| Plot: | The banker Carl Allen is a lonely man with low self-esteem after his divorce with Stephanie, for whom he still yearns. He avoids his best friend Peter. He has a boring job, stalled in a bureaucratic position in the loan department of a bank; and he spends his spare time watching DVDs. When he meets by chance his former high school mate Nick, he is convinced to participate of a self-help program called "Yes Man" leaded by the guru Terrence Bundley. The basic principle of the program is to say "yes" to new situations, leaving the negativism aside. Carl misunderstands the concept and says "yes" to every question. While leaving the encounter, he helps a homeless man and in the end of the night he meets the gorgeous Allison that helps him with her scooter. His life completely changes with his new attitude. |

Goofs
|
Continuity: Carl and Allison take cover from the rain in a barn. Carl, who should be soaking wet, has only a few water stains on his shoulders. His hair and face are completely dry. Continuity: SPOILER: During the conversation in the last scene a long thread from his hospital gown appears and disappears. Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: When Carl is in the gown speaking to Allison you see his bare backside. Prior to this his character/stunt double is on a motorcycle speeding to her and you can clearly see that he is wearing shorts. Continuity: When Carl is avoiding Peter's phone-calls, Peter rings Carl's doorbell. When Cal gets up to get the door, his cell phone is clearly on the arm of the couch. When he gets to the door and begins talking to Peter, his phone is in his hand. Continuity: When Carl arrives at the gas station after running out of gas, the large sign with gas price information shows an unleaded price of over $5, but closer inspection of the gas pump screen shows the unleaded price to be under $3.50. Continuity: SPOILER: When Carl hops on the Ducati in his hospital gown to go see Allison, there is a scene where the back of his gown is open and we can see his butt. But in the next scene, which is shot from farther away, his gown is completely closed in the back. Continuity: During the Harry Potter party Carl's lightning scar changes position. Continuity: As Carl and Allison enter Norman's party, Allison is wearing high heels but, after when they climb over the fence to get into the arena she is wearing a different pair of shoes. SYNC: In the scene where Carl is singing and playing guitar to the jumper out of the apartment window, the singing is out of sync with his mouth during one verse. Continuity: During Terrence's motivational speech there is a crease on the bottom left part of his jacket that keeps disappearing and reappearing. Continuity: When Alison and Carl are talking on the bench, Alison's hair changes with the change of the camera angle, and then it changes again within the same camera angle. Continuity: SPOILER: In the scene after Carl is hit by the car and is in hospital, Rooney's burrito changes sizes. Continuity: The photo of Allison and Carl taken on the running motorbike is different from the one she shows after the ride. FAIR: In the scene when Carl is taking the Korean class, a North Korean (Democratic People's Republic of Korea-DPRK) flag can be seen on the teacher's desk. It is more likely that the instructor is using it to teach background on Korean history than it is the instructor is an agent of the North Korean government. Continuity: The first time Carl walks out his door, there is no nameplate there. The next time he is at his door, the name "Allen" is there. This occurs several times throughout the movie. Continuity: At the beginning of the film Carl's TV is a Sharp Aquos. Later on it is a Panasonic. Continuity: After he saves the man from the ledge, the camera shows crowd cheering and a fireman is standing by Lucy, but in the close up, it's another guy. Revealing mistakes: In the scene where Carl is singing and playing guitar to the jumper out of the apartment window, the adjacent window can be seen to have a thick curtain from the outside where it appears to be much thinner from the view inside the apartment. Also, this same adjacent window can be clearly seen from the inside of the room although at times it is blocked off with a solid wall. Continuity: The position of Allison's arm change after she and Carl take a break to drink water after their morning jog. Her arm with the water bottle can be seen hanging off the rail but then quickly changes position after cutting to a different scene. Miscellaneous: The end credits claim to list the cast in order of appearance, however Zooey Deschanel is listed second despite appearing later than other actors listed below her. CHAR: When Carl is singing the song "Jumper" to the man on the ledge, he sings it incorrectly. He sings "And if you never want to see me again, I would understand." The actual lyric is "And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand." Continuity: During the Harry Potter party, the position of Allison's hand on her glass changes. SYNC: Ducati Hypermotard cycles have 1100cc L2 cylinder engine configurations, yet we hear inline-4 cylinder "supersports" as the sound effect. CHAR: A video store section labeled "Family" contains R or NC rated horror films such as The Thing (1982) and Saw (2004). Revealing mistakes: When Carl is filling up the gas container, the read out on the gas pump shows that he filled more than 5 gallons when in reality he does not have a 5 gallon container. CHAR: When they are riding on the scooter, both the first time with the gas can and the second time he is driving, they go through several red lights. This is why car horns are blaring throughout the scene. SYNC: When the handheld-keyboard player in the band Munchausen by Proxy plays the passage from "The Star-Spangled Banner," the audio plays it in C major, but her fingers on the keyboard play all white keys with the melodic line resolving on an A, following a pattern that would in reality modulate the melody to A minor. Continuity: Before Lucy's bridal shower, Carl is checking his messages and listens to one from Rooney explaining he got into a car accident and his car's front bumper is missing. Later after Carl is leaving Stephanie's apartment, his car has it's front bumper. Fact errors: In the scene where they travel to Nebraska and attend a football game and their friends see them on TV, the bottom of the screen reads "Nebraska vs. Oklahoma". It should read the other way around; as they were in Lincoln at a home game; the home team appears second. SYNC: The scooter featured in the film is a modern Aprilia Mojito with a 4-stroke engine and a twist-and-go continuously-variable transmission (no shifting), yet the audio is of a 2-stroke engine with a manual transmission. Continuity: When Carl is in the hospital and realizes how to reconcile with Allison, he asks the time, and is told "5:40 AM." However, we can clearly see strong daylight illuminating the closed blinds of his hospital room. Then, when he runs outside of the hospital, it is midday. When he arrives at Griffith Observatory, the lighting changes back and forth from midday to early morning. |

Allison: Are you stalking me? Carl Allen: No, I would never do that. Carl Allen: Oh, by the way, the new furniture looks great from the yard. Allison: The world's a playground. You know that when you are a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it. Allison: Have you met my friend Ian? He's a computer hacker. He helped me erase your MySpace page, and your band's MySpace page, and your FaceBook page. Happy networking asshole! Carl Allen: The era of "yes" has begun. Carl Allen: Was I chewing gum before? Tweed: Can you explain why you were at the airport buying a ticket with no luggage? Carl Allen: You know it was a spur of the moment trip. Tweed: Yeah I was just explaining to my partner here how much I've always wanted to see Lincoln, Nebraska. Carl Allen: What I have to share is huge... and I want to share it with you. Carl Allen: Hey Carl... you wanna give your money away to some homeless guy? Yes, yes I do. How bout letting him use up the phone battery so that you cant get help when your car runs out of gas? You know what? That sounds like a fuckin' great idea! Carl Allen: [drunk] Hey... I'm just saying 'yes' to life... cuz... you gotta say 'yes' to life... I'm in a secret covenant... that sounded naughty! Carl Allen: You ever had a Red Bull? Ive never had a Red Bull before, but I had a Red Bull last night - I really like Red Bull. [shakes his glow-in-the-dark hoop]... got this new... glow in the dark thing... cant really see it right now, unless you go like this... [holds part of the hoop to his eyes and covers it with his hands] Carl Allen: Steph...! I can't... I'm so sorry. Stephanie: What are you saying? Carl Allen: ...I'm saying "no." Multack: We knew another Carl that we weren't fond of, now did we, Tweed...? Tweed: ...his name was "Marx." Carl Allen: I can't believe I tripped like that. Carl Allen: Yes! [last lines] Terrence Bundley: YES! Say it a million times. Then say it a million more. And the word you will have said two million times is... [looks around and sees everyone at the seminar is naked] Oh my God. Yes People: [while covering themselves up as best they can] YES! Carl Allen: [incredibly drunk, after losing a bar brawl, said very sadly] She's never gonna go to a ball. Allison: [singing with her band] Don't call me past 11 PM, it won't happen again. You can call me at 10:59 but don't call me at 11 because that's my rule now. Allison: [singing with her band] Don't call me past 11pm, it won't happen again. Happened once, it happened twice, it happened three times, maybe four times, maybe five times, maybe, maybe it happened six times, but it won't happen seven times. [first lines] Carl Allen: [refusing incoming cell phone call] No. Carl Allen: [refusing another incoming call] No means no. Norman: We! Are! Sparta! Norman: You called me Norm! Carl Allen: Yeah. Norman: Could that like be my nickname? Carl Allen: Yeah, I guess. Norman: Ah nice, I like your style, Car. That could be yours. Carl Allen: Yeah, Carl's pretty short already but... Nick: [listing things he's done since he started saying "yes"] I killed a cow with a bazooka... I'm not proud of that last one. Allison: [riding on a motor scooter] Am I going too fast for you? Carl Allen: Nah. In fact, I think you should go faster. That way if we crash, at least I'll die. I just don't wanna be kept alive artificially. Carl Allen: I am gone-o-reha. That didn't sound right. Carl Allen: [talking to himself, walking back to town] Why don't you take a late night stroll through the hills and get killed by the Manson family? Don't mind if I do! Carl Allen: [while watching Saw on DVD] Oh come on, you're halfway through, just snap it off already! Nick: Psh, fine! I wipe my ass with fine! Carl Allen: ...Wow. Um. Ok? Terrence Bundley: You can't audit life, my friend. Allison: [singing on stage] I shoulda been the one to break up with you. / He said who are you, who are you? / I wanna snap your neck and spit on you. / He said who are you, who are you? Wes: [after telling Carl he's been promoted for making money by giving out so many loans] Nice work, Carl. Now bump my fist. [Carl bumps fists with Wes] Norman: [Norman leans forward to join in and bump Wes' fist, but Wes sits back down, ignoring Norman] Ah, I missed it. I was going to fist you. Tour Guide: We've got a fainter down in head-removal. |
