| Plot: | Al Percolo is a major league baseball scout sent to scout in Mexico as a punishment. However, he eventually stumbles across Steve Nebraska, a young American who can pitch AND hit better than anyone else can do either. He signs Steve and returns home in glory. It soon becomes obvious, though, that Steve is immature and possibly unstable, and Al turns to psychiatrist Doctor H. Aaron, whom he picks for her name, for help. |

Goofs
|
SYNC: During the tryouts, a wooden bat makes a sound like a metal bat. GEOG: Steve Nebraska is supposedly on the roof of Yankee Stadium, yet the Los Angeles skyline is visible behind him. Continuity: A shot of Steve Nebraska on the roof of Yankee Stadium is swapped left-for-right. Continuity: When Steve is talking to Al on the roof, he throws his glove to the ground. However, a couple of shots later he is holding it in his hand, even though he never picked it up. Continuity: Steve's green beer bottle keeps turning between cuts while he chats with the scout in the lounge. Continuity: Steve holds a pile of plates with one hand as he hurls them Frisbee-style out of Al's kitchen window with the other hand. In the next shot, he's holding just one plate. PLOT: A team always has a player undergo tests before it signs him, not after. Miscellaneous: A St. Louis Cardinals player is shown in the dugout wearing a hoop earring. Due to the risk of it getting caught or snagged, such jewelry is not allowed to be worn during a game. PLOT: A team always releases a new player's biographical information to the media. Miscellaneous: In the final game scene, Ozzie Smith is at the bat with two outs and two strikes, but the scoreboard reads 0 strikes, 0 outs and #18 at bat. Ozzie Smith is #1. Fact errors: Ozzie Smith is shown wearing a batting helmet with a protective ear flap. In real life, Ozzie Smith wore a flapless batting helmet. Fact errors: Al makes a promise that Steve will join the team and pitch the first game of the World Series if the Yankees make it that far. However, no player is allowed to play in the post-season if he is not on the 25-man roster as of August 31. FAIR: In the film, pitcher Brendan Fraser bats in game 1 of the World Series. In the World Series, if the American League team is home they are allowed to select a designated hitter. Although teams almost always use this option, they are not required to do so and may allow the pitcher to hit. PLOT: In a perfect game, the last out is the 9th and final batter in the order. For the majority of his career, Ozzie Smith either batted second or eight in the batting order, and was not known for batting ninth. If, according to Bob Costas, he had hit 5 home runs in the playoffs (ironic as he was known for having no power), most likely he'd be batting in his usual second spot, and not the eight spot. Either way, he did not bat last in the batting order, and wouldn't have been, especially in the world series. |
Quotes

Steve Nebraska: Al, you're like a dad to me. Al Percolo: But I'm not your dad. I'm just a guy taking 15 percent. Steve Nebraska: I thought it was 10. Tommy Lacy: God said people make mistakes. Al Percolo: God never said people make mistakes; where did you hear that shit? He said honor thy mother, and thy father, and thy Yankee contract! Steve Nebraska: I got you something. It's a chocolate baseball bat. Al Percolo: [takes the bat and examines the end, which is broken] Did you drop it? Steve Nebraska: I got a little hungry. Al Percolo: You don't have to yell, this is a different phone. Ron Wilson: It has nothing to do with the phone, I just like yelling at you. Steve Nebraska: I'm the Yankee, not you! |
