Plot: Fin McBride, a train aficionado, receives unwanted attention where ever he goes because he is a dwarf. As a result, he is a solitary and reserved man who is suspicious of people. When Henry Styles, Fin's closest friend and boss, dies, Fin moves to an abandoned train depot in Newfoundland, New Jersey, the depot bequeathed to him by Henry. There, Fin meets overly gregarious Joe Oramas, who is temporarily operating his father's hot dog/coffee truck that is parked outside of the train depot, and soon-to-be divorced Olivia Harris, a woman harboring some deep seated emotional issues. Seeing beyond his dwarfism, Joe and Olivia try to get to know Fin, but he would rather just be left alone. In Newfoundland, Fin also meets Emily, the local librarian who wants a new friend at a time of need, and Cleo, a young girl who is a fellow train aficionado like Fin and who initially thinks Fin is a child just like herself. Through all these interactions, Fin comes to the realization that he truly does crave meaningful human contact, but this realization may come too late at least with this new circle of acquaintances.

Goofs

Continuity: The level of beer in Fin's glass on his first trip to the bar.
Continuity: Olivia's knees when she's lounging on the couch during the "Have you ever been in love?" scene.
Continuity: Near the beginning of the film, Olivia's shirt has a small hole right in the middle of the front. The fabric is undamaged in subsequent scenes.
Continuity: When Fin and Joe spend the night at Olivia's, the towel she brings to Fin and places at the foot of the bed disappears in the next shot.
Continuity: When Joe is making lunch for Fin and Olivia, the meat has grill marks, even though it's being fried with onions in a pan.
Continuity: When Fin picks up the groceries for Olivia, he has his bag on his shoulder. The bag is not there when he delivers the groceries, but it returns after he has left Olivia's house.
Continuity: Following the scene where Olivia returns home from the hospital, there is a brief shot of Fin and Olivia watching the sunset from her dock. This shot is in fact taken from an earlier scene where Fin and Olivia had a conversation on the dock as they are wearing the same clothing.
CHAR: Fin identifies the train route from Los Angeles to San Francisco as the Starlight Express. In fact, it is the Coast Starlight; "Starlight Express" is the title of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
CHAR: When Finn is at the grocery checkout, the cashier's register display says that the lane is closed instead of displaying the price.
CHAR: Fin pulls out a library card from a book that Olivia had checked out in her name. In the old library card/check system the card should have been kept at the library to keep track of who had checked it. It should not have been placed back in the book and then released to check out.

Quotes

Finbar McBride: It's funny how people see me and treat me, since I'm
really just a simple, boring person.
Joe Oramas: Hey, Olivia, you got a garlic press?
Olivia Harris: No.
Joe Oramas: How can you not have a garlic press?
Olivia Harris: [both she and Fin are smiling, looking at him] Still
no!
Joe Oramas: Alright, you keep talking! I'm gonna go cook without the
garlic press!
[turns back to kitchen]
Olivia Harris: [to Fin] I'm not used to having people in my house...
especially loud people.
Finbar McBride: It's a nice house.
Olivia Harris: Yeah. David bought it as a get-away place... so I
moved down here and got away.
Finbar McBride: Where did you used to live?
Olivia Harris: Princeton.
[glancing at Fin]
Olivia Harris: I know... I didn't get very far. But I just couldn't
stay there another minute. Everyone looking at me... the poor woman
whose son died.
[a bit of silence falls between them]
Olivia Harris: How about you? What made you pick Newfoundland?
Finbar McBride: [smiling mystically] I wanted to live near Joe!
[Laughter spreads out gradually from them]
Joe Oramas: [leaning over the rail, shouting] Guys!
[Fin and Olivia burst into laughter]
Joe Oramas: Would you come up here and talk? Seriously, this sucks!
[the two keep laughing crazily]
Joe Oramas: Hey listen, if you guys do something later, can I join
you?
Finbar McBride: We're not gonna do something.
Joe Oramas: No, I know, but if you do, can I join you?
Finbar McBride: We're not gonna do something later.
Joe Oramas: Okay, but, if you do?
Finbar McBride: Okay.
Joe Oramas: Cool.
Finbar McBride: Well, there are people called train chasers. They
follow a train and they film it.
Olivia Harris: Are you a train chaser?
Finbar McBride: No.
Olivia Harris: How come?
Finbar McBride: I don't know how to drive a car. And I don't own a
camera.
Olivia Harris: That'd do it.
Finbar McBride: You said you weren't going to talk to me if I sat
here, Joe.
Joe Oramas: I haven't said anything in like twenty minutes.
[Fin checks his pocket watch]
Finbar McBride: Nine.
Joe Oramas: You timed me?
Finbar McBride: Mm-hmm.
Joe Oramas: That's cold, bro.
Finbar McBride: I'm retired, actually.
Emily: Aren't you a little young to be retired?
Finbar McBride: No, dwarves retire early. Common fact.
Emily: Yeah, *lazy* dwarves.
[last lines]
Joe Oramas: It's the librarian fantasy, man. Glasses off, hair down,
books flying.
Finbar McBride: She doesn't wear glasses.
Olivia Harris: Well, buy her some, it's worth it.
Joe Oramas: Trains are really cool.
Olivia Harris: They are.
Finbar McBride: [smoking marijuana] So are horses.
Joe Oramas: What?
Finbar McBride: I was just thinking that.
Joe Oramas: Give me the joint, man.
[first lines]
Henry Styles: Morning, professor.
Finbar McBride: Good morning.
Joe Oramas: Hey, man, let me ask you a personal question. You've had
sex before, right?
Finbar McBride: Yes.
Joe Oramas: With a regular sized chick?
Finbar McBride: With a regular sized chick.
Olivia Harris: Would you do me a favor and not look at me right now?
Joe Oramas: Do they have clubs for you people?
Finbar McBride: What?
Joe Oramas: You know, for train watchers.
