragorn: I swore to protect you.
Frodo: Can you protect me from yourself? [holding out the Ring] Would
you destroy it?
Aragorn: [closing Frodo's hand around the Ring] I would have gone
with you to the end, into the very fires of Mordor.
Boromir: They have a cave troll.
[to Frodo]
Boromir: I ask only for the strength to defend my people.
Boromir: The world of men will fall, and all will come to darkness,
my city to ruin.
Aragorn: I do not know what strength is in my blood, but I swear to
you I will not let the White City fall, nor our people fail.
Bilbo: I am sorry I brought this upon you, my boy. I'm sorry that...
you must carry this burden. I'm sorry for everything.
Gollum: It came to me, my own, my love... my... preciousssss.
Frodo: I know what I must do. It's just... I'm afraid to do it.
Frodo: [listening to the shrieks of the Black Riders] What are they?
Aragorn: They were once men. Great kings of men. Then Sauron the
deceiver gave to them nine rings of power. Blinded by their greed,
they took them without question, one by one falling into darkness.
Now they are slaves to his will. They are the Nazgul, Ringwraiths,
neither living nor dead. At all times they feel the presence of the
Ring, drawn to the power of the One. They will never stop hunting
you.
[on the mountain]
Legolas: There is a fell voice on the air.
Gandalf: It's Saruman!
[avalanches start]
Aragorn: He's trying to bring down the mountain! Gandalf, we must
turn back!
Gandalf: No!
Gandalf: Frodo suspects something.
Bilbo: Of course he does, he's a Baggins, not some blockheaded
Bracegirdle from Hardbottle.
Legolas: A lament for Gandalf... [heard in the background]
Merry: What do they say about him?
Legolas: I have not the heart to tell you. For me the grief is still
too near.
Gandalf: But we still have time. Time enough to counter Sauron if we
act quickly.
Saruman: Time? What time do you think we have?
Pippin: Oh... That's nice. Ash on my tomatoes!
Merry: That black rider was looking for something. Or someone. Frodo?
Legolas: Something draws near. I can feel it.
Saruman: You did not seriously think that a hobbit could contend with
the will of Sauron, there are none that can.
Gimli: You are full of surprises, Master Baggins.
Legolas: We must move on. We cannot linger.
Sauron: You cannot hide. I see you. There is no life in the void.
Only death.
[last lines]
Frodo: Mordor... I hope the others find a safer road.
Sam: Strider'll look after them.
Frodo: I don't suppose we'll ever see them again.
Sam: We may yet, Mr. Frodo. We may.
Frodo: Sam... I'm glad you're with me.
Gandalf: [to Pippin] Fool of a Took. Throw yourself in next time, and
rid us of your stupidity.
Sam: They should do a bit about his fireworks. The finest rockets
ever seen burst in colors of blue and green then after that were
silver showers that came falling like a rain of flowers. Oh no that
doesn't to them any justice.
Gimli: If anyone was to ask for my opinion, which I note they're not,
I'd say we were taking the long way around.
Gandalf: Let the ring-bearer decide.
Frodo: We will go through the mines.
Gandalf: So be it.
Saruman: The hour is later than you think. Sauron's forces are
already moving. The Nine have left Minas Morgul.
Gandalf: The Nine?
Saruman: They crossed the River Isen on Midsummer's Eve, disguised as
riders in black.
Gandalf: They've reached the Shire?
Saruman: They will find the Ring, and kill the one who carries it.
Gandalf: Fly, you fools.
Gandalf: [speaking the words engraved on the Ring] Ash Nazg
Durbatuluk, Ash Nazg Gimbatul, Ash Nazg Thrakatuluk, Agh
Burzum-ishi Krimpatul. [the light darkens and the air rumbles]
Elrond: Never before has any one dared utter the words of that tongue
here in Imladris.
Gandalf: I do not ask for pardon, Master Elrond, for the Black Speech
of Mordor may yet be heard in every corner of the West.
Gandalf: I suppose you think that was terribly clever.
Saruman: The power of Isengard is at your command, Sauron, Lord of
the Earth.
[before his 111th birthday party]
Bilbo: Gandalf, my old friend, this will be a night to remember.
[Horn blowing in distance]
Legolas: The Horn of Gondor.
Aragorn: Boromir!
[after defeating the Ringwraiths at the Ford, Frodo collapses]
Arwen: Frodo? Frodo, no!
[Frodo begins to have a harder time breathing]
Arwen: Frodo, don't give in! Not now!
[She holds Frodo close to her body and begins to cry]
Arwen: [voiceover] What Grace is given me, let it pass to him. Let
him be spared. Save him.
Frodo: Mordor, Gandalf, is it left or right?
Gandalf: Left.
[about the passing Wood-elves]
Frodo: They're going to the harbor beyond the White Towers. To the
Grey Havens.
Sam: They're leaving Middle-earth.
Frodo: Never to return.
Sam: I don't know why - it makes me sad.
[Frodo awakens to hear Aragorn singing in the dark]
Frodo: Who is she? This woman you sing of?
Aragorn: 'Tis the Lay of Lúthien. The Elf-maiden who gave her love to
Beren, a mortal.
Frodo: What happened to her?
Aragorn: She died.
[He sighs, turns back to Frodo]
Aragorn: Get some sleep, Frodo.
Gimli: Dwarf doors are invisible when closed.
Gandalf: Yes, Gimli, their own masters cannot find them, if their
secrets are forgotten.
Legolas: Why doesn't that surprise me?
Gandalf: I once knew every spell in all the tongues of Elves...
Men... and Orcs.
Pippin: What are you going to do, then?
Gandalf: Knock your head against these doors, Peregrin Took! And if
that does not shatter them, and I am allowed a little peace from
foolish questions, I will try to find the opening words.
Aragorn: They will look for his coming from the White Tower. But he
will not return.
[after Frodo is stabbed by the Witch King]
Aragorn: Sam, do you know the Athelas plant?
Sam: Athelas?
Aragorn: Kingsfoil.
Sam: Kingsfoil, aye, it's a weed.
Aragorn: It may help to slow the poison. Hurry!
[after falling down a hill]
Merry: I think I've broken something.
[pulls out a broken carrot]
Frodo: I think we should get off the road [feels the Wraith's
presence] Get off the road! Quick!
Legolas: Lembas! [nibbles a corner] One small bite is enough to fill
the stomach of a grown man!
Merry: [to Pippin] How many did you eat?
Pippin: Four.
[burps]
Merry: [On Midgewater Marshes] What do they eat when they can't get
hobbit?
Galadriel: For you, Samwise Gamgee, Elven rope, made of Hithline.
Sam: Thank You M'Lady... Have you ran out of those nice shiny
daggers?
Aragorn: Ride hard, don't look back.
Sam: Watch who you're sweet talking.
Frodo: Don't worry Sam, Rosie knows an idiot when she sees one.
Sam: ...does she?
Frodo: We must leave the Shire. Sam and I must get to Bree.
Merry: Right... Buckleberry Ferry! Follow me!
Gimli: [upon leaving Lorien and Galadriel] I have been dealt a wound
beyond all healing, for I have looked the last... upon that which
was fairest.
[sighs]
Gimli: Henceforth I will call nothing fair unless it be her gift to
me.
Legolas: What was it?
Gimli: I asked for one hair from her golden head... she gave me
three.
Bilbo: [enigmatically] You're a good lad, Frodo. I'm very selfish,
you know. Yes, I am. Very selfish. I don't know why I took you in
after your mother and father died but it wasn't out of charity. I
think it was because... of all my numerous relations, you were the
one Baggins that showed real spirit.
Frodo: Bilbo, have you been at the Gaffer's home brew?
Bilbo: No.
[pause]
Bilbo: Well, yes, but that's not the point...
Galadriel: I give you the light of Eärendil, our most beloved star.
May it be a light for you in dark places, when all other lights go
out.
Frodo: Gandalf, I'm glad your back.
Gandalf: So am I dear boy. So am I.
Aragorn: [to Boromir] I will not lead the Ring within a hundred
leagues of your city.
