Fact errors: The sun can't rise out of the Pacific ocean when viewed from Continental America. Continuity: The jacket, paintbrush, and palette held by Michael Beck when visited by Kira. Crew: Camera crew reflected in the big mirror on the ballroom dance scene. Continuity: While pouring champagne at the end of a week of building Xanadu, Danny pours into Sonny's glass then goes to pour into his, when the camera switches mid sentence, Danny is filling Sonny's glass again. Continuity: Sonny is left-handed, as we see when he is painting, yet on a close-up shot where he is drawing, it's a right hand holding the mechanical pencil. Continuity: The sign on the doors of the old auditorium changes briefly between shots. Continuity: When Sonny first visits the painter's workshop, Richie is working on a painting, which is only partly done. When Richie turns to greet Sonny, the painting is almost competed. Continuity: In the final dance sequence in the Xanadu Club, the second muse to appear in "I'm Alive" has wavy hair just above her shoulders. In the last shot, her hair is straight and almost down to her waist. SYNC: When Sonny discovers Kira skating on the floor of the Xanadu building, he calls "You!" from the balcony above. Kira's repartee is "Me," which she says as her face is set towards the ground. Immediately after, she looks up at Sonny and can be seen silently mouthing the same line. Continuity: When Sonny borrows the moped to follow Kira, the weather is warm and the sky is clear. A few moments later on the pier, the weather has become misty and the sky overcast. Continuity: When Sonny first sees the auditorium that eventually becomes Xanadu, the letters on the roof of the building that spell out auditorium are missing the A and R. Later when Kira takes him to the auditorium, the T is now missing. The following scene when Sonny and Danny arrive at the auditorium, the T is back. Finally, when Sonny and Kira are slow dancing in front of the auditorium before it magically transforms into the finished Xanadu exterior, the T is missing again. Continuity: Richie's large painting stands in front of the stairs as Sonny enters. When Sonny leaves, the painting is now beside the stairs. Continuity: Several times in the art studio scenes, Sonny's paint pallet is replaced with few paintbrushes and vice versa. Continuity: At the start of "Don't Walk Away" the rose blooms with nothing around it. In the next shot leaves and stems are right beside it. Continuity: In the scene at the art studio when Kira sneaks up on Sonny painting, the color of his painting smock changes back and forth between medium and light blue. SYNC: The rock drummer is out of sync with the drum sounds during the rock and roll big band scene. Continuity: When Sonny talks to Kira in her dimension, Kira alternates from standing on or off the glowing yellow lines. Continuity: When Sonny enters Airflo records, he goes over to hang his coat up. He then begins to push an easel across the room, which was not beside the coat rack in the previous shot. Continuity: In "Whenever You're Away From Me" Kira and Danny begin to dance in front of a large wall mirror, yet in the next shot it has completely vanished, and they are just dancing in front of a plain white wall. SYNC: The tap dancing sounds during "Whenever You're Away From Me" are out of sync with their visual tapping. SYNC: The keyboard player in the "Dancin'" segment. Continuity: In the beginning we see Sonny sketching a large pastel drawing. He then rips it up into pieces and throws it out the window. As we watch the pieces float, they are all blank and white, with no drawing on them. Continuity: The ripped pieces of paper from Sonny's drawing land in front of the mural, yet they have all vanished as the muses dance in "I'm Alive." Continuity: The position of the roller skates hanging around Sonny's shoulders changes when he first enters the auditorium. SYNC: When Danny and Sonny come to the auditorium, there is a flashback scene where three female singers take the stage in the 1940's sequence. They are all mouthing the words but it is Oliva Newton John doing the singing throughout. The dark haired one also forgets to move her lips occasionally. Continuity: At the end of "I'm Alive" when Kira bumps into Sonny, the branches behind Sonny go from still, to blowing in the wind, instantly. PLOT: How was Danny able to catch up to Sonny at the pier, if he was on foot and Sonny was on a moped? And also, how did Danny know where he was going? SYNC: When Sonny arrives at work, as the Security Guards open the gates for him, we hear them chatting, but their mouths aren't open/are out of sync. Continuity: In "The Fall" musical sequence, Sonny is shown roller skating alone along a beach-side boardwalk. In the opening shot heat waves shimmer up from the ground, and passersby are dressed in bathing suits and other warm weather clothing. Further inserts of Sonny skating show the sky being gray and the people in the background are dressed in heavy winter coats. Continuity: At no time during the scene where Sonny falls into the water, is pulled out, and has coffee with Danny in the diner do we see Sonny carrying or wearing roller skates. Yet he goes from the diner to hitch a ride on a van, and he's wearing roller skates. Where did they come from? Miscellaneous: In the scene where Danny and Sonny meet, note the clothing that everyone's wearing. Everyone around them is dressed in warm weather clothing, like bikinis and short shorts, yet Danny and Sonny are both wearing long-sleeved coats, cold-weather pants, and - in Danny's case - a wool scarf and a hat. Continuity: At the beginning of the movie, the muses in the painting on the mural are detailed and fully rendered. Later, when Sonny is about to jump into the mural, the muses in the painting are sketchy and lacking detail. Continuity: In "The Fall", When Danny is skating in Venice Beach, his red fish shirt is buttoned. In the next shot, his shirt is unbuttoned. Crew: Near the end of "Dancin'", when the two 80's dancers meet the two 40's dancers, there is a white scrim behind them. If you look at the bottom of it, you can see several pairs of white sneakers and blue jean-clad legs behind it (the stagehands that move the 80's and 40's set together). Crew: In "Whenever You're Away From Me", Kira and Danny dance by a mirror, where you can see the cameraman. Crew: In the art studio Richie is working on a painting and it only has a small part finished. In the next shot the painting is completely finished. Continuity: The second muse to appear in "I'm Alive" has wavy hair just above her shoulders. In the final dance sequence of "Xanadu" in the Xanadu Club as they transform back to muses, in the last shot, her hair is straight and almost down to her waist. |

Kira: Have you ever heard the expression "kissed by a muse"? Well, that's what I am. I'm a muse. Sonny: Well, I'm glad someone's having a good time. Kira: Oh, don't make jokes; I'm serious. Sonny: I've come to take you out of here. Kira: It can't be done. No one's ever taken anyone out of here. Not in the whole history of... the whole history! Sonny: I'll make them let you go. Zeus! Zeus, you hear me? Kira: Oh, God. Sonny: I want to know more about you. Kira: You already know enough about me. Any more and you're going to get a headache. Sonny: Are you living with someone? Kira: Yes. I told you I live with my sisters. Sonny: I know. In an apartment on the second floor. All right, then. What's your last name? Kira: Same as my mother's and father's. Sonny: And what's that? Kira: Which one, my mother's or my father's? Sonny: Either! Kira: The same as mine! Sonny: I get it. No questions. Kira: No questions, no lies. Sonny: No questions, no truth, either. Sonny: Aw, what the hell. Guys like me shouldn't dream anyway. Kira: Look up "muse" in the dictionary. Go on, page seven twenty-eight. Read it! Sonny: Okay, all right. I'll read it. [reading] "Muse; any one of the nine sister..." Kira: Like the album cover? Mm-hmm? Sonny: [reading] "Any one of the nine sister goddesses in Greek mythology, presiding over song, and poetry, and the arts and do you believe me now, Sonny?" How'd you do that? What's going on? Kira: [Points at the TV] The television! [the television comes on and is showing a movie in black and white with two characters, Nick and Vargas, having a conversation when Nick pulls a gun] Nick: What should I do, Sonny? Dive at him, um, or make a martini? Vargas: Who you talking to? Nick: Sonny Malone. He doesn't believe Kira's a muse. Sonny: How can you be talking to me? You're a movie! Vargas: I ain't got time for this, Malone. Brenda's the only one that saw me at the racetrack. Now if the lady says she's a muse, she's a muse. [Brenda Trent enters, played by Kira, who is still also outside of the television screen] Vargas: Who's that? Brenda! Sonny: Kira! Brenda Trent: Sonny. [Sonny slumps into a chair] Nick: I think he needs a drink. Kira: It's okay; I'll take care of it. Thanks! Nick: Good luck on the opening of your joint, kid. [Puts his hands up] Wish I could be there. [the television goes off] Kira: In Xanadu, did Kubla Khan a stately pleasure dome decree... Danny McGuire: "Where Alph, the sacred river, ran through caverns measureless to man, down to a sunless sea." Yes, Xanadu. Kira: I'm Kira. Danny McGuire: Yes, Kira. But... Kira: But? Danny McGuire: Don't I know you? Kira: I don't think so. Danny McGuire: Are you sure? Because... Kira: Because? Danny McGuire: Never mind. Danny McGuire: Don't tell anyone, but I'm nervous. Kira: What about? Danny McGuire: I haven't had a club opening since... 1945. Wow. Kira: Then just pretend it's 1945 all over again. Danny McGuire: [looks fondly at Kira] I don't have to pretend. It *is* 1945 all over again. Danny McGuire: I've been known to twinkle a toe or two. Sonny: [Sonny hears a clarinet being played, and goes to investigate, finding Danny McGuire sitting on some rocks] Hey mister, what are you doing up there? Danny McGuire: Hope you don't mind a little noon-time music, kid. A little lunch time serenade. Sonny: Oh, I don't mind. It's kinda nice. But I was just wondering where they laid out the body. I mean, you got something a little more upbeat? Danny McGuire: Sure! [Plays a short, lively upbeat piece] Danny McGuire: Better? Sonny: [chuckles] Well, at least it's faster! Danny McGuire: [chuckles] Here, gimme a hand kid. Sonny: Sure. Danny McGuire: Boy oh boy, they sure don't make rocks like they used to! Sonny: Want some popcorn? Kira: A child and a fool in one/ So sure I could need no one/ My heart always on the run/ to nowhere/ Now as you're holding me/ My heart is reminding me/ That now I could never be/ without you/ But how can our love succeed/ A miracle is what we need/ And so I appeal to you/ To keep me suspended in time with you/ Don't let this moment die/ I get a feeling when I'm with you/ None of the rules apply/ But I know for certain/ Goodbye is a crime/ So love if you need me/ Suspend me in time/ Wasted the time away/ Holding our love at bay/ Now I can't last a day without you/ Your smile is a thrill to see/ Eyes hold me tenderly/ They'll shine in my memory forever/ But how can our love succeed/ A miracle is what we need/ And so I appeal to you/ To keep me suspended in time with you/ Don't let this moment die/ I get a feeling when I'm with you/ None of the rules apply/ But I know for certain/ Goodbye is a crime/ So love if you need me/ Suspend me in time/ In time... Sonny: Hey wait a minute... I don't even know your name... Kira: [Echoing] Kira... Danny McGuire: [after Sonny drives off of the edge of the pier] You're a real Errol Flynn, kid... what else do you do? Sonny: [about Kira] What do you mean she doesn't exist? I'm looking right at her, she's on the Nine Sisters album. Sonny: I'd say it will probably be done... when it's done... but that's just an approximate guess. Simpson: Five minutes, my office. If it's six, keep walking. Female Heavenly Voice: [after Kira's "Suspended in Time"] Maybe just one moment, darling. Male Heavenly Voice: Well, maybe just one moment. Or forever. I keep getting them mixed up, too. Sonny: Tuesday's Wednesday. Danny McGuire: Malone and McGuire, sounds like a Vaudeville act. Danny McGuire: Kid can you imagine it? Sonny: Imagine what? Danny McGuire: A bandstand. Right over there in that corner. And a big band, like in the 40's Sonny: Nah, nah, nah. Bandstands went out with running boards. Over there. A great rock 'n' roll band. This is the 80's! Danny McGuire: Real smooth dancers... wild trombone... the band decked out in tuxedos. Sonny: Six guys wearing electric orange... synthesizer... heavy precussion... electric guitar. Danny McGuire: Lots of glamour. Everybody dressed in elegance and style. Kira: A place where nobody dared to go / the love that we came to know / They call it Xanadu / And now, open your eyes and see / what we have made is real / We are in Xanadu / A million lights are dancing and there you are, a shooting star / An everlasting world and you're here with me, eternally / Xanadu / Xanadu / now we are here in Xanadu / Xanadu / Xanadu / now we are here in Xanadu / Xanadu, your neon lights will shine for you, Xanadu / The love, the echoes of long ago / you needed the world to know / They are in Xanadu / The dream that came through a million years / That lived on through all the tears, it came to Xanadu / A million lights are dancing and there you are, a shooting star / An everlasting world and you're here with me, eternally / Now that I'm here, now that you're near in Xanadu / Now that I'm here, now that you're near in Xanadu, Xanadu. Danny McGuire: You know, I used to be in the music business, but now I'm what you might call retired. It's a refined name for bum. Male Heavenly Voice: We don't use those old-fashioned names any more. Still, it's me you want to speak to. Sonny: I've come to get Kira. Male Heavenly Voice: She's not leaving - it's impossible! Male Heavenly Voice, Sonny: [together] That's what you think! Sonny: How did you know I was going to say that? Male Heavenly Voice: Put it this way - I'm a good guesser! |
