Goofs

Continuity: When in the plane, Bond's oxygen mask is clearly seen clipped to his helmet in frontal camera shots, but is missing on side profile camera shots.
Continuity: The scene where the tire re-inflates itself shows a wheel of the "classic" series for the BMW 7, yet the car was equipped with "sports" wheels.
Crew: "Back-seat driver" in Bond's car can be seen under black cloth when Bond test drives his car.
Fact errors: Helicopters are physically incapable of hovering in place with their rotors tilted forward, as indicated during the motorcycle chase. Also, we see the rotor hitting objects when in this position. Helicopter rotors are fragile. With those impacts, the rotors would fail, the helicopter would crash, pulling Bond and Wai Lin downward into a very colorful death.
Continuity: Wade is walking toward the camera with his hat in his right hand. The next shot shows him walking away from the camera with his hat in his left hand.
Continuity: The rear window of Bond's car repairs itself soon after the missile passes through the hole in it.
Continuity: Wai Lin's outfit becomes less revealing as she and Bond fall down the side of the skyscraper.
Continuity: The handcuff can be seen not closed around the water pipe.
Continuity: Amount of vodka in Bond's bottle during the hotel scene.
FAIR: The movie is set in 1997, yet Ho Chi Minh City is referred to as Saigon, a name not officially used since the Vietnam War ended in April 1975. However, people still call it that for tradition.
Continuity: The BMW that drives off the roof of the parking deck and crashes into the Avis dealer has a tinted moonroof, instead of the metal panel sunroof (with rocket launchers) seen on all previous shots of the car.
Continuity: When Bond parks his car in the garage, the tires are turned slightly to the right. Later, when Carver's people try to break it open, the tires are in straight position. Also, the car is at a different angle across the space.
GEOG: When HMS Devonshire gives its position as 114 23 818 E, 37 74 624 N, that longitude and latitude is actually 300 miles inland.
Fact errors: The fleet as seen is missing the Royal Navy's most powerful units, the aircraft carriers, of which at least one would almost certainly have been sent along with any naval buildup. Further, none of the ships present choose to deploy their helicopters for recon or assault on the stealth ship.
Continuity: When Bond parachutes into the ocean, in the air the tanks are quite spread apart, almost behind each shoulder, but as soon as he gets underwater, the tanks are right next to each other. His swimming flipper is knocked off his foot and floats away, yet is back in place in the next shot.
Continuity: Gupta tape-records Paris and Bond talking. Later on, he plays back a completely different recording of the same event.
Revealing mistakes: When Bond and Wai Lin are being chased by the helicopter, Wai Lin's fake left arm is much too long.
Continuity: When Bond and Wai Lin are being taken to Carver's building by helicopter, we get a shot of the building itself. It has a sloped roof, and a large pole on top, making it impossible for a helicopter to land on that roof.
Continuity: When Bond is talking to M and Moneypenny in the limo, the blue partition window can be seen being raised during an exterior shot but is then back down in the next shot.
SYNC: When the jump officer is prepping Bond for the H.A.L.O. jump, and we see him from behind, his mouth doesn't match what he is saying.
GEOG: When Bond and Wai Lin arrive in Saigon by helicopter, a Thai flag is even visible flying from a building. The streets use Chinese and Thai characters, not the Latin-based Vietnamese characters. The Saigon scenes were actually filmed in Bangkok.
Continuity: When Wai Lin runs away, having handcuffed Bond to the shower, her hair is completely dry, despite sharing the shower with Bond only a few seconds before.
SYNC: When Bond and Wai Lin are captured by Carver, Carver says, "I'll leave you to Stamper and his toys." The words "and his toys" were dubbed in, and Carver's mouth never moves along with them.
Revealing mistakes: When the helicopter is about ready to crash into the building at the end of the motorcycle chase, crash dummies can clearly be seen as the only helicopter passengers.
Continuity: During the motorcycle chase, the Range Rovers become dusty and dirty while hitting bags on the side of the road. In a subsequent shot when they stop at right angles, they are absolutely clean.
SYNC: On the stealth boat, Bond is using a silenced Walther P99 yet the sound of it is as if it is unsilenced.
PLOT: There's no reason why a hotel's parking garage door should be armored and be able to withstand missiles. (It's a holdover from an earlier version of the script, where the car battle took place in the villain's headquarters.)
Continuity: When Bond is searching Carver's lab for the GPS encoder, he is standing at a table with his hands by his sides. In the very next shot, a close-up on his face, he has his thumb on his chin as if in thought for a moment.
SYNC: When Carver is talking about launching his missile into Beijing, and his motive, he says, "Oh, nothing - just exclusive broadcasting rights in China for the next hundred years." When he says "hundred years" his mouth doesn't match his speech (obviously dubbed)
Fact errors: It would be physically impossible for the torpedo drill, launched in the first scene, to maintain sufficient forward momentum to overcome the lateral movement of the drill that would be caused by the friction of the cutting discs on the hull of the ship.
Continuity: During the motorcycle chase, Bond is supposed to be constantly holding Wai Lin's right hand with his left. Sometimes he is seen using both hands to drive the motorcycle.
Continuity: When the BMW jumps out of the car park, a wide shot shows the motion of the car. If the car had continued in that motion it would not of hit the ground floor but about the first or second. Also the angle in the wide shot is different to that of the head on shot.
CHAR: 120 is the maximum terminal velocity for skydivers only in the relatively thick lower atmosphere. 200 mph is indeed possible for a HALO jump. The world record is over the speed of sound. This was set by a skydiver who jumped from a balloon at 100,000 feet.
Crew: In the parking garage chase scene, when he shoots the red car with missiles it is thrown back on top of another car. The cable used to pull the car backwards from the explosion is visible at the bottom of the car while it is in the air.
Revealing mistakes: When Bond and Wai Lin crash through the window on the High Rise, you can see that the glass is shattered before they hit the window. Also, they each crash through through separate panes. Since they are wearing handcuffs they would have ended up wrapped around the vertical window frame.
FAIR: When Bond and Wai Lin have been captured, and they are flying towards the Carver building, Bond sarcastically says that Carver has an "Edifice complex", meaning he has an obsession with imposing buildings. This is a pun on "Oedipus complex", which involves a man being secretly in love with his mother. It's a gag.
Fact errors: When Bond hands the BMW to the valet in Hamburg, he tells him in German "Lass dich nicht verarschen", referring to the on-board computer's female voice. The subtitle reads "Don't let her push you around", which is inaccurate. The accurate translation would be "Don't let her take you for a ride".
Revealing mistakes: If the glass in the sound studio were sound-proof, it would be inches thick. Bond and Carver's henchman would not have gone crashing through it so easily.
Continuity: When Bond is fighting in the sound studio, he picks up a lampshade and uses it as a weapon. He strikes two of the henchmen with it, and never drops it, yet it has magically disappeared from his hands in the next scene.
Revealing mistakes: The interior set of the stealth boat is much larger than the actual stealth boat.
Revealing mistakes: Assuming it works the way that Q describes it, the method that Bond steers the car with the cell phone never quite seems to match up with the direction the car actually moves in. There are even a couple of scenes where it appears Bond is not even paying attention to the car or the cell phone, and it steers perfectly.
Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: Bond knocks one of Carver's henchmen into the printing press and the newspapers start printing with blood on them. However, you can see the man safely lands in some type of basket underneath the newspapers (you can see his legs sticking out), nowhere the actual mechanical part of the printing press.
SYNC: SPOILER: When Bond says "You forgot the first rule of mass media Elliot. Give the people what they want!" Bond's lips do not match what he is saying.
Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: The area where Wai Lin hangs underwater in the middle of the night is remarkably well lit.
Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: When Wai Lin and Bond are captured and brought to Carver, Carver types their obituary on a giant screen. However, he is only randomly hitting keys on his keyboard. The characters on the screen do not appear as quickly as he types, but that could be attributed to slow hardware (odd, however, for someone so powerful).
CHAR: At the end of the film when HMS Bedford is searching for Bond and Wai Lin, a voice is heard over a loudspeaker calling "This is the HMS Bedford...". A Royal Navy ship would be referred to as "HMS Bedford" or "the Bedford" or "Bedford", but never "the HMS Bedford".
Revealing mistakes: Just before the assailants shoot holes through the windshield of the BMW in the garage, the car is making a turn, but the steering wheel does not move at all.
Crew: When Bond tries to escape from the parking garage, you can see that the people in the car constantly cycle between no driver (presumably driven by remote control), one driver, and a driver and a passenger.
FAIR: When Carver's guards initially try to break into Bond's car, they can not even dent the vehicle; however, during the chase scene immediately after, the windows on the car shatter when the guards shoot at the vehicle. Apparently the car had a "straw to break the camel's back" point, and that was it. (Or: when Bond turned off the security system in order to enter the car, it lost this protection.)
FAIR: Bond has trouble operating a Chinese computer keyboard, although he has studied Oriental languages at Oxford (see You Only Live Twice (1967)). But even people who can read and write English, don't always know how to type in English, so it makes sense that Bond's language skills don't automatically extend to this particular ability. (Also it is not necessarily the same James Bond (just a code name like 007), and we shouldn't assume what he tells people is accurate - after all, he is a spy.)
FAIR: SPOILER: Wai Lin is submerged underwater for considerable time, and Bond "rescues" her by breathing air into her mouth. Bond would have exhaled ~some~ carbon dioxide, but the lungs don't process ALL the oxygen inhaled. This is why Artificial Respiration to save a drowning victim works.
Revealing mistakes: The BMW's registration plates are supposed to be German but they are the wrong size, shape and font. They don't resemble real German license plates.
Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: Wai Lin is tied to a chain and dropped into the water below Carver's stealth ship. The chain is shown to be attached to a rafter of the ship. When the boat is blown to smithereens, the chain remains taut as Bond works to free Wai Lin underwater.
PLOT: In the opening sequence, after firing the missile, the ship reports back that they have lost contact with the missile because it is out of range and thus it cannot be destroyed. Moments later, back at HQ, M & Co are seen watching the missile's on-board camera as it flies through the mountains towards its target. If the missile can relay images back to base, they could relay a message to the missile it to self-destruct!
SYNC: English subtitles on the majority of releases claim Wai Lin (speaking Cantonese) is saying, "Bring the boat. What are you waiting for?" when, in fact, she is saying, "Over here. Hey, come over here."
Revealing mistakes: In the opening sequence, Bond "hijacks" a military jet in an attempt to escape with the on-board nuclear bombs. As he taxis and the plane turns, the exhaust thrust overturns a truck, but doesn't even move any of the boxes or crates on the ground by it.
GEOG: In the scene where Bond test drives the BMW using the phone, set in Hamburg airport (but filmed in England) a Vauxhall Astra van with a UK numberplate is visible in the shot where the BMW spins around.
Continuity: In the scene where Bond escapes the military installation using a captured plane, he knocks out a pilot wielding a Beretta 92FS. However, in the next scene, the pistol is switched to a Browning BDA.
Continuity: When Dr Kaufman holds up the tape containing the news story announcing Paris Carver and Bond's death, we see that the tape is completely rewound. It was playing while Bond was in the room, and could not have been rewound so quickly before Kaufman removed it.
PLOT: There is no reason whatsoever for the sea drill to be mounted on a support rail that would let it go into the control room, as shown at the end of the film.
GEOG: When Bond drives off the roof of the Hotel Atlantic in Hamburg, he lands in a spot in Mönckebergstraße that is easily 500 meters down the road - an impossible distance for the car to fly.
PLOT: When Bond makes his H.A.L.O jump, we are told he is jumping from ten miles up, hence the need for oxygen. But the loading ramp is open, and nobody else is wearing oxygen masks.

Quotes

Elliot Carver: Good morning, my golden retrievers. What kind of havoc
shall the Carver Media Group create in the world today? News?
Newsman: Floods in Pakistan, riots in Paris, and a plane crash in
California.
Elliot Carver: Outstanding!
Elliot Carver: Mr. Wallace, call the President. Tell him if he
doesn't sign the bill lowering the cable rates, we will release the
video of him with the cheerleader in the Chicago motel room.
Mr. Wallace: Inspired, sir.
Elliot Carver: And after he signs the bill, release the tape anyway.
Mr. Wallace: Consider him slimed.
Elliot Carver: The distance between insanity and genius is measured
only by success.
Paris Carver: I used to look in the papers every day for your
obituary.
James Bond: Sorry to disappoint.
Admiral Roebuck: With all due respect, M, I think you don't have the
balls for this job.
M: Perhaps. But the advantage is, I don't have to think with them all
the time.
[Making love to his language tutor]
James Bond: I always enjoyed learning a new tongue.
Elliot Carver: Mr. Jones, are we ready to release our new software?
Jones: Yes, sir. As requested, it's full of bugs, which means people
will be forced to upgrade for years.
Elliot Carver: Outstanding.
James Bond: [Whilst being in bed with his Scandinavian language
tutor] I always enjoyed learning a new tongue.
Moneypenny: You always were a cunning linguist, James.
Moneypenny: [M walks up from behind Moneypenny] Don't ask.
M: Don't tell.
Q: It's the insurance damage waiver for your beautiful new car. Now,
will you need collision coverage?
James Bond: Yes.
Q: Fire?
James Bond: Probably.
Q: Property destruction?
James Bond: Definitely.
Q: Personal Injury?
James Bond: I hope not, but accidents do happen.
Q: They frequently do with you.
James Bond: Well, that takes care of the normal wear-and-tear. Is
there any other protection I need?
Q: Only from me 007, unless you bring that car back in pristine
order.
[Paris slaps James Bond]
James Bond: Was it something I said?
Paris Carver: How about the words, "I'll be right back"?
[to Carver before he is kiled by the sea-vac]
James Bond: You forgot the first rule of mass media, Elliot! GIVE THE
PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT!
James Bond: Filthy Habit!
[the phone in Bond's car ring]
James Bond: Yes?
Elliot Carver: Good Morning, Mr. Bond. Elliot Carver. I beleive you
have two things that belong to me!
James Bond: What are you talking about?
Elliot Carver: The encoder, in the dash of your car...
[pause]
Elliot Carver: ...And my wife, in your hotel room!
[Carver is revealing his plan to Wai Lin]
Elliot Carver: And this missile will be launched towards Beijing,
where General Chang has already called an emergency meeting of the
Chinese High Command. Unfortunately, the general will be stuck in
traffic and the missile will already hit the compound. However, the
general will be too late to stop the Chinese Air Force form sinking
the Royal fleet. He will then negotiate a truce, and emerge as a
world leader with the Nobel Peace Prize!
Wai Lin: And what do you get in return?
Elliot Carver: Oh, me? Nothing. Just exclusive broadcasting rights in
China for the next hundred years.
Elliot Carver: Mr. Bond, Ms. Lin. Welcome to Saigon. Please come in.
James Bond: It's always a pleasure to see you, Elliot.
Elliot Carver: I wasn't planning on opening this center until
tomorrow. But you're just in time to help me finish writing the
inaugural story, YOUR obituaries.
James Bond: It won't look like a suicide if you shoot me from over
there.
Dr. Kaufman: I am a professor of forensic medicine. Believe me, Mr.
Bond, I could shoot you from Stuttgart und still create ze proper
effect.
Jack Wade: You know that, officially, Uncle Sam is completely neutral
in this turkey shoot.
James Bond: And unofficially?
Jack Wade: We have no interest in seeing World War III - unless we
start it.
James Bond: Another Carver building. If I didn't know better, I'd say
he developed an edifice complex.
James Bond: You were pretty good with that hook.
Wai-Lin: Thanks. It comes from growing up in a rough neighborhood.
You were pretty good on the bike.
James Bond: Thank you. It comes from not growing up at all.
[last lines]
Wai-Lin: They're looking for us, James.
James Bond: Let's stay under cover.
Paris Carver: This job of yours... it's murder on relationships.
[Bond and Wai-Lin are handcuffed together]
Wai-Lin: If I didn't know better, I'd say you were following me
around, Mr. Bond.
James Bond: You have to admit, though: we seem to have developed a
certain attachment to each other.
Wai-Lin: Hopefully not for long.
Mr. Stamper: I owe you an unpleasant death, Mr. Bond.
Paris Carver: Tell me, James: do you still sleep with a gun under
your pillow?
Dr. Kaufman: This is very embarrassing. It seems there is a red box
they need in your car, only they can't get it open. They want me to
get you to tell how to open it. I feel like an idiot, I don't know
what to say. [Bond just smiles] I am to torture you if you don't do
it.
James Bond: Do you have a doctorate in that as well?
Dr. Kaufman: No, no this is more like a hobby... but I am very
gifted.
James Bond: Oh, I believe you.
Gupta: I call it "Gupta's Law of Convenient Anomalies" - if it looks
too good to be true, it probably is.
James Bond: [after throwing a bad guy into a printing press] They'll
print anything these days.
Elliot Carver: According to Eastern philosophy, the body has seven
different chakra points. The Energy centers, like the heart, or
genitals. The purpose of these implements is to probe those organs,
inflicting the maximum amount of pain whilst keeping the victim
alive for as long as possible.
Mr. Stamper: Dr. Kaufman's record was fifty-two hours. I'm hoping to
break it.
James Bond: I would have thought watching your TV shows was torture
enough.
[Carver has just informed his department heads of the sinking of the
Devonshire]
Elliot Carver: Ladies and Gentlemen, hold the presses! We have the
perfect story in which to launch our satellite news network
tonight. It seems a small crisis is brewing in the South China Sea!
I want books, I want magazines, I want newspapers, I want us on the
air 24 hours a day, this is our moment! And millions of people
around the world are going to hear about, read about it, and learn
about it from the Carver Media Group!
[pause]
Elliot Carver: There's no news, like bad news!
Elliot Carver: Soon I'll have reached out to and influenced more
people than anybody in the history of this planet, save God
himself. And the best he ever managed was the Sermon on the Mount.
Elliot Carver: Don't you realise how absurd your position is?
James Bond: No more absurd than starting a war for ratings.
James Bond: Are you sure you can do this on your own?
Wai-Lin: It depends whether your mission is peace or revenge.
James Bond: This is about stopping a war.
Admiral Roebuck: [to Russian General] Can't you people keep anything
locked up?
[Bond's transmission has shown a known terrorist holding a missing
American GPS encoding device]
M: I wonder with what'll the CIA be more upset - that they lost it,
or that we found it?
Q: Here's your cell phone. Talk here, listen here.
James Bond: So that's what I've been doing wrong for all these years?
James Bond: I think we understand each other.
Q: Grow up, 007.
[referring to the headline "The Empire WILL strike back"]
Elliot Carver: I rather like the last one. It isn't even mine.
Wai Lin: [bobbing in the South China Sea in scuba gear] Still
interested in hostile takeovers?
James Bond: It's the opportunities for travel, that I like best about
banking.
Wai Lin: [straddling Bond on a motorcycle] Don't get any ideas, Mr
Bond.
James Bond: I wouldn't dream of it.
Wai-Lin: It's mostly dull routine, of course, but every now and then
you get to sail on a beautiful evening like this. And sometimes
work with a decadent agent of a corrupt Western power.
James Bond: And they say communists don't know how to have fun.
Elliot Carver: [referring to Bond and Wai Lin] Mr Stamper, would you
please kill those bastards!
[the Royal Navy has launched a cruise missile at a terrorist site
Bond is surveying - Robinson gets on communications line with Bond]
Charles Robinson: White knight, 4 minutes to impact. Get out of
there. [pause] Yes, dammit, I know what it is, it's on the screen
in front of me. It's a jeep in front of a plane! Now get the hell
OUT of there!
Admiral Roebuck: What the hell is going on?
Charles Robinson: [to Bond] You will NOT wait! That is an order!
Admiral Roebuck: What is your man waiting for?
Charles Robinson: White Knight? [Robinson reacts with horror to
something on the screen] Oh my God, those are Soviet SB-5 nuclear
torpedoes! If the cruise hits them...
M: Order them to abort the missile!
Admiral Roebuck: [picks up phone] HMS Chester, urgent, Abort missile!
Abort missile!
Adm. Kelly - HMS Bedford: Now, Captain? Whatever the hell that thing
is, sink it.
Dr. Kaufman: My art is in great demand, Mr. Bond. I go all over the
world. I am especially good at the celebrity overdose.
[first lines]
Charles Robinson: Our man's in position on the center camera. It's
like a terrorist supermarket. Chinese Long March Scud, Panther
AS-565 attack helicopter, a pair of Russian mortars, and the crates
look like American rifles. Chilean mines. German explosives. Fun
for the whole family.
Elliot Carver: Mr. Gupta, is the missile ready to launch?
Gupta: Press the magic button, Beijing disappears!
Elliot Carver: Well, it seems you've outlived your contract!
[Carver shoots Gupta, instantly killing him]
Elliot Carver: You see, Mr. Bond, I have a backup plan!
James Bond: U-huh... So do I!
James Bond: Hello Elliot, interesting plan!
Elliot Carver: So much for German Efficiency!
James Bond: [after Bond hears the female voice in the car] I think
we've met.
Elliot Carver: When I was sixteen, I went to work for a newspaper in
Hong Kong. It was a rag, but the editor taught me one important
lesson. The key to a great story is not who, or what, or when, but
why.
Tamara Steel: Mr. Carver here is the banker Mr. [pause]
James Bond: Bond, James Bond.
Mr. Stamper: Drop the knife Mr. Bond or I drop your friend.
James Bond: [on the motorcycle] Get on the back!
Wai Lin: Why? Are you trying to protect me?
James Bond: No, I need to balance the bike. Now get on the back!
M: I believe you once had a relationship with Carver's wife, Paris.
James Bond: That was a long time ago, M... before she was married. I
didn't realize it was public knowledge.
Moneypenny: Queen and country, James.
M: Your job is to find out whether Carver or someone in his
organization sent that ship off course, and why. Use your
relationship with Mrs. Carver, if necessary.
James Bond: I doubt if she'll remember me.
M: Remind her. Then pump her for information.
Moneypenny: You'll just have to decide how much pumping is needed,
James.
James Bond: If only that were true of you and I, Moneypenny.
James Bond: Why did you marry him?
Paris Carver: He told me he loved me.
James Bond: That always sounds good.
Dr. Kaufman: [aims his gun at Bond] But now, Mr. Bond, I am afraid
that our little... [burst of static from his earpiece] Ah, Stamper!
Stop yelling in my ear, ja?
Mr. Stamper: Sir, they can't get into the car.
Dr. Kaufman: Oh, you can't be serious. Did you call the Auto Club?
Mr. Stamper: Do *you* want to call them? Make him tell you how to
open it.
Dr. Kaufman: O-O-Okay. Ja, I ask.
[finding Paris's body in his hotel room, Bond suddenly realizes the
news report in the background is reporting his death along with
hers]
Dr. Kaufman: [click] I have a clear shot at your head, Mr. Bond.
Stand up, slowly, drop your gun, and kick it towards me, ja?
[Bond does so]
Dr. Kaufman: Good. Now sit down on the bed next to Mrs. Carver.
[Bond does so, and Kaufman turns off the TV and extracts a videotape
from the VCR]
Dr. Kaufman: The story will be on the news in an hour.
James Bond: "Tomorrow's News Today."
Dr. Kaufman: Just so.
Captain - HMS Bedford: PWO, Is that target too small for missile
lock?
Principal Warfare Officer - HMS Bedford: Yes, sir.
Captain - HMS Bedford: [sits to calculate a manual firing solution]
Ok, we'll have to do this the old fashioned way.
Voice in Car: [during car chase] Warning! Unsafe driving will void
warranty!
