| Plot: | While on a recent deployment to Iraq, US Army Staff Sergeant Will Montgomery is injured when an improvised explosive device goes off within close proximity to him. He is back in the States recovering from the more serious of those injuries, including one to his eye and leg. He has resumed a sexual relationship with his long time girlfriend Kelly, despite the fact that she is now engaged to another man who Will knows. With the few months Will has left in his enlistment, the army assigns him to the Casualty Notification Team in his area. Not having a background in counseling, psychology or grief management, he is unsure if he is well suited to this job. He is partnered with a career soldier, Captain Tony Stone, who teaches Will the precise protocol involved in the job. Tony tells Will, who quickly learns by on the job experience, that this job has its own dangers. As Will learns to adapt to the range of emotions of the next of kin, he is unprepared for the reaction of Olivia Pitterson, whose husband was killed in Iraq. His initial encounter with Olivia leads to him wanting to get to know her better, which may not be in either her or his best interest. Despite being a recovering alcoholic, the more experienced Tony tries to guide Will as best he can under their collective circumstances. |

CHAR: Ben Foster isn't wearing a Combat Infantryman Badge when notifying Steve Buscemi but has it adorned at the next notification of Olivia Pitterson at the clothesline. There shouldn't be an exception to wear his dress greens without it. Also it is made clear that Foster served as a mechanic in Army, and never served as an infantryman. Combat Infantryman Badges are only awarded to infantrymen. Foster would have been awarded The Combat Action Badge. Continuity: When Will gets pulled over for running a red light, Capt. Stone's seat belt is on and off between takes. Fact errors: Montgomery wears an armor crest as his branch insignia and also wears a Combat Infantry Badge. Since his branch insignia crest represent that he is an armor crewman and not infantry, he should not be wearing a Combat Infantry Badge. Only the infantry can wear a Combat Infantry Badge after being awarded the badge while in combat. CHAR: Montgomery's dress uniform is lacking the blue infantry cord and the blue infantry discs under the BOS pins. While Montgomery was not currently attached to an infantry unit he was still awarded the MOS of Combat Infantryman, this entitles the soldier to wear the blue cord and discs on the dress uniform indefinitely. CHAR: Captain Stone claims to have served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, but does not have a "combat patch" on his right shoulder, or overseas service bars on his right sleeve. CHAR: Captain Stone refers to a protective mask as a "gas mask." Nobody in the Army does this. It's commonly referred to as a "Pro Mask," as it also protects against the inhalation of biological warfare agents and radioactive dust, not just gas. Fact errors: The soldiers at the post are all depicted as wearing camouflage Patrol Caps with their ACU fatigues. Unless they're actively performing field training, the black beret is the standard headgear in garrison, even with fatigues. CHAR: SSG Montgomery yells at a mechanic to "read the manual!" Soldiers never refer to it as a "manual." It's referred to as a "TM," for Technical Manual. |
